Don't miss out that Orthomolecular therapy can include several modalities, one is like another fringe medicine, Clinical Ecology, which focuses on allergies as affecting ANY organ of the body, brain (mental illness,) ears (deafness, ringing,) lungs (asthma, etc.,) and is treated by pure water fasts for several days with foods slowly introduced one at a time--also tested by the usual allergy skin & blood tests like a Cytotoxic Blood Test which mixes about 100 food samples with blood and then damage to the blood cells is graded with a microscope.

I had a friend that was able to go off meds for Manic Depression after finding out she was allergic to almost every major food group, cow milk, tomatoes, wheat, etc. and she did great on a restricted diet with goat milk, millet bread, etc.

Orthomolecular also looks at vitamin deficiencies or dependencies, some people need megavitamin therapy if they have some genetic condition where they can't absorb or synthesize certain vitamins or minerals.

And lastly there is much like the Feingold diet for hyperactive kids, where attention is paid to avoid synthetics, food additives, non-organic food full of pesticides and other chemicals, food dyes, preservatives, refined sugar, processed foods, etc. i.e. eat basic natural organic foods freshly made.

That rounds out the Orthomolecular approach, it isn't just about one particular vitamin, and certain people need more than others. One last modality that has come from this is also using certain nutraceuticals that are similar to some of the "Smart Drugs", precursors to brain chemicals or involved in metabolism, like 5-Hydroxytryptophan, SAM-e, Lecithin or herbs like Ginkgo Biloba that can affect memory or mood.

One can read up and experiment with these but it helps to get some expert consultation with an Orthomolecular doctor. I would highly recommend looking into the allergy angle, people are often allergic to foods they crave the most or have eaten continually since childhood, so things like cow mild & wheat often top the list.
