An M16 is fully automatic. So, you probably can't own it.

Basically, either one (AK47 style or M4 style) will do the job. Both have pros and cons. The biggest thing you can do is get realistic training. Also, you need more than one. You need a backup. Then, you need a backup for your backup.

The weapon is important. But, the person using the weapon is the most important.

It's a tool, it's like asking which is better a hammer or a sledge hammer.

AK for close in work is brilliant, won't fail you in a pinch, cheap, has great penetration, blast through walls and doors at will, without alot of practice though only accurate out to about 100 yards, 200 if your good, after that your just hoping you hit something.

AR accurate, precision tool, lethal bullet do to it's unstable projectile once it enters flesh. Doesn't have the power or penetration of the AK, more accurate at long distance, (MUST KEEP IT CLEAN) This is a precision tool, although some versions are becoming more rugged, and more dirt proof.

M16 Full auto, great weapon, accurate at distance exact same as the AR just a little different platform. Like the guy said above if it's a full auto you need a license, but if you believe that the zombies are coming, and you feel comfortable hiding it, and not getting caught with it because you think government will (A) be your enemy in the near future so it doesn't matter, or (B) will no longer exist very soon because of their collapsing power base, and currency default then who really gives a shit, take what you can get and prepare right. I mean if we're going to be living in a world of no laws, I doubt if anyone is going to be asking you for your class 3A license.

If your leaning towards the AK 47 you should really take a look at the czech Vz 58. The VZ 58 is everything the AK should have been.

They both shoot the 7.62x39 round but the VZ is a milled receiver the AK is stamped.
VZ is striker fired which in turn has less moving parts.
VZ is more accurate, Lighter, smaller.
Vz design makes it have a more linear recoil and less muzzle rise.
The are both uber reliable
Vz ergo's are light years ahead of the AK.
Vz is quicker to point.

I am unbiased and the The VZ is a far superior weapon than the AK.

That being said the M4 is better than the VZ in some area's
well most area's
But not in reliablity and the 7.62x39 round is some great stopping power.
Also the VZ is super quik and easy to strip and clean.

Look around and dont buy into all the fan boy bs about each weapon.

If you can afford a high end AR grab it but if you cant look at a VZ 58

Wow I am impressed GLP dudes, the first thread of this kind that isn't full of AK flammers.

Having said that, spend about 1100 and own both. Although if you do want a M-16 be prepared to spend around 10k!!

Another AK recommendation, before you buy one look at the receiver. If it says WASR be wary. The best AK for the Price is a nicely converted(350-400$) Saiga. ALthough if ya want to spend around 1k for an ak Arsenal makes very good ones.

As far as the AR, does some research, many many great cheap options. DPMS and Rguns are a good place to start.

czech weapons tend to be superior in many ways. excepr for maybe the vz52 rifle.

You lot can have the originals, in the states very few semi 58's, the aftermarket receivers have some problems, but parts kits were cheap and plentiful at one time. Mags are a kind of problem but not too bad, just no new ones, and since they are aluminum, they can be damaged easily. Marstar still have any?

What are u using it for? Long distance, CQC, hunting, range shooting, SHtF, home defense. There's a gun for every situation and u need to find one that best fights ur needs. For example, if its home defense ur better off with a shotgun with buckshot. A ar15 bullet will penetrate to ur neighbors house or even ur own house potentially putting family members in trouble. A shotgun with buckshot doesn't have the velocity to rip through houses and just the sound of u racking it should send people running.

Re: AK-47, AR-15 or M-16?
Listen to the poster who mentioned ammo. He is right. Get at least 1000 rounds or more per gun as a START.

Like I said before, both are good weapons. I prefer the M4 carbine because it is easier to put optics on, the ammo is easier to carry, and the accuracy.

But, again, both are good.

Here are two myths that need to be debunked:

1. ARs have to be kept clean. Nope. They have to be kept lubed. With the right amount of lube, they can run for thousands of rounds.

2. People will tell you all you need is a gun that can hit "a man sized target". When bullets start to fly, there are no man sized targets. People hide. You may have a head, foot, or other small body part as your only target.

For these situations, the AK round will penetrate cover better. The AR will be more accurate.

It is all pros and cons. There are no perfect weapons. Your fighting skill, your decision making process, and just luck will determine more whether you live or die vs. which gun you pick.

Also take into consideration where you intend to be at.

Woods, plains, urban, house to house?

M14, or a draganov may be a better solution for out in more open areas. These guns although a little bigger will still function well in urban or wooded areas also. Less clip capacity, but a far bigger round with more stopping power and range.

Whatever you get, practice, practice, practice, you will soon know the limitations of whatever tool you buy. SPeaking of practice cheap ammo makes it easier to afford to practice. You may also want to go out into the country on someones farm so you don't have to fill out a bunch of forms and be logged into some database.

I started out with an AK, then I felt like distance was an issue, so I got a nagant (range 1000 yards), What you will eventually find out, is each and every weapon has it's limitations, and there is no such thing as the perfect weapon.

The draganov would have come close to being both a nagant, and an AK, but at range isn't as good as a nagant, and in close range isn't as agile, and not as much ammo capacity as an AK.

Same with an M14, not as much ammo capacity as an AR, but more power, not as much range as a sniper rifle, but as accurate for sure as the draganov.

I think the AK is good especially for affordability, reliability, cheap ammo and ease of maintenance. The AK is also available in .308 or the NATO 7.62x51 as the Russian Saiga rifles which can be modified with one additional U.S. part for use with hi (20-25) cap mags (3 U.S. parts) for a full-power battle rifle. In addtion to the standard 7.62x39 AK's are available in the 5.56 or U.S. .223 which is generally a more accurate version with even less expensive ammo.
