I take niacin for restless legs. It works, gets rid of the creepy feeling.
Buy the "non blush" formula, if you don't and take too much it will cause you to blush and itch for a while.

Thank you so much for posting this.

My oldest son was diagnosed with ADHD about 1 1/2 years ago. The teachers at his school have been HOUNDING me to put him on meds, and I just can't do it. But, he does need something, right now we get by with behavior therapy stuff and keeping him on a strict schedule helps.

GREAT LINK!!

Taking 1,000 mg of vitamin B-3 three times a day often cures mild to moderate depression. Dramatic results are often achieved within one week of beginning this nutritional program, especially in alcoholics. (1)

Sometimes a simple deficiency of vitamin D causes depression. 3,000 I.U./day from all sources can alleviate the problem. (2)

3,000 mg/day or more of niacin (vitamin B-3), along with the same quantity of vitamin C, taken in divided doses throughout the day can successfully treat both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. (3)

Vitamins B-3, B-6, C and the minerals magnesium and zinc frequently produce a good response in ADHD and autistic children. (4)

Vitamins B-6, folate, and B-12 taken together lower elevated homocysteine levels in the elderly while improving mental function. (5)

Hi Amy

I know what it's like to have a child with behavioral problems & feel for you! I have 3 children all raised exactly the same with the same diet etc & yet my middle son from as young as 1yr old was 'different'.

After starting pre school I was told he had 'autistic tendencies' at 12 he was diagnosed with Aspergers (after 12 months on Ritalin & not knowing long term side effects I took him off it. His nan rang me about a show she had watched on the dangers & effects of preservative 262 used in products such as bread to have a longer shelf life. I have since that day only ever bought bread without that preserve & 3 weeks later couldn't believe the change in him)& now he has been diagnosed with acute Schizophrenia.

He has started on orthomolecular therapy (while still taking his anti psychotics) 3 days ago & I will definitely update his progress (be it good or bad) in a months time.

I hope you can find something that will help your little man red_heart

Same here Amy and miffed. My son was diagnosed with aspergers at age 13 but I wounldnt allow any medications. He's 19 now and after of behavioral problems he is behaving and living on his own. I am still working with him on getting his GED at least- perhaps the B3 will help.

As an aside, I just started taking 50mg B3 in a formulated drink and whatever depression and anxiety I had is nearly gone.

Thanks for the thread, OP.

Vitamin B3—also known as niacin and —may improve the pain-relieving effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).1 This vitamin may also help maintain a healthy nervous system2—important for many spine conditions.

Vitamin B12 is typically known as the vitamin that can amp up your energy, but it also helps keep the body's nerve and blood cells healthy and helps make DNA.3 A 2000 study on vitamin B12 and low back pain found that taking this vitamin may help ease back pain, too.4

The Research Advisory Committee of the National Institute of Mental Health reviewed pertinent scientific data through 1979 and agreed that megavitamin therapy was ineffective and could be harmful. After the U.S. Defense Subcommittee looked into this therapy, it was removed as a treatment covered by CHAMPUS, the insurance program for military dependents.

Various claims that megavitamins and megaminerals are effective against psychosis, learning disorders, and mental retardation in children were debunked in reports by the nutrition committees of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in 1976 and 1981 and by the Canadian Academy of Pediatrics in 1990 and 2000 [3]. Both groups warned that there was no proven benefit in any of these conditions and that megadoses can have serious toxic effects. The 1976 AAP report concluded that a "cult" had developed among followers of megavitamin therapy [4]

In 1991, Dutch researchers reported their evaluation of 53 controlled trials of the effects of niacin, vitamin B6, and multivitamins on mental functions. They concluded:

Virtually all trials show serious shortcomings: in the number of participants, the presentation of baseline characteristics and outcomes, and the description of changes in concomitant treatments. Only in autistic children are some positive results are found with very high dosages of vitamin B6 combined with magnesium, but further evidence is needed before more definitive conclusions can be drawn. For many other indications (hyperactive children, children with Down's syndrome, IQ changes in healthy schoolchildren, schizophrenia, psychological functions in healthy adults and geriatric patients) there is no adequate support from controlled trials in favor of vitamin supplementation [5].

Well, the problem is totally different if one gets depression as a result of inheritance or a long row of emotional traumas. This is the real mental depression where niacin cannot do much besides making you feel better for a short period of time. To reach the mind level, that vibrational level, one needs vibrational medicine. And these are the homeopathic remedies, vibrational remedies. Just because one knows that homeopathy can help is not enough, one has to find a real good homeopath. While there is not much difference between MDs (with some exceptions), as they follow the standard procedures they learned in school, the difference between homeopaths could be big.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1601759

Thank you for this information! I am curious whether you can suggest any good books on vibrational medicine?

You can pick St. John's Wort at the edge of roads or pasture areas and drink like a tea and this can help.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 992118

St. John's Wort can cause a hypertensive crisis when taken with blood pressure medication. As far as I am aware, only one form of Niacin has been researched medically for lowering cholesterol---NADH ( reduced B-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). This is most likely the Niacin being used for Schizophrenia and mental disorders. Niacin can cause flushing, and as one OP said, in high doses, liver damage. Therefore, before taking alternative medicines, consult with you provider. I have seen positive effects with alternative medications, but due to potential adverse reactions, it's best to speak with your doctor first.

I will answer this as best I can as it was possibly accidentally skipped over.

If you have a mental health issue & involuntarily hospitalized, you will have to stay there until the medical board deem you 'mentally well'. Therefor they will trial you on one/several medications until they find the right one where they will then pronounce you 'socially normal' (even if you are a drooling zombie) you then have to promise to stay on the medication prescribed for you by the hospital board/tribunal to be 'released'.

AWS: If I do not press this point, a reader will: Maintained high doses of niacin may raise liver function tests, and this is used as evidence of harm.

AH: Niacin is not liver toxic. Niacin therapy increases liver function tests. But this elevation means that the liver is active. It does not indicate an underlying liver pathology. Dr. Bill Parsons discussed this extremely well in his book on niacin and cholesterol (Cholesterol Control Without Diet; Lilac Press, 2000). I personally have been on 1500 to 6000 milligrams daily since 1955. The biggest danger of taking niacin is that you live longer. One of my patients is 112. She does cross-country skiing and has been on niacin for 42 years. The fear doctors have of niacin is not based on data or facts and, like any myth, is very had to eradicate. So many patients are on niacin that by chance some will also have liver damage from other conditions such as alcoholism, hepatitis and so on. Niacin does not make it any better nor worse.

Lowers Cholesterol

Non-flush niacin affects your blood cholesterol levels. Niacin has notable effects on improving the levels of high-density lipoprotein, known as HDL or "good" cholesterol, in your bloodstream. In fact, niacin may improve your HDL cholesterol better than prescription medications known as statins. In addition, non-flush niacin lowers your unhealthy low-density lipoprotein, known as LDL or "bad" cholesterol. Although beneficial, MayoClinic.com notes that diabetics should use caution when taking niacin, because it can raise blood sugar.

It's good that you never took them! I'd keep all your old prescription medicines clearly labeled in a cool, dark place. That way, if you or others needed them, you have them. After all, you paid for them.

Just keep in mind that a few of them can be a problem after their expiration dates. Most are OK though.

Re: Natural Cure for Depression, Bipolar, ADHD, Schizophrenia & High Cholesterol
Found this on another forum, good info for those thinking of beginning a niacin supplement. I will be going to the store today to start my own. I am currently trying to quit smoking and am wondering what kind of positive effects niacin may have....

"Immediate-release/crystalline niacin is available as a nutritional supplement and is inexpensive and effective. The niacin in each table is released immediately and usually provokes a “hot flush,” a warm, itchy feeling of the skin. For this reason, starting at small doses, such as 250 mg, can be helpful. The dose can be increased gradually (by 250 mg every four weeks) to achieve the desired amount. Doses greater than 500 mg per day should be used only under medical supervision. Some people take their niacin in small doses, three or four times daily, to spread out the dose. This could be unsafe, and I recommend that patients never take immediate-release niacin more than twice a day.
Extended-release niacin is a time-release preparation, but does not act as slowly as slow-release niacin. This makes it safer than the slow-release preparations that can cause liver side effects. Extended-release niacin also provokes fewer hot flushes than immediate-release niacin. An example is Slo-Niacin®, which is sold over the counter. Niaspan® is an extended-release niacin preparation sold as a prescription drug.
By contrast, slow-release niacin preparations reduce the hot-flush effect by releasing niacin over an extended period of 12 hours or longer. Most of these preparations are unsafe and I do not recommend them. “No-flush” niacin preparations, such as inositol hexaniacinate and nicotinamide, are widely sold as niacin alternatives that do not cause hot flushes. In my experience, however, they simply do not work. In other words, no flush, no effect.

The correct dose of niacin depends on what abnormality you and your doctor are trying to correct. To raise HDL and correct small LDL, a dose of 750-1000 mg a day usually provides full benefit. Increasing this dose to 1500 mg a day may provide slightly greater benefit. To reduce LDL or Lp(a), higher doses (from 1000 mg up to 4000-5000 mg per day) are often used, with higher doses providing greater effects. However, doses this high should be taken only with a physician’s supervision. Keep in mind that it may take three months or longer to realize the full lipid-optimizing benefits of niacin."
