March was the first month. Then the second King of Rome, Numa Pompilus added Ianuarius (January) and Februarius (February) around 713 BC. Then there were some reforms and Pontifex Maximus Julius Caesar introduced the Julian Calendar in 46 BC. Then Quintilis(fifth month) was renamed Iulius (July) in honour of Julius Caesar in 44 BC and Sextilis(sixth month) was renamed Augustus (August) in honour of Augustus in 8 BC. Then in 1582 AD some adjustments were made and Pope Gregory VIII introduced the Gregorian calendar.
