To who ever posted the bgs seismograph - UK, thank you - that signal seems to be over a long time period, hmmm........, don't remember one over such a long time before on there

np, for a 7.4 thousands of miles away, it sure had some punch.

Re: 7.9+ Mag Earthquake near Acapulco, Mexico - DEVELOPING
Anyone who has taken a decent Geology course knows that science's understanding of what causes earthquakes is infantile.

Before WWII, the leading theory was that celestial bodies (mainly the moon) played a roll in earthquakes.

That was before they had mapped the bottoms of the ocean floor. Mapping them during the war led them to plate tectonics.

My personal theory is that there was a throwing the baby out with the bath water when they switched to plate tectonics. Basically, I believe they replace a theory when they should have been adding the new one onto the old one.

I am not saying Nibiru is real, but I would bet money on it that the amateurs out here who have done excellent research on the celestial impact will be shown to have been ahead of mainstream science on the celestial piece of the puzzle.

Supplemental information:

How Are Earthquake Magnitudes Measured?
[link to www.geo.mtu.edu]

Another interesting read too...

Earthquake Magnitude Scale & Classes
[link to www.geo.mtu.edu]

This part is kind of funny...

Earthquake Magnitude Scale

Magnitude Earthquake Effects Estimated Number
Each Year
2.5 or less Usually not felt, but can be recorded by seismograph. 900,000 a year
2.5 to 5.4 Often felt, but only causes minor damage. 30,000 a year
5.5 to 6.0 Slight damage to buildings and other structures. 500 a year
6.1 to 6.9 May cause a lot of damage in very populated areas. 100 a year
7.0 to 7.9 Major earthquake. Serious damage. 20 a year
8.0 or greater Great earthquake. Can totally destroy communities near the epicenter. One every 5 to 10 years
 Quoting: Michigan Tech

chuckle

This year may be set to break that 'record'.

For each .1 in magnitude, doesn't the strength of the quake double? And the energy released is 3X as much, I think.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1183343

Earthquakes are logarithmic and each .1 is a 1000x times strong than the previous. So in simple terms a 5.1 is 1000x stronger than a 5.0
 Quoting: Children of the Atom

How do we know if it's a foreshock?
Only if there are no aftershocks soon,is that right?
 Quoting: igCorcaigh

Yes, that's a good sign it's a foreshock. It's been 40 minutes and not one small quake has hit since the 7.6. Aftershocks usually hit very soon after the initial quake and then decline in frequency and magnitude.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 926633

will you morons STOP spreading that bullshit?! it's always dumbshits who have no idea about how quakes work spreading bullshit around. just because there is no aftershock immediately does NOT mean it is a foreshock. there is nothing at all saying an aftershock has to occur within minutes or hours. got the stupidity on here never ceases to amaze!

GET SAVED: Thread: Are you SAVED from DAMNATION?

"For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another." -- Galatians 5:14-26

Re: 7.9+ Mag Earthquake near Acapulco, Mexico - DEVELOPING
Here's what I can find:

The equation to determine the probability that an earthquake occurring near a major fault will be a foreshock to a mainshock on that fault is modified to include the case of aftershocks to a previous earthquake occurring near the fault. The addition of aftershocks to the background seismicity makes its less probable that an earthquake will be a foreshock, because nonforeshocks have become more common. As the aftershocks decay with time, the probability that an earthquake will be a foreshock increases. However, fault interactions between the first mainshock and the major fault can increase the long-term probability of a characteristic earthquake on that fault, which will, in turn, increase the probability that an event is a foreshock, compensating for the decrease caused by the aftershocks.
