Re: Smoking ban on private property?
They banned smoking here in Michigan too. I dont think it should be up to the state to decide. Take bars for example.. what do people do in bars? They smoke and drink. Dont like that? Find a non smoking bar! Cant find one? Thats because people like to smoke and drink!

We had some smoke cafes around here.. People would rent time on hookahs, or have a nice place to sit and smoke cigars. When the law was passed all these places shut down because it was illegal to smoke in public buildings. How fucked up is that?

Pretty soon laughing in bars will be illegal as well.

"To date, Lexington, Louisville, Morehead, Georgetown, Frankfort, Daviess County, Letcher County and Kentucky state government have adopted policies that prohibit smoking inside buildings, public facilities and, in some instances, on the outside campuses of facilities and public sidewalks."

I think the "public sidewalk" is where you get the $50 ticket from, although I'm unsure.

Sounds great! Spent most of my childhood sick from cigarette smoke, wish I never had to smell it again! Smoke all you want, but in YOUR HOUSE AND YOUR CAR. It smells like SHIT. I don't fart on YOU, don't smoke on ME!

This is more about the gov overstepping their bounds. But I find it weird that you spent your childhood sick from it and then tell smokers to only smoke in their house and cars which effects any children in the house.

That's respectable. Just realize some of us go outside so our kids don't have to suffer from our bad habit. There are plenty of ways we can make this a smoker friendly society (and keep non-smokers happy), some of which are in the thread, but the gov just decides to treat us as lepers.

Re: Smoking ban on private property?
You dont need to make the shit illegal. If you own a house and your neighbor doesnt like it the I say tough shit. Its not like an apartment where its can ruin your neighbors pad...
As for smoking in an apartment, they should have smoking and non smoking buildings, or sections in the buildings. If the landlord doesnt want smokers there then fine its his property. Also smoke damage should be covered in the deposit. Or even a non refundable portion like some places do for pets.
 Quoting: Marax

I like the non-smoking building idea. Personally I'm a smoker but I own my own home and smoke outside with no issues with the neighbors. Condo's etc are private properties owned by companies or people not the tenant. The person who is on the deed should be the only person that can decide if there is smoking allowed on their property. This includes restaurants and bars. I bet if we started banning alcohol in public places like say sporting events and concerts how large of a backlash would come then?
 Quoting: BoboTheHobo

There you go. A very good example of opening a can of worms. A person can smell alcohol on a person, especially beer. So if a person is offended by smoke, why not alcohol or perfume, etc. etc. This is what I mean by good intentions not being properly thought out. It just takes a court case to bring more and more infringing court decisions. Before you know it, they will have stadiums sectioned off, then outright bans.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11325182

we have huge problems in the us and around the world right now. the last thing we need to worry about is whether people smoke or not
 Quoting: libertarian23

I would bet the people bitchin about a little smoke and other asinine things are the type of people who are NOT paying attention to anything outside their bubble.

I sparked up a cig in busch gardens a few years ago and got mobbed by a bunch of angry soccer moms. I didnt think it was a big deal because I was outside and away from the main paths... but they flipped the fuck out... "my kids dont need to breath that" bla bla bla, but of course they all had pop, slushies, and candy loaded with HFCS but that was just fine chuckle
 Quoting: Marax

Did you tell them to get the frick out of your airspace if they were so concerned? Nothing annoys me more than trouble makers. You go and find an unoccupied outside area and they still have to bitch.

What I dont understand, since "they" all want us dead anyways why do they keep cracking down on smokers? I would have thought they would be pushing it on kids saying it has anti cancer effects or something...Quote Marax

I don't want anyone to start smoking if they don't smoke - it is expensive and it can cause health problems and it is hard to have a drink without a smoke.

Here is the conspiracy:

It is not a coincidence that the pharmaceutical giants pay antismoking activists all over the world to instigate hysteria and mass hatred against smokers. The goal of this marketing campaign, which involves even well-known names of international medicine, is quite clear: the smoker, frightened by the disinformation, tormented even by his kids (who get brainwashed in school), thrown out from public places and workplaces – and finally hated by society – tries to quit to conform. But, since he is told he is an “addict”, he must turn to the help of his doctor, who either sends him to a quit-smoking centre or prescribes the “therapy” directly, depending on the business arrangements made with Big Pharma.
