Free Energy Nitinol Heat Machines invented in the early 1970's

What is Nitinol?

Nitinol belongs to a class of materials called Shaped Memory Alloys (SMA). SMA's have interesting mechanical properties. Nitinol for example, contracts when heated, which is the opposite of what standard metals do when heated which is expand. Not only does this alloy contract, but does so with a 100 times greater thermal movement (expansion-contraction) than standard metals.

Another interesting property of SMA's is called the Shaped Memory Effect (SME). The alloy can be made to remember a particular shape. Once a shape has been remembered, the alloy may be bent out of shape. Then returned to its original shape by heating the alloy about it transition temperature.

The force generated when the wire is reverting is surprisingly strong. One square inch of Nitinol material generates a shape returning force of + 30,000 PSI.

Extract from above article:

"...I now use air as the cooling medium (heat sink), deforming nitinol wires in pure linear tension (rather than the coil or loop configuration) and letting them shrink back to their original length in solar-heated water. This uses energy much more efficiently, even if it does not make a machine that runs "like clockwork."

"I have finally reached the stage where I "know" my efforts will be recognized by commercial success. Early applications are likely to be in the area of on-site power production for such purposes as agricultural water pumping, but it is possible to envision (in detail) engines producing many hundreds of horsepower for applications ranging from refrigeration to primary power production."

Yes its surprisingly cheap...I notice it only appears to be in thin wire shapes. If it was available as sheets for example that might be even better.

It's not "free energy" though, is it? You need a temperature difference to make it work.

The bottom line is, how efficient is it in converting the temperature difference into work, into useable energy? If it's less than other methods, it's not going to be a success.

Yes, it would seem that someone(s)'= slammed the lid down tight on this bit of tech. I do remember hearing briefly about a new type of thermistor back then, but had no idea it was this powerful. And in those days info was not so easy to access.
As his vision slowly cleared, the traveler came to the startling realization that he had been sitting by the side of the road, repeatedly hitting himself in the head with his walking staff. He had in fact been doing this for a quarter of a century.

Shaking his head at his own folly, he dusted himself off, set his gaze upon the road up the mountain and once more set off upon his journey.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I was referring to the materials potential use in large scale power generation applications. And the lack of mainstream coverage of that application.

I work at a medical device manufacturer. We've used nitinol a number of times, truly amazing stuff.

It actually is available in thin sheets (I've worked with 0.030 thick), but that's where it starts to get really pricey. 16pcs of 0.030 x 2" x 4" was around $1800.00 if memory serves me well.

Oh the drawback to this stuff? It's really difficult to machine by standard processes. Though EDM or waterjet machine it very well (also pricey)

80% is impressive; don’t forget how inefficient electricity is, it loses 60% of its power in in just transmission from point to point. Long as you’re heating the water by solar means it's a darn good idea.

Watch the first vid from the 70’s; they state if they can make the Nitnol for less than 200 bucks a pound it is feasible. We’re looking at 10 bucks a pound or less 30+ years later.

Free doesn’t mean the cost of building it if free, it means you don’t have to buy fuel like coal or gas. The sun comes out, the machine spins.

The one thing I do have an issue with is how hard it is to heat up water with solar means, but it can be done. Water transfers heat 7 times faster than the air.

Think I’ll make a toy one for fun; it won't cost more than 50 bucks.

Because there isn't a practical way to use Nitinol in power generation. Despite all the claims, it's probably going to be less efficient than current designs using steam, turbines etc.

Running a small wheel on a bench is one thing, scaling it up to power station levels is something else entirely...

not mean this idea will work using a big fan to turn a large generator. Now lets get back to the TV...
