NSA Chief Denies, Denies, Denies Wired’s Domestic Spying Story

NSA chief General Keith Alexander faced tough — and funny — questions from Congress Tuesday stemming from Wired’s story on the NSA’s capabalities and warrantless wiretapping program.

Congressman Hank Johnson, a Georgia Democrat, asked Alexander whether the NSA could, at the direction of Dick Cheney, identify people who sent e-mails making fun of his inability to hunt in order to waterboard them.

Alexander said “No,” adding that the “NSA does not have the ability to do that in the United States.” Elaborating, Alexander added: “We don’t have the technical insights in the United States. In other words, you have to have [...] some way of doing that either by going to a service provider with a warrant or you have to be collecting in that area. We’re not authorized to do that, nor do we have the equipment in the United States to collect that kind of information.”

That statement seemingly contradicts James Bamford’s story, The NSA Is Building the Country’s Biggest Spy Center (Watch What You Say), as well as stories from The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, USA Today and Wired, which collectively drew a picture of the NSA’s post-9/11 foray into wiretapping the nation’s telecommunication’s infrastructure to spy on Americans without getting warrants.

You know, I got a letter from my kids school advising us that they were having some sort of drill this week as well. Now where is that darn letter?

This is unimaginable to me.

Homeschooling is terrorism.

Just like paying cash for your coffee and donut.

So, let me see if I have this right. If there were a real emergency, they will bus your kids away and then you won't have any idea how to get to them? Emergeny = we take your kids away?

Damn. All we had was "duck and cover".

I think the school desks back then were like nuclear bomb proof or something.

This needs to be taken seriously. I have 3 boys - ages 8, 5 and 1, and am SERIOUSLY considering homeschooling more and more lately.....going to decide for sure soon, so that I can start in the fall.

...and so is having more than a week's worth of food on-hand.

I just called my kids school and they said they are having a "code red" drill and will not be removing them from the school. I asked the principal if she heard of anyone doing this "removal of students" drill and she said "We are not doing that in our school. And again I said, "But have you heard anything about this?" and she said "We are not doing this in our district.." Can't she just say yes or no? She was very vague on giving me info if this drill even existed.

The more I take a look at the WHOLE picture, the more I am beginning to believe that they know something we don't. As if they are preparing for a catastrophic event.

What an exciting and educational experience! I never had that as a child. These drills are a wonderful way to impress young Americans with a deep awe and amazement at the power of Government. Lucky kiddos!

Thinking outside the box - this might partcialy be to find out which parents ask 'unamerican' questions - like you did...

Inbedding a fear of terrorism into the culture of the next adults.
