Unusual Event Reported at North Anna Nuclear Power Plant Resulting from 3.1 Mag Aftershock Felt in Control Room
Unusual event reported at North Anna resulting from aftershock felt in control room

Since the 5.8-magnitude earthquake last August 23rd in Virginia, there has been a rash of aftershocks in excess of magnitude 2.0.

The North Anna Nuclear Power Station sits about 11 miles from the epicenter of the 5.8 mag quake near Mineral, VA.

A shallow (7.8 km depth) 3.1 magnitude aftershock from last summer’s 5.8 mag earthquake occurred at 11:21 p.m. EDT on Sunday March 25th, This aftershock was centered 13 km (8 miles) south southwest of Mineral, VA.

The aftershock caused a reported magnitude 3.1 seismic event near the North Anna Nuclear Power Station that was felt in the station's control room.

After the tremor was felt in the control room, the Unit 1 reactor at the station declared an “Unusual Event” and submitted a report.

No damage was discovered in an inspection that was conducted after the aftershock. Therefore, five hours after the event the Unusual Event notification was terminated.

Still, a plant inspection is ongoing to determine any plant issues related to the seismic event.

Questions that linger include the following:

Why, if no damage was discovered after the aftershock was felt at the nuclear power station is there an ongoing inspection to determine any plant issues that are related to the seismic event?

Did any news stations run a story on this Unusual Event that occurred at the North Anna Nuclear Power Station?

Given that the aftershock occurred late evening on Sunday the 25th, why was the Unusual Event (event report) not registered on the RSOE EDIS website until today (Tuesday, March 27th) at 03:30 a.m. UTC?

Why, exactly, is the 3.1 mag earthquake that was centered south southwest of Mineral, VA being assumed to be an aftershock of the 5.8 mag earthquake that occurred in Virginia last summer?

Why isn't the 3.1 mag earthquake of March 25th being considered as a foreshock of a stronger earthquake that has yet to hit the area?

I am not sure but it could be nothing , didn't the same thing happen last year during the 5.8 quake in Virginia. I can't find the thread. But you could be on to something.bump for further info .5 stars.

The North Anna Nuclear Generating Station, located 40 miles north west of Richmond, lies within the Central Virginia Seismic Zone.

According to a local Virginia media station, WHSV, "The two North Anna reactors are among 27 in the eastern and central U.S. that may need upgrades because those plants are more likely to get hit with an earthquake larger than the one on which their design was based.

During the construction of the nuclear reactors at North Anna, the utility learned of the existence of fault lines within the construction site of the proposed plants from its outside independent engineering firm, Stone & Webster, who had been hired by the utility to access the proposed nuclear plant locations.

The utility was fined $32,000.00 by the government for concealing this information.

According to a report published on the Huffington Post, a 1977 Justice Department memo "..focused on how the power company and federal regulatory officials went to efforts to not make public the knowledge of geologic faulting at North Anna. "[V]irtually the entire Office of Regulation of the [Nuclear Regulator Commission was] ...well aware of the fault and determined not to take any immediate action," according to the memo.

A government attorney, Bradford Whitman, did not recommend prosecution at the time, but the power company was eventually fined $32,500 for making false statements during the licensing process, according to the DOJ memo.

Dominion, the major shareholder of North Anna Nuclear generating Station, publicly stated that on-site, spent-nuclear-fuel long-term storage canisters shifted during the earthquake along with various building cracks, but maintained that such damage does not represent unsafe operating conditions.

As of December 20, 2011, both units at North Anna Nuclear Power Generating Station restarted and have been operating at full power.
