Why is win7 so damn slow?
Fuck. I don't get it!!

I just made again a performance comparision between xp and win7, with video playback. Win7 needs at least 50% more power for the exact same task!

What i did, playback of the exact same file, with same codec and same setting on the same player:

CPU: Laptop P3 @1.2G
Player: mpc-hc
Codec: mpc's own
Codec: Xvid, SD 720x576, 16:9 anamorph
File: Railway docu, 2mbps

Both systems are clean, no av running, latest drivers installed. "mpc-hc.exe" shows on:
XP: ~45%
Win7: ~80%

Why?? They said that kernel manangment (comtext-switching) had been improved... yeah to need more power or what.

Anyone an idea? And please no comments like "buy new hardware", i've hardware modified and tuned this machine, running like a charm and love it (as long as i'm using XP).

I'm praying that there's someone with real professional knowledge about in-deep kernel modifing!

I'm sure that it's something about context-switching...

--------------------------------------------------------
Last Edit: (so that you don't need to scroll to the last post)
I now have done multiple cpu-laod comparisions between xp and win7. I want one and for all to get rid of my dual-boot configurations and settle with one M$-OS at last.
Any Task needs about 50 to 100% more power on 7, no matter what machine. Here are for example the results from my good laptop: (CPU is running at lowest clock)

Playback of video trough EVR/VMR9
Win7: 53%
XP: 33%
Playback through VMR7:
Win7: 33%
XP: 20%

CPU load of Process Explorer and Samurize (which i use to isplay basic speed data alays oon top). Both in idle mode, cpu running on lowest clock:

Win7: ~ 1,5%
XP: < 1% (doesnt show any load most of the time)

That means any thread needs higher load on win7, causes a higher power consumption, has a higher drain on the battery and raises your energy bill.

So who is the more energy efficient OS?

Considered the still present features like Icoloumnprovider and a real hibernation progress display, has a lower memory foootprint and is easier to configure...

Windows 7 flies out of my room immediately!!! To be run over by a car

And i will use the freed hardisk space for linux and ReactOS. I've heard they are planning to switch into beta phase...

Are you running 64-bit win7?
If not maybe your system cannot be optimally used.

anyway I'll go obvious on you and tell you to switch to Ubuntu.

How much ram does your system use on win7 after windows boots and idles? If it's like 700megs, that could be a prob. I try to always stay under 200 on XP, makes everything run smoother. I disable so many services.

Same, but I highly doubt P3 supports 64bit.

This might help. Try turning off the Aero theme. That will help a lot.

P3, you're running a pentium III prcoessor??? have you thought about the fact that that technology is at least a decade old?!!! in those days the programs were written to fit the demand of those current processors, but nowadays even with win7 running only at 1.2ghz and a pentium 3, you're just asking for slow!

Re: Why is win7 so damn slow?
VS xp? Well you will notice some slowing, but mainly it's because 7 loads up media streaming etc at boot up. You can disable a bunch of this and it will be as fast as XP.

I know how to tune and tweak a system! And all these running -faster tips are nothing but BS!

The Ram is maxed out with 512MB ram. (I tried more, but than it bsods, it's a bios bug.)

As is said, i keep my systems clean: XP idles at 130MB, Win7 at 250-300MB, no need for paging. System is Uniwill with Sis630/730

Unluckily, ReactOS is not yet usable, though i already can play music with it on this machine ;-)

I have one 386, was the first machine in the family. Hey and it still runs!!

I have faster machines too, but as i said i love this one as i modded it myself (not just upgrades like anyone else - i mean in depth circuitry changes!), and it is still fast enough for browsing, office, hearing music and watching videos.

Ubuntu is installed too, but can't handle the installed wifi-card.

Gaming - don't need it, only a waste of time!

There's the problem. ^^
What laptop do you have? Had a shitty 800 MHz P3 laptop back in the day and it only took 100Mhz SD RAM where the chips are on BOTH sides, single sided DIMMS would not work!

Your P3 @ 1.2 (oc'd? or tualatin?) sounds like you need 133 mhz dimms, but i guess you knew that already. Look if the working dimm is single or double sided and check if the not working one is different. ^^

Windows 7 system requirements
If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

I know you don't want to hear it, but your system isn't made to run 7. Stick with XP until you can get a laptop made in this decade.

First machine in my family was an old 286 my mom got free in ~ '92. Spent ages on Prince of Persia. ^^

Nothing wrong with old laptops and i was just joking you anyways. Your laptop is faster than any netbook, so all is fine. Hardmodding sounds interesting, what exactly did you do? OC? Maybe the RAM bug lies there? ^^
