Andrew Jackson User ID: 13091835 United States 03/28/2012 08:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Microsoft Raids Tackle Internet Crime Quoting: cRoSS FiRe Microsoft employees, accompanied by United States marshals, raided two nondescript office buildings in Pennsylvania and Illinois on Friday, aiming to disrupt one of the most pernicious forms of online crime today — botnets, or groups of computers that help harvest bank account passwords and other personal information from millions of other computers. With a warrant in hand from a federal judge authorizing the sweep, the Microsoft lawyers and technical personnel gathered evidence and deactivated Web servers ostensibly used by criminals in a scheme to infect computers and steal personal data. At the same time, Microsoft seized control of hundreds of Web addresses that it says were used as part of the same scheme. The sweep was part of a civil suit brought by Microsoft in its increasingly aggressive campaign to take the lead in combating such crimes, rather than waiting for law enforcement agencies to act. The company’s targets were equipment used to control the botnets, which criminals, known as bot-herders, use for ill intent. In each case, Microsoft obtained court orders that permitted it to seize Web addresses and computers associated with the botnets without first notifying the owners of the property. The secrecy was necessary, Microsoft argued, to prevent criminals from re-establishing new communications links to their infected computers. Mr. Perlotto and Microsoft said they did not see civil legal action against people who commit online crime as a replacement for law enforcement action, which can result in much stiffer criminal penalties. “We equate this to a neighborhood watch,” Mr. Boscovich said. More @ link: [link to www.nytimes.com] Is what it is folks, these Corporations have huge money on the line,a and that money talks in Washington. If ya are breaking the Law online, enter at own risk, ya got to assume everything ya do it watched and logged. Ya may download a movie or software now, and three years from now get slapped with a lawsuit. The risk/reword ratio says, it's just not worth it anymore. It sure was fun while it lasted, we got to stick it to the man. This battle is not worth fighting, protecting free speech online, and freedom of communication, privacy, things of this nature are where any energy should be spent. Corporations and Governance are linked, it's lose lose any way we cut it. We don't really want to pay Government employs to understand how to dismantle Bot Nets and other scams when privet Co's like Micro$oft have a vested interest in doing it already. They, unlike Government have the people whom understand these systems on payroll. It's not somebody's brother-in-law making the calls on systems that could bring communications of the free World to a standstill for days. Fascism on one side, Socialism on the other. Don't make self a target. “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight. Cease to do evil, Learn to do good;Seek justice, Reprove the ruthless,Defend the orphan,Plead for the widow. Your Governance is puppet whore of the Banks, it is not a real boy. This was the next logical step in dealing with the criminals. They rip off UBER amounts of data and many times sabotage company servers. Crackdown long overdue. Greenseed User ID: 11052596 Canada 03/28/2012 08:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | the OP post is missleading. a Bot-Net first purpose is not to steal data from personal computer but to use those computers as a tool for our greater purpose like: brute-force , file server, enormous bandwidth usage for anything they like, ddos some route and a lot more. The point is into one irc channel you can order command to tons of computers at the exact same time. So now that say , why Microsoft will be unhappy to see a bot-net very secure from the outside attacking Microsoft server and product, making them look like fools, there is no surprise there. A bot-net gave the owner REAL POWER in this virtual space. What ever all bot-net is a threat to the giant corp of this world. It is exactly like having a big group of protester acting all together in the same time. Yes it true that some bot will stole your personal info , activate microphone, webcam without you to know and they are using rootkit to make sure anti-virus, firewall can't stop them, but they are biggest threat for big corp then us , only a very small % really stole your personal information, what they want is a STABLE bot to work for them. Microsoft competence let me think that the bot-net was in fact a HoneyPot setup by a much much bigger bot-net ;) thats the way your bring the bear where you want too :) |

You can't exactly send in SWAT to in cutting cables willy nilly. There's more to it than that. But at the same time, wouldn't FBI or another agency have its own specialists that could have done the job? |

Cyber space is a blind black box that so many people know so little about that it never occurs to them that criminals both individual and corporate may be watching them for nefarious purposes. Doubling down, the feds and the corporation that gave the feds a keyhole into the lives of innocent civilians cooperate on secret warrants to seize and spy all without most end-users ever becoming aware of a thing. [link to www.nytimes.com] I'm a little confused. How did bot-nets cause "damages" to Microsoft Corporation? Each person that was infected was "damaged" and could sue but Microsoft? Don't get me wrong I don't miss bot-nets but I'm just wondering how that works? Are they arguing that you really never own your copy of Windows but are just licensed? By infecting their copies of windows on thousands of PCs your "damaging" them? Jack of all trades master of none "shall not be infringed."
