He was sick during the World Cup in 2010, but he didn't die.

Does your mother remember any of this? It sounds highly unlikely you'd know who he was, unless in this alternate time line he gained international fame before his prison release and that changed as well.

But part of the problem is that people are often very certain of themselves. In your case, you were a child. You would have been a little boy when he got out of prison and won the nobel peace prize. Are you sure your conversation about Mandela was about his death, or was about him winning a the prize?

I remember his death. Cancer I think. I remember the funeral.I tell people this and some think I'm nuts. Some also remember him dying. I don't know if we are remembering another time line or if we actually lived it. But it did happen.

I was watching/listening to the "Back to the Future" DVD commentary when they first came out several years ago, and I specifically remember them talking about actor George DiCenzo (who played Elaine's father) passing away and being missed, a great actor, etc.

Then, last year sometime, I saw a news story about how he had just died. I freaked right the fuck out.

With DiCenzo, as with many other celebrity deaths, I often remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard about it.

With Mandela, I could have sworn there was some story or news article I read about him dying (pretty recently), but now he's alive. Fah-reeeeky!!!!

Anyone remember Corey Feldman dieing of a drug overdose in his 20's? i was born in 83 and remember watching him in goonies and stand by me when i was younger and recall hearing of his death of a drug overdose must have been in the 90's when i was 11 or 12ish. I dunno shrugs anyone?

O M F G, i have just literally searched on google maps looking at new zealand,i have been following this thread but just now after a heavy night i google mapped new zealand and O M F G before i googled i knew in my mind and heart where new zealand was ie: to the left bottom of australia (in layman terms). and wtf its now bottom right.Have they changed the map or something.WTF

I can ask my mother about it sometime. I know that as I remember it, she definitely knew who he was.

Obviously none of this can be proven, but I personally feel quite certain about the memory. I wasn't prone to flights of fancy as a child and I ALWAYS had an unusual interest in history and politics.

I understand why and how you're challenging what I'm saying, but again, I have a very specific memory of all of this happening.

If there is such a thing as a timeline shift, than I imagine it would have been possible that there would be other differences besides his early death. Perhaps that could explain why so many people seem to remember this happening and remember knowing who he was during the 80's, etc.

Obviously the timeline shift doesn't seem likely or credible, but for those of us who have these very particular memories of media coverage of these events, it certainly gives one pause.

Nelson Mandela is also alive on my timeline, but got sick a few years back and dropped off the scene for awhile.

When he dies, there will be a big to-do about it and I don't recall seeing or hearing about any big to-do's regarding him yet.
