There is nothing wrong with being self sufficient. I learned these things at home at an early age.

Home Economics. They do this in the US as well. You have to make it to Jr. High to take the course though.

I took it in jr high, homeck? er something like that. I got to eat everything I made and had all chics in my class. easiest elective you can do along with the "perks" just sayin.

same in NZ in the 80's sewing and cooking was compulsory for all students up until age 13, whats wrong with learning some basic cooking?

its about bloody time ! But it is up to the parents to teach their son how to do these basic things for themselves and be responsible and self sufficient in life.

I wanted to do woodwork at skewl but the male teachers got hysterical about having a female in the class, I could never walk through that skewl block again without getting filthy looks from them.

This should be taught in the home. Knowing ettiquite, for example, is an indication of your upbringing. Putting this in schools is fucking ridiculous and a waste of time. I mean, what the fuck do parents do these days? They must be responsible for some of their childs upbringing.

ALL students should learn the basic from cooking to changing a tire. Boys still have to eat and girls still have to get our tires changed.

Everyone had to take all of those home ec. courses in my high school, too. This was back in the 1980's. No big deal. So you know how to cook a meal for when you are living on your own...saves money. So you learn how to sew a button, rather than waste money on a tailor to do something so simple for you. And every man should know how to iron a shirt, especially if he wants to look good in the business world. It's not like it's a hard thing to do. Takes a minute, and you don't look like a slob for your job interview, or business meeting.

Now, that's a good point because they weren't as good about making us learn that stuff. We actually had required shop class in middle school, but not in high school. Fortunately, I learned all the handy-man stuff from my grandfather, so I can do most basic things like that. My dad never learned. My roommate is totally hopeless with that stuff, never learned because he grew up rich. The other day I replaced the light fixture in our kitchen. That I could do such a simple thing was amazing to him.
