@astro: So provide a link to nasa that explain this, NOT image only. We still have the images here.

Otherwise just save your BS as always.

It's not BS, I just showed you that it is indeed the earth. It doesn't matter whether NASA talks about it or not, I do not accept your arbitrary goalpost, my analysis is more than sufficient, as is TBar's. Here's the TLE data for SDO, you can load it into any standard program that can display the orbital relationship of satellites to the earth and sun and it will show you the same thing:
SDO

Yes, you have images, so do I. I proved it was the earth, so did TBar, end of story.

Yes, that's the moon. The moon has no atmosphere to speak of, so it shows a sharp edge when viewed against the sun.

 Quoting: DUCM900

They've described the phenomenon in general, yes, but they don't announce every eclipse that happens, they happen all the time. Earth eclipses happen during eclipse season near the equinoxes. We're at the tail end of the current eclipse season right now.

"Twice a year, SDO enters an eclipse season where the spacecraft slips behind Earth for up to 72 minutes a day. Unlike the crisp shadow one sees on the sun during a lunar eclipse, Earth's shadow has a variegated edge due to its atmosphere, which blocks the sun light to different degrees depending on its density. Also, light from brighter spots on the sun may make it through, which is why some solar features extend low into Earth's shadow."

I predict it will end by the 30th! Yes, wait and see...

Time: 3:35

 Quoting: TBar1984

I just did an updated Crystal Ball viewing! My Updated Prediction is that in the Morning, you will possibly only see a slight dimming of the right edge of the Sun. For the most part, it will be free from the darkness that has plagued it. However...beginning Sept 8th, 2012 at 07:09 UTC the Sun will again be plagued with moments of Darkness! Yes! The Sun Plague will return 9/8/12 and last for WEEKS! I'm tellin' you the truth guys...

Those numbers must mean something, check it out 9/8/12.

We are Doomed!

groucho

BTW, don't look here [link to sdoisgo.blogspot.com] those guys don't know what they are talking about. My Crystal Ball knows more...

And so why you did not post the link before when asked from nasa? However just one image desc. in years of activity? hmmmmm

However, IMHO this is a fake image, look for example the flare at the bottom:

 Quoting: DUCM900

Because your arbitrary goalpost is worthless and I do not accept it. It is entirely possible to determine the cause of the eclipse without NASA spoonfeeding you the answer. Both TBar and myself explained it and showed you that it was earth.
However just one image desc. in years of activity? hmmmmm
 Quoting: Duc

Oh look, you're moving the goalposts. This is partly why I didn't comply with your demand to begin with, because I knew you would do this. Let me spell it out for you loud and clear; it's not up to NASA to predict and announce every single eclipse or even eclipse season. It's completely predictable without their help. I figured it out for myself, TBar figured it out for himself, anyone with any amount of astronomy knowledge can figure it out for themselves and verify that it's the correct answer.
However, IMHO this is a fake image, look for example the flare at the bottom:

[link to www.nasa.gov]
 Quoting: duc

No, it's not a fake image, as explicity stated by NASA, the very people YOU demanded to hear from, "light from brighter spots on the sun may make it through, which is why some solar features extend low into Earth's shadow." The edge of the earth against the sun is created by earth's atmosphere, brighter features of the sun can occasionally be seen through the atmosphere. You demonstrate once again a complete ignorance of the situation.

Astro and TBAr I am a fan of the works both of you do. I can accept that it is the Earth but can you explain why the arc of the shadow is the wrong way for an eclipse? Is it just the size of the Earth and its proximity to the camera? If so, I still don't understand why the curve goes the wrong way!

interesting. twice today my sat nav said the sun had set, when it was just gone noon, and very much up there, shining bright as fuck, then i come home and see a thread like this.

hmmm

btw, that is the first time in over 8 years of owning this sat nav it has said this. lol

most probably nothing to do with this thread, but I thought I'd mention it.

the funny thing was, when she said it, I actually looked up at the sun. lol

First, thank you for the kind words. To answer your question, the issue is that you're seeing the edge of earth's atmosphere, not earth's physical surface. Brighter regions and features of the sun can show through more of the atmosphere than dimmer features:
[link to farm6.static.flickr.com]
Likewise, limb darkening can cause the edge of the sun to shine through the atmosphere less well than the center of the sun (you can even see how this causes the above flickr image to appear to be slightly bent "the wrong way"):
[link to en.wikipedia.org]
This effect is being exaggerated by the automatic contrast adjustment that's going on in these images. See this sequence and notice how the sun's far left side gets brighter in the final picture of the sequence on the right.
[link to www.thesuntoday.org]
The contrast being applied to the image appears to be changing in response to the changing amount of light left available due to the earth's shadow. It can also be even further exaggerated when areas of the corona near the limb are not as bright as near the center, effectively doubling down on the limb darkening.

Actually, it could be something to do with eclipse season; all geostationary satellites experience eclipse season, and during that time is also when the satellites pass in front of the sun from the earth's perspective. During the time when it is in front of the sun it can be very difficult or impossible for the satellites to communicate with your dish. Not sure why it would say the sun had "set," I would expect it to something more like "sun interference" or something.

So have you been well brainwashed now? also some shills are afferming that the moon is chasing the sun because its recent dynamic illumination phenomena, (started with ninor frequence almost since the last 4 years only); so now for those people, it's became normal to see everytime and everyday, the moon upside down and upside up on nothern hemisphere rotating itself too for several degrees on random mode too...

in a way i do have to agree with you here..
but i do take astromut's explanations serious as well, atleast it sounds like a plausible explanation..

yet, i also am of the opinion that this still could be sometihng else.. yes density of atmosphere or lack of will create visibly different shadows but the direction of the shadow arc should pretty much be the same...

i seriously don't know whats going on out there but i'm not the full 100% convinced about all the info that has been given... i.e different edges of the shadow, different arc's of the shadow, some pics it shows like it really close to the camera etc..
