The US have always donated considerable amounts of money to Egypt each year since thirty years. This has been the key to keep them as allies of US/Israel instead of being a potential ennemy. During Mubarak's reign, these donations even managed to set up Egypt as an intermediary in the US relations with the other arab countries in order to prevent any resistance against Israel.

As a matter of fact, most of the "hardcore" members of the Muslim Brotherhood mobilized to force the government to refuse the US donations.
