Suddenly had the urge to quit alcohol !!
I've enjoyed alcohol for 24 years now. When I was younger I'd get be silly with it and get drunk but as I matured I would simply enjoy a glass or two of wine or a beer on a summers day etc etc.

Never really thought of any health implications or worried much about my intake.

Anyway, on the 17th March as I sipped the last of my Merlot I thought about getting in some other types of wine the next day ready for the arrival of my In-Laws from America next month..

I woke on the 18th and suddenly felt an overwhelming urge while in the alcohol aisle to give up. The next day (Monday) I still felt the same... I asked my husband if he wanted me to get him some beer for that evening as he was having friends round and to my shock he said "I don't fancy any if you don't"

HE LOVES his beer and would have a couple of cans every night!!...

Anyway, we haven't touched a drop since and have no urge to. We had a BBQ on Sunday and we drank juice!! This is unheard of for us as we would usually have a few beers and I'd share wine with my friend.. she had the wine to herself and even she was puzzled why I didn't fancy any.

I don't know if my 'vibe' influenced him or not but we haven't been discussing giving up much... maybe last year before my op we said we should cut down but it seems odd that we have both suddenly simply lost the desire.

Anyone else have this happen?

Another thing... since giving up I have noticed that my usual 4 hour a night sleep is more like 6 hours a night... I'm still shocked about that as I haven't slept longer than 4 hours a night for YEARS!

Good on you - my Dad and stepmother used to drink 2 bottles of wine an evening, and it wasn't until I said something did they do something about it. Although I got pure anger at first, they've both started running etc now and now they're running a marathon next month ... madness.

They still drink on occasion, but not even weekly/bi-weekly now.

It's horrid stuff.

Weed > Alcohol.

Both aren't good when taken to excess.
The former in my opinion is muuuuch more sociable / pleasant.

neither do we!

We weren't alchies but we certainly weren't healthy i guess... It's like a switch was flicked and we both thought... "Nah... no more"

Plus it's uber expensive, even a few beers and a bottle of wine is £10 at the cheapest.. £10 I could use on my children.

I gave up smoking 8 years ago.. also suddenly, just put the packet in the rubbish and never smoked again.

Well done you for giving up and choosing a healthy lifestyle!

Really? Some people are saying it was the budget that prompted me but it wasn't .. it was just a sudden "Why the hell am I consuming this rubbish all the time?" moment.. that THING inside me that says "Mmmm I'd love a cold glass of wine right now" was killed somehow.

the only reason I think it's weird is that my husband also hasn't had any... and he simply wouldn't entertain any 'giving up' previously.

It's like we've been hypnotised!! lol ... (we haven't)

Re: Suddenly had the urge to quit alcohol !!
OP, I have a great affinity for alcohol...usually. However rarely drink because I live with family and it's obscene to get drunk all the time like that...

Recently, I have no interest in drinking...the last drinks I truly enjoyed were in New Orleans...and my upper quadrants of my stomach revolted so bad I thought I was going to die (not enough alcohol for poisoning, and not GERD or heartburn...it's some Sphincter of Oddi issue due to gallbladder surgery in the past).

I think that might explain why I'm so much less interested in alcohol. I've had 1 very small unfiltered bottle of sake and 3 glasses of wine and 2 martinis in the last 2.5 months.

I haven't had anything in the last 3 weeks.

'They' say that if you can make it to day 31 without alcohol your liver completely regenerates in 30 days (ish)

that's if you haven't any scarring and don't eat / drink other liver abusing substances.

So I guess I am looking towards the 18th April for my 'new liver' day..... I also plan to take Milk Thistle from next Monday (didn't want to flush the liver too soon in case it makes me crave)

As for the mental damage it may or may not cause Omega 3's are good for that and I take them anyway so that's good.

As baffled as I am to the sudden lack in interest for wine I am incredibly happy and looking forward to having more money, more sleep and less BLAH feelings in my head after a 'razz night'...

I quit last year just cold turkey even if I was never a drinker. I would have a beer here and there or a glass of wine a few times a year. All of a sudden my body just 'said' no more alcohol. And since then I've only had 3 beers and 2 non-alcoholic beers and no other alcohol whatsoever.

You life will now begin. It is the best thing anyone can do for themselves or their loved ones. Good Luck and if you fall off the wagon. Pick youself up and get right back on. Life without alcohol is LIFE. I should know.

Peace and major Propz for what you are doing.

BTW: Cold Turkey is the Best way. Sux for about a month, then after that, its all good. Try drinking Soda's that burn to give your body that sensation, and get some kind of mild sleeping pill. You wont sleep well at first. I think alot of us start drinking to sleep anyway. Not all, but alot. Give me a shout out. I'll be your GLP Sponser/Designated Driver so to speak.

Re: Suddenly had the urge to quit alcohol !!
Alcohol is one of the worst and most dangerous things that is, for some reason, entirely legal. It doesn't take much for people to become addicted to it and it completely ruins them.

Alcohol destroys your muscle tissue and it affects the brain in often permanent ways. Long time heavy drinkers have a diminished cognitive capacity which is entirely noticeable to even the most common person. Excessive alcohol intake can, and will, lead to death.

One of the most dangerous aspects of alcohol, especially to an addict, is that alcohol detox can, and has often been, quite deadly. Most alcoholics are unable to detox themselves ("go cold turkey") simply because they can easily die from it. Alcohol detox is generally done in a hospital under close medical supervision. It can be so bad, in fact, that many alcoholics are simply sedated for days on end until the worst has passed.

The dangers of alcohol detox far exceed that of meth, heroine and cocaine usage.

The "hang over" which is most commonly associated with alcohol is your body detoxing form only one day's excessive usage.

Many people don't realize that the intoxicated feeling associated with alcohol consumption comes from the fact that it is poison. This is why it gradually impairs all of your faculties and causes your body to reject it in the form of vomiting. If one were to continue drinking past the point of extreme inebriation they can very easily die from alcohol poisoning.

The vast majority of the population only consumes alcohol on an irregular basis. Others will consume small quantities on a regular basis. There is not much wrong with extremely moderate consumption of alcohol but the same can be said for many things.

My mother died from alcohol and her mother nearly did as well. I will still have a beer every once in a while, especially with German food, and will enjoy about one bottle of mead a year.

The problem is that there is a very fine line between enjoyment and dependance and once you realize you have crossed it, it may be too late to simply stop.

Thank you :o)

I hope that we can get through this... we were drinking more than most people. It was just a habit to pop the cork on a bottle of wine every evening... a BAD habit.

I've done a week... I have confidence in my determination to make this permanent.

not sure I could have just 'one' glass though... I am sure once that amazing taste hits my tongue I would down the bottle... so I best stay away from it entirely! lol

Staying off of something is where sublimation comes into play. To put it as simply as possible, it's taking all of that energy and effort you would have put into drinking and/or worrying about not drinking, and putting it into something useful.

If you keep your mind and body busy you won't think about not drinking. Eventually you will find a variety of things that you enjoy doing more than drinking and you will rather do those things than spending hours slowly poisoning yourself.

If you've done a week a then you can do a month! Just take it one day at a time.

I would give up on the cola too as well. Or at least just drink it occasionally. That stuff's pretty harsh on your body too. Too much processed and artificial ingredients in it. I drink, but I'm only 21. I'm trying to slow down on it though. You turn legal drinking age and just rip into the booze. I was beginning to impulsively have 2-3 beers after I would tell myself to have just 1, and this would be on like a Monday night. Trying to just keep to drinking on the weekends. Good for you for giving it up though. To each their own. I don't plan on ever quitting drinking, but applaud others who make that decision. I swear alcohol is in the human DNA ever since it was first consumed thousands of years ago, if not more.
