Waiting for midnight, hungry families on food stamps give Walmart 'enormous spike'
[link to rockcenter.msnbc.msn.com]

At the stroke of midnight, a growing number of Americans are lining up at Walmart not to cash in on a holiday sale, but because they’re hungry.

The increasing number of Americans relying on food stamps to survive the sluggish economic recovery has changed the way the largest retailer in the United States does business.

Carol Johnston, Walmart’s senior vice president of store development, said that store managers have seen an “enormous spike” in the number of consumers shopping at midnight on the first of the month. That’s typically when those receiving federal food assistance have their accounts refilled each month.

Well, if YOU had a hungry family to feed and were desperate enough to be out in the middle of the night to get food, you might not find a regular grocery store open.

Wal-Mart does have some stores open 24/7.

And they DO sell name brands, and they regularly have the best prices in town on what they sell. SO, to make my food voucher card work the hardest, I'd shop there too. But I'd like to believe that I'd wait until morning to do the shopping.

Hope I'm never in the position to be needing to do this... but what do we know?

Food stamps are awarded based off the last two digits of one's social security number and therefore coincide with a date during the month which is a assigned for the range of numbers.

I'm on food stamps, and my account gets a deposit at 8am on the 5th of the month. Probably varies by state, but I am suspicious of disinfo, because I can't imagine any public sector human services agency operating at midnight.

One answer would be to have a community pull together to feed themselves. The community could have a place where -everyone- can stop in to get some food and get out of the weather, regarless of social or economic status or whether they make $1,000 or $100,000 per year. Could help strengthen communities by breaking down these barriers and helping people bond on an innate level. abduct

i used to work in an accounting office, one of our standard operating procedures was to send off the ACH tape by no later than 5 pm which would then be recieved by the federal reserve bank who would deposit by midnight. so this is actually standard practice. however every state is different. when i worked there i lived in California. I now live in Texas where i receive food stamps and my food stamps are refilled by no later than 8 am the day they are due. i have checked it at midnight a couple of times though. sometimes there there sometimes not. just depends i guess if they sent the ACH tape on time.

on my eyes it works this way

US government bankrupted

Americans bankrupted in personal debt (mostly generated by consumerism)

both own gazillions of dollars to china

the fed print money ----food stamps---people buy china goods---china collect dollars and buy commodities from americans that have to sell to eat

americans turn to their actual life style they can afford

china get back a fraction of american debt

Businesses accepting food stamps or EBT cards shouldn't be able to profit off the backs of the poor, the products people buy should be at cost.

WARNING
rant

And the White House response to this? Pile more burden on the middle working class.

They not only get cell phones, they get a credit card to buy what they wish, plus a food.

They get their nails done, have gold teeth, gold studs and tats and drive nice cars. They have numerous children with various fathers, while getting money back from the IRS, some claiming children who do not even live in the states.

So OP if you wrote this to gain sympathy for them, my sympathy has gone cold. Many of these "hungry" people are breaking the law and abusing the system.

To be sure the Democrats vote buying scheme will win again.
How can it fail? Dead voters, felons, illegals unite. With visions of all the very nice homes, cars to drive, Obama will have his citizen army. Ram through illegal gun control with the bought and paid for Congress, form a militia of his army and the take down is complete. Didn't I read somewhere of Homeland Security buying a very large amount of hollow points? Who would be using them and on who?

The New Black Panthers openly call for killing white asses, burying whites and digging whites up and killing whitey once more. And the Obama AG does nothing, he is too busy being a gun runner. Those drug lords may come in handy as generals.

My apologizes to any of that are truly needy and deserve the help. My anger is from the misuse by some and the hatred and contempt directed by some towards the working class.

Food stamps may be good for some, but many waste the money.

In my local Circle K convenience store, where food is 2X the price of a grocery, I see people all the time buying snack food with their SNAP card, and then paying cash for a 12 pack and some lottery tickets.

There is no personal responsibility for using the money wisely, and now by calling it SNAP, any stigma attached is gone. It has become a monthly debit card, use as you wish.

I'm sorry, but this system needs to end.

Re: Waiting for midnight, hungry families on food stamps give Walmart 'enormous spike'
I recall an incident at my local wally world concerning the abuse of food stamps.

This lady was out at 2am, with her 3 children who couldn't have been older than 7, her color is of no import, I sighed as I walked up behind her 2 buggies full and began to wait patiently.

She unloaded the first cart and paid with her food stamp card and thats when I noticed what was in the second cart.

The clerk grabs the portable scanner and walks around to scan the 72inch HD tv as the lady fishes through her purse for her visa...
I know this, because twice during the search she snapped at her daughter, asking if she'd returned the visa.

The tv rang up at 600+ and, with the lady no unloading garbage onto the counter to get her credit card... I lost it.

I snapped all over her, spitting things like how disgusted I was at her actions, that she is what is wrong with the country and that she's setting a wonderful example for her young kids. She tried to interrupt, getting the typical indignation look on her face, so I dropped the frozen pizza, the only damn thing I'd stopped for and raised my shirt exposing a nipple and offered it to her to suck on some more, since she just finished sucking on it to buy a tv...

Moral of the story is, cops get called AND I'm the bad guy!
Told to never return to that particular wally world again!

Yeah, thats when I stopped capitalizing 'merica.
