but we dont need to fire nukes at it cant we fire hydrogen bombs instead? with no nucular fall out

best scenario is to use jet thrusters and gradually move the object past impact zone...only problem is seeing it coming in time to get a crew prepped, ship up..and in place far enough out to do the job...

Peace

It is 460ft wide and soaring through space - on a possible collision course with Earth.

Nasa has identified a new asteroid threat to our planet and calculated that it could potentially impact on February 5th 2040.

The 2011 AG5 has already attracted the concern of the UN Action Team on near-Earth objects, which has begun discussing ways to divert it.

interesting, but i would be more worried about Apophis..
 Quoting: nerdrage88sasr

Why is that? While it may be almost 3 times the size as the one that OP listed, I'm not concerned about either.
 Quoting: DaNose

Apophis is 'only' 300m wide, but it had a near-miss in 2004, (dropped from front page headlines due to Tsunami), however, it will pass ..roughly..36000 kms from earth (from memory)..

It will come past us in 2029, when we will find out if it will hit us 7 years later, as it will be pulled into a gravity well and certain impact 7 years later..

estimates of 10million deaths, blah blah...

April 13 2036..to me, this is the most likely impact from what i can see...if we get that far..
Peace

Right. What I meant was I just don't see either being an Armageddon type scenario. I'm sure many will die as a result and many more injured or homeless, but end of the world nah.

World wide economy would collapse depending on where it strikes. NYC? London? Look what happened when the planes hit WTC building...

Well that sucks...Feb 5th is my birthday...I'll be turning 56 that day, lol.

Not worried......that's how long from now? Who cares?

also, curious, if it were to hit Earth for sure and nothing could be done to prevent it, would we know if it will hit Russia, Europe, US or Africa, or would it be a gamble?
