Lottery winner on food stamps: ‘I thought maybe it was okay because I’m not working’
While most people have played the “if I had a million dollars I would ____ ” thought game, few fill that blank in with “stay on public assistance.”

Amanda Clayton, a 24-year-old from Lincoln Park, Michigan, is one of the few who does, and she is getting away with it. Clayton won $1 million from the Michigan State Lottery this fall, but she is still collecting and using $200 a month in food assistance from the taxpayers with her Michigan Bridge Card.

“I thought that they would cut me off, but since they didn’t, I thought maybe it was okay because I’m not working,” the lottery winner who just purchased a new house and car told Local 4 in Detroit. The station even filmed her shamelessly purchasing goods...

.....if anyone who just won the lottery can think it is even MORALLY (let alone legally) okay to get assistance just because they aren't working....then they should be sterilized.

From OP's link.

"“I feel that it’s okay because I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay,” she said. “I have two houses.”"

It's the same in the UK.

Our Lotto is always won by criminals just out of jail, or wealthy middle-class business people who don't need the fucking money!

One time the Lotto Jackpot was won by a rapist who had recently served a few years in the Big House.

Of course, the topper was the young criminal chav who won millions (it's all tax-free over here) and set up a demolition-derby racetrack in a field attached to the property he bought in a nice, quiet village. Well, it was quiet, until he and his criminal mates started racing junker cars 24-7.

Re: Lottery winner on food stamps: ‘I thought maybe it was okay because I’m not working’
What apparently everyone including the reporters fails to understand is that once a person is approved for food stamps they are entitled to receiving the remainder of their contracted benefits regardless of changing circumstances.

I could be approved for food stamps today, start a job tomorrow, and still be eating good for another 12 months.

In my opinion, this particular clause is either to help people get back on their feet, or to save lazy welfare workers the arduous task of actually policing their applicants..

If you receive food stamps and then pick up a job working at walmart or mcdonalds, you will still have a hard time making it to work and paying rent. And if you are supporting more than just yourself? Good luck..

As for whether this is ethical, it isn't my place to judge; I am definitely not trained in politics or the judicial process..

I'm damn jealous of her smooth million though. xD

Re: Lottery winner on food stamps: ‘I thought maybe it was okay because I’m not working’
It's outrageous, it's wrong, she knows it but has no morals or discipline.

However, and this is a very small point I admit, she is a taxpayer. She paid probably, what, close to $550,000 in taxes on those winnings? She owns two homes and presumably pays property taxes going to public schools. She will pay close to another 10% on the various things she will purchase with that money which should be a nice capital injection into her local economy and needless to say some of that money that will go into the coffers to assist actual real needy people who rely on food stamps.

After they take the +/- $650,000 in taxes from her which I will not say is right or wrong, but that yes taxes are too high, it's a nice consolation that she gets some of her money back through the taxes she has paid. Face it, taxes on sweepstakes/lottery/game winnings is ridiculous.

What does this mean? The state-run lottery just pays her a fraction of the million dollars she won and keeps probably the majority of it for themselves.

It's wrong and it should be stopped but $200 a month is heavily outweighed with what she has paid in taxes. She is not in need and should not receive it but this should just be a fair warning to the politicians and electorate who, though this had happened previously, have not acted to stop it. Meanwhile people who do need assistance are told they do not qualify or that they only qualify for a little. The bigger lesson here is too many on welfare more resemble this woman than someone who is in actual desperate need.

My take: It's a failing system, this woman was able to strike gold and is just another nail in the coffin, one of very many and is quite low on the totem pole of things wrecking this nation.
