Do cats really keep snakes away from your

I'm curious about this too. Kitty cats are awesomely cute. I could use a few dozen.

Well mine brought one home in his mouth two days ago, keeping them away not sure, bringing them home, yep.

well they are said to keep evil spirits away, and since snakes are associated with evil spirits, i would guess yes.

I hope so...

Ours do and some have been bitten multiple times by the copperheads that got overpopulated here yet it does not stop them.

They go to the vet get fixed and back to the hunting they go.
They kill skinks, frogs, hellgrammites they will eat the helgramite all but the pinchers on its head.

They are well fed and are not hungry even pampered but they still kill a crawler, flyer, leaper even a hissing growling thing is target to be attacked.

They go and drag them out even if they crawl under or in something they will not quit until they get them.

They dig up the shrews the moles....and kill them.

They are worse the killers when it is only for their sport.

That is when we find competing killer cats and banding of cats to kill.

I have to watch mine male cat he will go out and bring back his play thing alive and bring it right into the house through his cat door ...........turn it loose then stalk and terrorize and kill it eventually.

He is like a feline serial killer he brings them to his leer to keep them alive longer for his own sport.

The female just brings them in and gives them to my husband alive or dead.

The male will attack people very rarely but he will and if he hates them it will never be changed. He for some reason found or sees something in them him sees as enemy and never drops it.

My male would crawl up the britchy-leg of my dads pants and rub him and purr and just cling to him...he would even crawl up on dads shoulder and wash his hair and rub his face all over dads head....

The cat loved dad just by sight sound and smell.....dad never could keep the cat off him when he visited or break him form loving all over him.

I think it depends on the cat and its character but all we have ever had will kill snakes even go to the creek or woods to find and kill them.

I have never had a home with out a cat even if the cat is 18 years old it dies where it called home as one of us it is a family member.

They do help, but mostly due to keeping the rodent population in check.

You can also tell if a snake has taken up residence by the way your cat behaves. If a cat has encountered a snake, it will get 'jumpy'... spook at straps or scraps of rope and the like. Means it is time to pay attention, kick boards over before reaching for them and other snake savvy precautions.

My cats have killed non-poisonous snakes and have obviously killed, or tried to kill the rattlers too, since they've been bitten. If they survive the first bite, they rarely get bitten again. I assume they avoid close encounters entirely after that.

Love my barn cats! They also help keep the wild birds (and the diseases they can carry) out of the feed.

Just for the record.. no way would I let my cat outside if there was a snake out there. It's too dangerous.. my little Carl Shmarl is too important to me. Plus he's scared of being outside.

Some cats will kill snakes but also snakes can smell a cat I think. It might even just be the smell that would keep a snake away. So if you really don't care for cats and just want to be rid of snakes, you could try going to a sporting good's store and getting some urine from some sort of animal. You can buy bottles of this urine and the snakes will think a bobcat or wolf or some other predatory animal is on your property. Snakes can hunt by smelling so they would probably be able to smell it.

The cat has to know what a snake is to understand how to kill it. The first time a cat sees a snake, the cat isn't going to know how to kill it. A cat probably needs to see another cat or its mother killing a snake. If not, the cat is going to have to learn by luck. It might get bitten and suffer. It might learn by experience how it is done, but even so, it is taking a chance killing a snake.

Even a mongoose or some animal like a merecat can get bitten. They have to be agile, lean and fast. A fat pampered housecat would only kill a snake with luck or maybe the help of another cat.

If it is a mean ally cat that hunts your property then it might be able to get a snake. A cat has to hunt the snakes. If it is well fed it will not have to hunt. Some cats are naturally going to hunt even if they don't eat what they kill. Some cats are more aggressive and enjoy killing small creatures. I would say get a grey tabby. Get just a regular cat because some cats are bred to be very docile and you want a more aggressive cat. I don't expect a cat to be able to take a large rattle snake and kill it. It might scare one away from your property but I don't expect it would do very well if it were trying to actually kill and eat a rattlesnake or a larger poisonous snake.


If you have property and a cat in the United States then you are obliged by the laws that if you are calling the cat your pet, you must feed it and treat it humanely. If you overfeed it, it will get fat and like to lay around a lot. You want to socalise your cat so you can call it and it will come to you. You'll want to pet it some but not have it so spoiled that it wants nothing to do with the outdoors. You'll want to feed it to avoid being cruel but you will not want it to eat so much that it has little desire to hunt.

You need to put some food out for the cat that the cat can climb to reach but that other animals might find it hard to locate the food. If you put food outside in one place regularly, then every neighborhood animal is going to know that place. Then you will not know if you are really feeding the cat or every other animal. So maybe you will have to call the cat and feed it every day at a certain time, to make sure only the cat gets the food.


Anyway, you have to be kind to it, even if it is just for killing snakes. If you are not, someone could report you and you could be charged with animal cruelty. If you don't call the cat your pet but it is just on your property then someone could come and get it for being a nuisance animal. They could take it to the animal shelter.


Mostly if you have a lot of nuisance cats authorities try to at least round them up for spaying or neutering so they can not over breed. That is another problem if you have one female cat she can start her own colony of cats on your property. Then if you can not catch them to socialize them all, they will become ferel cats and run from humans. You would have to trap any unwanted cats and call an animal shelter.

Cats are tons faster, and more agile than dogs.

A cat is fast enough to get in a paw smack on both the strike and recoil.

I love my cat he is my hero and friend...he is now 17 nearly 18 years old and still a great fearsome protector of his territory called home....he is naturally a cat he loves his cat self and is happy to be a cat.

He even goes and gets my old female cat when she forgets how to get back home he goes and gets granny and leads her home.

My female sleeps with my husband in his room and loves him as her master and even as she owns him not him owning her. She is jealous over him and possessive over him.

The male is mine every since I found him when he was a baby he is mine true and tested faithfully my buddy. He will even come in on a beautiful day just to nap with me. He will drag me to bed when I have been up latter than he wants.


I am a cat fan big time....I was raised in a home that valued the cat and ferret.

Cats by nature hunt all reptiles. They are good to have around to discourage both the common variety and also the less seen types. But you also need to watch them. They can get themselves into trouble sometimes. My cat recently went up against a large Diamondback and refused to back down. They are quite fearless when it comes to reptiles. Reptiles know this and tend to stay clear
