(CBS News) WASHINGTON -- The number one question is motive: Why did an American Army sergeant walk into an Afghan village and kill 16 civilians?

What appeared to be a cold-blooded shooting rampage drew a harsh reaction from Afghan President Hamid Karzai. He labeled it an "assassination" and demanded justice.

President Obama, on damage control, talked with Karzai on the phone and promised to investigate. In a statement, Mr. Obama called the killings "tragic" and "shocking." He also tried to paint it as an isolated incident -- saying the attack "does not represent the exceptional character of our military."

Residents of three villages in the Panjwai District of Kandahar Province described a terrifying string of attacks in which the soldier, who had walked more than a mile from his base, tried door after door, breaking in to kill within three houses.

At the first, the man gathered 11 bodies, including those of four girls younger than 6, and set fire to them, villagers said.

This just seems so bizarre -- especialy because he just returned to the base and turned himself in.

US and Afghan officials have said the attack began around 3 am in the two villages, which are fairly close to a US base in a region that was the focus of Barack Obama's military surge in the south starting in 2009.

Villagers described how they cowered in fear as gunshots rang out while the soldier roamed from house to house firing on those inside. They said he entered three homes and set fire to some of the bodies. Eleven of the dead were from a single family.

(KABUL, Afghanistan) — Afghans expressed doubt Monday that a single U.S. Army soldier could have shot and killed 16 civilians in houses over a mile (2 kilometers) apart and burned the bodies afterward. The killings in southern Afghanistan have reignited fury at the U.S. presence following a wave of deadly protests over Americans burning Korans.

The U.S. military has said there is no indication that more than one soldier carried out the attacks in two villages in Kandahar province before dawn Sunday. The soldier blamed for the shootings is in custody. But villagers told Afghan officials they heard shots being fired from several directions.

It amazes me that the only response I have gotten to this thread so far is 'Chuck Norris' which is a totally gross statement and indicative of how depraved we have become that we can't even feel horror at the execution of 9 children, many who were females under the age of SIX YEARS OLD. The gun was shoved in their mouths and the back of their head was blown off.

You are correct to a degree, all soldiers undergo mimd control from the moment they enter the bus to join up.

The shouting, the indoctrinaton often leads to mental breakdown. So its no suprise that many lose thier marbles.

Most who lose thier marbles end up committing suicide others go on killing rampages.

My cousin has been over there 5 times between Iraw and Afghanistan. I was amazed when I heard. Then I was sad.

Yes as i remember quite well from my time in the service, there is definitely a certain amount of 'breaking down' happening in your early training. Marines and Army have it the worst.
