I know how to tune and tweak a system! And all these running -faster tips are nothing but BS!

The Ram is maxed out with 512MB ram. (I tried more, but than it bsods, it's a bios bug.)

As is said, i keep my systems clean: XP idles at 130MB, Win7 at 250-300MB, no need for paging. System is Uniwill with Sis630/730

Unluckily, ReactOS is not yet usable, though i already can play music with it on this machine ;-)
 Quoting: Alahndro

OP you don't know how to tune and tweak crap.
Why??? 1dunno1

Your PIII 1.2 Ghz laptop is ANCIENT.
Why you even attempted to load Win 7 on it is mind boggling.
...especially with 512 MB RAM.
512 MB ram is not even enough for XP to run as fast as it can.
You need AT LEAST 1 MB for XP to run freely.

You seriously don't know WTF you are talking about. grnrolleyes

I have no idea what could be going on but I would be interested in the current draw of both OS's at the AC cord with battery removed (so charging isnt a power factor)

do you have a kill-o-watt meter?

and what are the problems with reactOS you have on it?

you may find the forum at reboot.pro much more helpful in this area.

Windows 7 system requirements
If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

I know you don't want to hear it, but your system isn't made to run 7. Stick with XP until you can get a laptop made in this decade.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1281623

LOL, those requirements are never right. Windows XP for example works fine with 8MHz and 20 MB Ram.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11552830

Doesn't matter if you think they're right or not, they're what MS put out.

If your com runs 7 with specs lower than that, great. If it doesn't, there's not much reason to wonder why...

Combine OP's CPU that's barely above spec and only half of the "required" RAM and you've got a computer that will barely run 7. It's pretty easy to determine why it's running slow, and it's not because it has too much memory and CPU power...

I use this rig especially for performance tests, cause what runs faster here, will deifintely run faster on newer systems too.

I mean, it's a fucking single process that win7 won't let do its task. Has nothing to too with total ram usage or other shit, or what runs in background...

There's no reason to throw away a still functioning machine that is still quite fast for standard work, only because of it's age. If it one day won't run any more, i'll can smesh it with a hammer that is 50 Years old.

I'm using firefox, and it's perofming faster and snappier here than under win7 on a machine that's 5 times as fast, because of the speed-break called dwm...

It's a principal choice: no win7 on this one - then no win7 on any machine. I'm not keen on managing differents OS's

OEM WINDOWS SUX!

LOL

but Ive got XP down to 333mb with nlite and other tweeks..

also running XP on an old laptop w/256mb ram for data logging.

and ram booting a 1gb XP image that is fully functional.

I havnt spent much time with 7 yet as XP works so well and since they extended DRM in 7 to all software and that has been a big problem for some.

Single core P3 @1.2 Ghz. ???

That shit will not even run XP. 2.4Ghz single core is still shit for XP.

Heck....3.4Ghz on XP is almost tolerable, and still shit.

Dual core minimum approaching 5Ghz, with at least 3mbps sata HD, and 2 gigs of ram.

I bet your hard drive is nasty slow as well. That's the weakest link.

Hardware fail.

Fuck. I don't get it!!

I just made again a performance comparision between xp and win7, with video playback. Win7 needs at least 50% more power for the exact same task!

What i did, playback of the exact same file, with same codec and same setting on the same player:

CPU: Laptop P3 @1.2G
Player: mpc-hc
Codec: mpc's own
Codec: Xvid, SD 720x576, 16:9 anamorph
File: Railway docu, 2mbps

theres no way you can run Win7 properly on that.

Good plan. Since you can't run MS's most recent OS on relatively ancient hardware, you'll show Microsoft who's boss and not run 7 on anything.

Not keen on managing different OS's... give me a fucking break. You really aren't convincing anyone you're any kind of computer guy other than maybe being an end user.

Have fun with your principle choice there, sparky. I'm sure Bill Gates is losing plenty of sleep over not being able to support your decades old hardware with his OS.

I have faster machines too, but as i said i love this one as i modded it myself (not just upgrades like anyone else - i mean in depth circuitry changes!), and it is still fast enough for browsing, office, hearing music and watching videos.

Ubuntu is installed too, but can't handle the installed wifi-card.

Gaming - don't need it, only a waste of time!

One decade?! - I surely will maintain and repair it for another ten years!

First machine in my family was an old 286 my mom got free in ~ '92. Spent ages on Prince of Persia. ^^

Nothing wrong with old laptops and i was just joking you anyways. Your laptop is faster than any netbook, so all is fine. Hardmodding sounds interesting, what exactly did you do? OC? Maybe the RAM bug lies there? ^^

I have the latest bios on it that was available, and i'm not yet skilled in bios-hex-modding...

I might run it with 768 MB if i disable acpi, but that rules out win7 completely

Look at your memory usage and try to figure out if you are paging to disk. Win 7 uses a lot more memory and I suspect that's what's limiting you.

You'd be better served running a slimmed down linux kernel.

[link to www.techradar.com]

It's also possible to strip down the MS OSs and make their memory profile more reasonable.

[link to www.nliteos.com]

I think there are some stripped down versions of win 7 as well.

Yeah, XP was designed for the users, whereas win7 was designed for cia and hardware vendors...

I still think that it should at least run nearly as fast as on xp. I mean the decoder is just a simple process with lot of context switching, obviously the win7 kernel has a bad thread managment...

The only thing i can think of is that either the controll of the overlay interface of the gfx-driver is fubar, or something is amiss with the processor handling.

That means i gonna make a test with "null" output and see if the load decreases, and also search a way how to force the quantum resolution down to the minimum and see if it helps.
