Can Artificial Intelligence such as Computers Become Conscious and Sentient?

To have a computer that is conscious and aware isn't a very good thing to think about. I would have to say to be conscious and aware isn't being a sentient, as a human is, it don't have a soul or spirit, it isn't alive as a human is.
What would its' being aware do to it, when it becomes aware that it isn't a living being, only a copy of a humans thoughts put together.

Inevitably the ability of artificial intelligence will increase and at some point this intelligence will appear to be alive - but is it? The implications of this type of existence have been explored many times in many different ways by Sci-Fi writers. Now we think the situation is coming closer to reality and we believe humanity must be ready for this. One very-good sci-fi film called The Bicentennial Man explored the issue of a robot that gradually evolves and upgrades itself to be more and more like a real human and ultimately is given the status of being a sentient human with full human rights - In that film the robot is a 'good-guy'. We have to prepare for the possibility of independent artificial intelligence not being so friendly and not liking humans even though we are responsible for creating it.  -A logical advanced machine can be a formidable enemy.
