Get a wolf hybrid... They are mean as all fuck. They will kill other dogs that come onto their property. Badass mofo's right there...

Guinea fowl or geese either will not let you within 100yrds without sounding off.

What you don't want is a dog that attacks we were trained to take care of those quickly. Small dogs are great because they go off and you can't catch them.

I acquired my SHTF dogs last year. I got a Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff) and a Bull Mastiff. The Cane is very intimidating, almost demon/gargoyle like. She makes the neighbors shit themselves when they see her walking down the street.

Rhodesian Ridgeback. Bred to hunt Lion. The only purebred dog from Africa. Smart, can anticipate your next move ( or anyone's or anything's), attack is more viscous than a pit, in fact they tell you specifically to NOT train these dogs as they have pure instinct that will kick in naturally.

Also, if they can take down the top of the animal kingdom and are that loyal...?? Great with kids too !
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10743136

We had four adult rhodesian ridgebacks when I was growing up, then the one had 13 puppies. I loved them. BUT while they are good with kids, they are not good with smaller children, though you should always be cautious with ANY dog around babies obviously. Our rhodesian bit my head when I was a year old! Hahah, but we loved those dogs.

I could also suggest a presa canario. We had one of those too. Good family dog, but also very very protective. I can't tell you the number of people who were afraid to come to our door because they seen her barking at them from the backyard. She was such a sweet dog though. We had to put her down because she caught rabies, then we got two pups, but it was too much to handle at the time. I want another so badly.

I worked for a guard dog company for quite some time,
German Sheps are bad ass, but I have seen Rottweilers EAT DOORS,
THEY ARE SCARY, I have seen career guard dog people run like hell from them, u need a Rotty, good luck finding one that is not inbred and messed up in the hips, you want recent European bloodlines, they ain't cheap.
Forget the German Sheps and Pit Bulls, they are toast as a breed, the Germans have been selling their SECONDS to US police departments for 30 years,US German sheps are trash.
Rottweiler.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12619789

One time I was looking to buy a house, a fixer-upper. There was a Rottweiler chained in the back yard of this house I was checking out. I wanted to check out the back yard but didn't like the look of the dog. As I was leaving, a neighborhood kid came by and ask me if I wanted to see the back yard. I said, sure, but that dog is in the back yard. He said he had known the dog since it was a puppy and that "widow" was a good girl. So I followed him into the back yard. The dog wasn't barking, it was just looking at us. He walked right up to the dog and said "hi girl". The dog lunged at him and bit his calf muscle, tore a piece right off. I ran like crazy out of there, and he followed me. We got to the street and he said "whew, that was close." I said, "Close? Look at your leg!" He looked down and passed out. I called 911 and once the ambulance got there I took off. So I am kinda traumatized against Rotts.

What is the best SHTF guard dog breed? I have a decent amount of preps but obviously I can't stay awake 24/7. I have a small dog, but I think I bigger dog would buy me more time during an invasion of some sort. I don't think I want a pitbull or rott. (Seen a rott ripped someone's calf muscle off their leg in front of me.) I am thinking mastiff maybe? I had an Akita at one time but it would bite my mom when I wasn't looking, sneaky bitch, literally. Opinions?

Re: Best SHTF Guard Dog Breed?
remember-you have to feed these 100+ plus pound beasts-the bigger they are the more prone to hip problems and have a shorter lifespan. Don`t take my word on it-google these breeds yourself.Special Forces,Israeli IDF and Mossad, even the Chinese military use Malinois-why question success?.You would take the word of retards on a doom forum over reality?.Everyone is in love with whatever breed they own.Check it out for yourself.
 Quoting: grh2008

Feeding a 100-pound plus animal is greatest while they are puppies and if indeed you yourself looked up the Anatolian Shepherd Dog you would notice that it is an ancient breed that certainly was not pampered.

The breed does best on a balanced diet and mine loves beans, vegetables and the first thing he eats off his plate is his cottage cheese and he is a healthy dog.

Further, you would have learned that the breed lifespan is between 12-15 years and although hip dysphasia does occur, it is not a prevalent disease in the breed.

Anatolian Shepherd Dog
Lifespan About 12-15 years
Health Problems: Hip dysphasia does occur, but is not as common as some other large breeds.

My parents have a farm and they have a Anatolian Shepherd guarding the cows. He is pretty darn big. He lives in the pasture with the herd.
 Quoting: Albino Rhino

Mine does not have an outdoor flock to watch over instead he has our indoor cats that he fusses over and if not taken on hikes would be content to lie down and just be watchful. Therefore, weather permitting he wears, a lightly filled backpack since his growth plates are still open the contents consists of a bowl and two small water bottles and we take a hike.

suggestion OP...sometimes ex gueard dogs are adopted out after their offiCal jobs....with a puppy you just dont know what the dogs personality will be like when it matures...if you want something that will protect you(attack when told if need be) you need to train it to stop before your start to teach it to attack. That can take quite a while, especially if youve no experience with training, let alone training guard/protection dogs, maybe adopting a dog that knows the drill and just need you to learn the ropes would be good....i agree about Rottys...i still think a crossbreed though.

Wow, hearing a lot of good things about Rhodesian Ridgeback. Anybody know the best place to get one in NorthEast Texas area?
 Quoting: Albino Rhino

You might try adopting one at Ridgeback Rescue, each state has this org. You can almost get one for free, only thing I don't like about theirs is they castrate them or so I understand. Or just Google Rhodesian RidgeBack Breeders in Texas. Luck Bro!

The most healthy dogs are the ones that most resemble the wolf.

So I would pick the German Shepherd everytime.

I had other races before and I they all had health problems. I'm done with that.

when you feed your dog $20-44lb bag of food from wally-world...
need to spend 40 or more a bag and they shit half and eat half as much so it's really cheaper in the long run.
you get what you pay for in dog food.

Re: Best SHTF Guard Dog Breed?
Well I have a Husky/Lab mix, she is awesome. I also have a Coy/Collie mix, a lab/pit mix, a pure bred lab, and my pure lab and husky mix had a litter, we kept one. They always let us know if someone is nearby and if there is something we should be alerted about. I think if you had any large breed dog that is loyal. There shouldn't be an issue. My dogs won't let strangers near me. They are cautious and always on high alert. I happen to love collies, I LOVE their intelligence and just how easy it is to communicate to them. Now my Coy mix is by far the most intelligient of our dogs here. She is very loyal, I have a hard time playing with the other dogs because she is highly protective of me.

I feel safe with any and all the dogs we have here. You would ideally want a smart dog, easily trainable, large breed. LOYAL!!!!! Your pack, your family. Dogs protect there own, and their territory. It's nature.
In this world you have the sheep and you have the wolves. Than there are the sheepdogs who protect the sheep from the wolves.

Belgian Malinois and German Shepherds are some of popular dogs used for military working dogs so I recommend those.

You miss understand the sentence "bred to hunt lion". They like other "hunting dogs" do not take lions down by themselves, they simply find them bark at them and keep them busy until they are shot by the hunter. I am not saying Rhodesian Ridgbacks are not awesome dogs and I think they would be good for a SHTF situation but if you think they kill lions you are mistaken, They are not fighting dogs they are hunting dogs (not to say they cannot hold there own). I think a better choice would be a CAO Central Asian Ovtcharka, Kangal, or a Šarplaninac. Those 3 dogs are my personal opinion but I have dealt with them before and own a Kangal (so I may be slightly biased) and they extremely dangerous dogs, not a family pet and not to be toyed with. They are reliably able to guard and even kill wolves and can much easier take care of a human being. peace

German Shepherd. Hands down. Rottweiler is 2nd.

I'd get a shepherd but they shed like a beast. Next time you see a friendly one lift up their lips to look at their teeth and enjoy! Brains + natural instinct + power + training = what you're looking for.

Can't say that about my big sissy Dane. She acts like Astro off of the Jetsons. Ruh-roh!

they can fight. they will defend you to the end. they are small so litte food requirement, and better stealth. very well behaved.

these dogs make larger dogs cower in fear.

Also, you just would not know what the fuck hit you if there was a little dog ripping at your face.

but treat them well if you get one. they become very attatched to you.
