There are all kinds of gangs in Tijuana and along the Mexican side of the Texas border, so they're not that rare. Who do you think ships the drugs across the border for the cartels?

I agree that Western culture does not do, or care, enough to bring the lower levels of society up to a more productive level, and part of the frustration that led me to start hanging out with gang members was when I realized that there was still plenty of racism and favoritism around, and that this would be a big obstacle for me as a young Hispanic male.

(I went to affluent Anglo schools from the third grade up until I graduated, and I was smart enough to be included in classes with intelligent Anglo kids, and much of the hatred I developed came from the abuses and prejudice I suffered through during this time.)

It all comes back to personal choices and the circumstances one experiences while growing up. Upbringing and 'the system' can only take so much of the blame.

Are American-Mexican gang members disgusting? This is a personal opinion, but as for me, I spent a lot of time creasing up my slacks, starching up my white shirts, and fixing up my hair to impress the ladies. Anglo, Hispanic and Negro females from diverse backgrounds did not find me disgusting at all. They found me and my friends intriguing instead.

Are Chicano gang members uneducated? Yes, because most of the ones I knew/know never graduated from high school, and other than a couple that went into the military, they never got any further education than that.

Are Chicano gang members retarded? No. I can't remember the source, but a study centering on Los Angeles gangs showed that gang leaders were among the most intelligent Hispanics around, even when compared with people not in gangs from the same socio-economic area.

Are they criminals? Definitely, and this is the part that I wish would change, because this is what is holding the Chicano back as a whole. We can thank the media for not providing better role models for us here, because there are quite a few of them out there.

Are Chicano gang members subhuman? Not at all. If you know anything about history, you'd know that there is always a section of society that will try to break the rules and get away with things. Gang members are oppressed, and they turn corrupt and violent as a result.

You may express your opinion, but historically, there is no right or wrong answer here. Whichever section gets oppressed the most always reacts this way.
