Some buyers on EBAY are spending money, especially high end antiques and vintage costume jewelery. For example, an Augarten spanish rider sold for $510 with 10 bidders and this was on March 30, 2012. Another Augarten sold for $900 on a buy it now on April 4,2012. However, when you consider the fees that these sellers had to dish out, their profit margins are around 30%. So, to make money they have to upload 100's of items in order to make a net profit. Even in 2005, when I was selling on EBAY, I was loosing money. I made $1000 in one month and EBAY took $300, leaving me with a net profit of only $700.
I guess it really on what you are selling. It seems that antiques and vintage items are doing well. However, there are so many other places that one can sell that have little or no fees. So, in some cases it makes more sense to sell directly from either your own website or directly to the consumer via craigslist.
Quoting: Houdini 1382488 to give you an example .... if you buy an item for £50 .... and sell it on ebay for £100 You only make £12 profit after ebay fees and paypal fees ...(assuming you don't rip off the buyer with shipping costs) but bear in mind, it can take you 30 min to photograph the item, do the research and create the ebay listing/advert .... plus you have the stress Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15732359 I loved it when I could buy an item for 5 and sell for 50 or produce something for about 25p and sell it for 5. Ebay fees and pain were reasonable then. Other than that I'm with you, it's not worth the pain other than to get a few things out of the house.
