Just in: Elderly Couple Abandon Home after Spike Lee Re-Tweet (Update - Apology Issued)
Elderly couple abandon their home after address is posted on Twitter as that of George Zimmerman

A school-cafeteria lunch lady and her husband have received hate mail, unwanted visits from reporters and fearful inquiries from neighbors — all because their Sanford-area address is being disseminated on Twitter as belonging to Trayvon Martin shooter George Zimmerman, her son said late Tuesday.

The woman, 70, who has a heart condition, and her husband, 72, have temporarily moved to a hotel to avoid the spotlight and possible danger, said son Chip Humble of Longwood.

The woman has another son named William George Zimmerman who lived with her in 1995 and still lives in Central Florida. He is no relation to George Zimmerman, 28, who killed 17-year-old Trayvon Feb. 26, sparking national outrage and international interest.

According to a report late last night, Lee apologized yesterday.

Lee wrote:

I Deeply Apologize To The McClain Family For Retweeting Their Address. It Was A Mistake. Please Leave The McClain's In Peace. Justice In Court

[link to news.yahoo.com]

The "mis-tweet" was first reported on 3/25. The apology is reported to have been tweeted yesterday, 3/28.

The Sentinel article has been UPDATED as of 3/29 to say the apology was issued Wednesday.

The son (mistaken for shooter Zimmerman) attempted to straighten things out, and this is what he got for his efforts:

Zimmerman traced the tweets — which he said have been retweeted by actor-director Spike Lee — to a man in California. Zimmerman has implored the man to stop and said he received this response, "Black power all day. No justice, no peace" and an obscenity.

I do not even know where to begin on how irresponsible it is to tweet an address. Even if it was the correct address, Spike Lee is putting the lives of innocent family members & neighbors in jeopardy, not to mention the life of a man who has NOT been proven guilty of anything & could die at the hands of a lynch mob.
Life is karma and karma always reflects both past and present circumstance. Our time here is short, so choose carefully and behave well, for all of your tomorrows are presently being decided.

What bothers me most is that the mob wasn't called off.

I've seen nothing in the news to indicate that the person that initiated it (and Lee re-tweeted), retracted the information.

From what I see in my second post, people are beyond caring about doing what's right.

Grr this makes me so angry! Not only should he be forced to pay for their moving expenses and a nice new big house for them (and any medical bills they incur from this stress), but he should face criminal charges for libel and for putting endangering their lives. And how about inciting violence? God I hope this irresponsible POS get whats coming to him. Being rich and famous should not mean he is above the law!

It didn't originate with him, but he definitely played a big role in making sure it made its rounds.

The original tweet was sent to Lee (and numerous other celebrities like Will Smith, 50 Cent, and LeBron James) last Friday afternoon by Marcus Davonne Higgins, a 33-year-old Los Angeles man who uses the online handle “maccapone.” Higgins included the direction, “EVERYBODY REPOST THIS.”

They would have to file a civil suit to recover expenses.

As for why the folks that tweeted the address are not at least being investigated? Look at the names. Enough said.

Tell them to stop wearing t-shirts and looking white.

That's some sick shit. Also exposes what this is really about; they're trying to start a race war, they want to piss people off until there's violence in the streets. The racist bastards don't care that it's the wrong address, that only makes it even more effective as an agitation tool.
