General Info for my GLP friends, that need a job. | |
GeekOfTheWeek (OP) User ID: 11223926 United States 02/27/2012 05:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I really hope this helps some of you. Anything to do with oil, is booming, oil and gas wells. I was never brave enough to want to drill for gas. But I liked working on rigs, and I liked the money. Nowadays they have good insurance. Food for thought. I love physics. It bonds us eternally, it's what makes our computers work, it's what's in my morning cup of coffee, it's the thing that keeps the universe from vanishing due to lack of belief... |

There is tons of work in oil and gas... and we all know ppl want good paying jobs (be they tech, engineering or labor/trades)... but it seems NO ONE can pass the damn hair follicle drug tests! "Hey man, you think you can get me a job on a rig?" "Sure, can you pass the drug test?" "Oh, no man." "Can you shave your head and get off pot for the rest of your life? Because you be tested a lot." "What? No man, fuck that. Things are way outs hand man. Too many ppl in your business today... I need my privacy... blah, blah, blah..." "Well, have fun working cust. serv./telesales for 10 bucks an hour the rest of your life." Too many ppl who would qualify for general labor work offshore... but can't get a TWIC card due to small criminal offenses. Too many ppl going to college to learn about bullshit... too few getting even basic engineering/scientific educations. Do you have any idea the kind of money someone can make with a four year degree in most any form of science or engineering? How's that libtard arts degree treating you... still unemployed? |

Go to the web site and look. Actually OP, I completely agree with you. In my experience/observations there are more open positions than ppl willing to fill them. Rigzone, rigworker (I am on both email lists... great daily industry realated updates) and a few others have jobs aplenty for every field... and they can't fill the job openings to scrape paint off of a deck... much less for engineers. So to your point, yes, there are good jobs for the willing... it's finding those with the will which is tough. Some ppl , and most that come to me asking about entry level labor/skilled trade work, seem unwilling to do anything required to get into the field. It's either too intrusive, too tough, too much time away from home, etc... etc... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 5465453 United States 02/27/2012 06:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The oil fields right now are desperate for people. I'm not kidding. It's not as hard as most people think it is. Working derricks is... scary. LOL But the rest of the industry is just moving heavy crap. With trucks, boom lines, winches etc... I did it in the 80's in my 20's, it was fun. It's gotten a lot safer, faster, more money. Here in TX the Odessa and Midland areas, floors/newby, starts at 21.00 and hour. You work 84 hours a week, and get a week off. Some companies want both crews there on move the rig day. So that's an extra 24-36 hours every couple of weeks, generally 3 weeks, when it's move day/days. Quoting: GeekOfTheWeek My brother works for Patterson. He's the tool pusher, works on call at the rig for week on week off, He's the "rig manager". But takes other classes all the time, so more hours. South Dakota is booming. There are NO rv spaces in Midland and Odessa. But they are building. In the Dakotas, you can expect to pay 800.00 for an rv spot. They are that booming, and that desperate for hands. Do some research. Check out rigzone web site for job listings. I hope this encourages some of you young bucks, help the country and get paid good. :-) ^^5 Sending Karma for having such a kind heart! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 9746155 United States 02/27/2012 06:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes. And if you want really good money with much less heavy lifting, get a few basic welding certs or a CDL. Check out your local comm. college as I would wager they might have some classes... private skilled trade companies are all over as well. CDL's area a dime a dozen. CDL's with a TWIC card mean some serious money working distribution from a refinery. But in my field specifically... offshore and onshore chick welders/pipe fitters & cutters get respect (recall Flash Dance?)... chick roustabouts/floormen get shit on and are accused of not pulling their weight. Once you get your foot in the door (offshore especially) the tech training and opportunity for advancement is incredible, regardless as to what field you decide to get in. Heck, if you live around the GoM... take a baker/cook/steward position... it is a start and they too are always hiring! I know a guy who started as a steward with a service company (making beds and doing laundry), got a rigger job with the drilling company his service company was contracted to and went to school during his onshore time off to learn how to operate cranes... who is now (go figure) a crane operator making at least $70,000/year for TransOcean, the company who owns the rig his old service company drilled on. All that in less than three years! |

I had read that the Dakotas were booming with oil rig jobs. I just have no way to get out there. (sigh.....). I'm trying to get work where I am now, just so I can get my own place (living with friends now). Thanks again. Hopefully, maybe within the year, it is still booming. I have absolutly no problem doing hard work. It makes me sleep better at night :))) |

Motels are full and expensive. Most new guys sleep in their pickups for a few weeks till something breaks. Also, you probably wont get near a rig for 6 to 12 months and you'll need to get work (fast food, bartender, grocery...anywhere) so you can eat. The place is booming but it aint cheap. Strippers make thousands a night sometimes. I'm too old but if I was a bit younger it would be a fun life experience. Don't just pick up and go. Do some research cuz it's cold up there and you'll want to be able to sleep indoors and afford to eat. They need truckers big time. |
