Certain personality traits prefer different professions.

While someone could completely have the opposite personality profile than is typical for his or her profession, in general knowing what kind of person typically chooses that profession is helpful in knowing how to (or whether to) deal with them.

People who want to be in charge often gravitate towards positions of authority.

People who like weapons also like authority in general.

People who have difficulty succeeding in something more intellectually challenging but are in decent shape physically, and want a position of authority, don't have a lot of other options. There is also the army but when you start you don't get to have authority over anyone.

This typical person is not necessarily stupid, but generally not brilliant either. Not necessarily in great shape, but they find it easier to prepare to complete physical tests than academic tests. They are more likely male, and were probably never very popular in high school, though probably not completely outcast either. In high school, they had no power. Now, they have some power.

AND BOY ARE THEY GOING TO USE IT, ANY CHANCE THEY GET.

If they think the situation will let them get away with lecturing you as if you were a little child, frankly, they're very inclined to do so. They really enjoy this part of the job. It beats the big part of the job that is just sitting around, and it beats the part of the job where they might die at any moment too. This is the authority they signed up for. Sure, it's not as good as pinning someone who's been identified as the evil criminal down and putting cuffs on them while making smart-Alec remarks, but opportunities like that are very rare. Opportunities for egotistical lecturing are much more plentiful.

DO NOT DENY THE VERY THING A PERSON ENJOYS ABOUT THEIR JOB AND THEN EXPECT THAT THEY'LL DO THE OTHER PART OF THEIR JOB WELL - You know, the part that helps you, but that isn't particularly fun at all.

Therefore, when encountering a cop, get ready for some finger-wagging lecturing, and put your patient hat on. If you can, try to use a sincere voice to either thank them or agree with whatever it is they are saying about how you did bad.

After they are done their favorite part of the job, a lot of cops will bend over backwards to help you if you're a victim. They kinda like being a hero too. Most will at least make some attempt. Of course there are thoroughly corrupt cops but they are the minority.

It sucks that most cops are insecure, but that's life. I do think it's better than no cops at all.

Yep. Whenever someone has caused a situation to blow up in their own face, they conveniently leave out all the details.

Police in the UK are great.

Sorry America, but this is the truth.

Practially zero police brutality & they like dogs.

Funny - Where I live, the cops (town and county) are great. We're on first name basis with many of them, including the Chief and the Sheriff.

I grew up in a cop family (Dad is retired and sister is a now-retired Lieutenant.

I have NEVER experienced or seen these versions of cops everyone describes. Only on TV (FOX Cops for example) or when someone provokes them with their own nasty attitude. Now THAT I've seen, several times (have a duplex across the street that likes to provoke cops).

Just because you have seen or experienced a few "bad apples", do NOT assume that ALL cops are the exact same. That is an 100% inaccuracy.

Friday night i went out to see some country music. I ended up going with a couple who had shown up at my house, friends of a housemate; it was birthdays for them, and they wanted to see music too.

So as the night wears on and they both get more and more hammered, closing time comes and he is SCREAMING at her in the street, I am trying to get her to walk away, take a cab with me and crash back at the house, cool out...well I am leaning in the car trying to talk to her, he definitely should not be driving and it is highly likely they were both on pills as well as being shitfaced on alcohol...he drives off, dragging me by the legs, face-first on the street, with the car; front tooth goes through my bottom lip and breaks in half, I have major whiplash, etc....this other guy calls the cops...cops LET THE DRUNK ABUSER DRIVE AWAY with his GF!!!!! I am sitting there with blood pouring down my face and they let him just DRIVE OFF!

I don't know why or how this got pulled up again after so long, however, since it has, I'll give an update. they fired the guy, seriously.
They said it wasn't because of what happened to me, however, he was fired, they would not tell me why or give further explanation.
My reply was, thank goodness, as he surely would have ended up killing someone.
Also, would like to add that I have been burglarized since then, and DIDN'T call the Police.
I know for a fact that they aren't all bad. I personally know some leos, it's just that they really, really need to clean their own houses. get these rouge guys and gals out, any way you can, because they give you all a bad name and that's not fair to anyone.
