Re: Help required: Natural methods to cure slipped disc.
See a good chiropractor. Even my doc recommended it for me.
The doc in question was a spinal specialist.

Find a chiropractor and a massage therapist that works for you, eat a really healthy diet and once you start to feel better, get moving!

Take it from someone who destroyed two discs lifting something the wrong way.

Hi Madame X.
Thank you for your advice :-). He has been seeing a chiropractor and various masseuse for 2 years now. How long was it before you had results ?

Sorry to say, I still suffer, I am just more protective of my back now so it's less frequent.

When I start to feel back pain, I stop doing what is causing it and put on a brace, then head to the chiropractor.

It literally was years before I went without pain on a daily basis.

Weight control is key as is exercise once the initial swelling and pain is gone. Gotta keep those joints lubricated.

Hope it helps, there has been lots of good info passed on in this thread. If you take the ones that work for you and apply them, it will become tolerable.

Good luck.

Thank you, its good to know what is a realistic goal for my friend. I have learned a lot myself about back pain on this thread and I really hope my friend can use some of this advice to help him move forward. I think just getting to a point when he can bend over and pick up his three year old son again would be a massive achievement, I hate to see that he is unable to do precious things such as that. The fact that he is a really nice person, good at heart hurts me more. I appreciate everyone's input on this thread, no advice that you guys have given will go to waste. Much appreciation and much love to you all.

Op, re fasting/ detoxing

it depends on how much effort your friend can put into it, and what his tolerance for going without food is

starting off by eliminating sugars/starches and chemicals as in this diet is a good start:

[link to naturalcandidacleansing.com]

Re detoxification: [link to life.gaiam.com]

Re fasting, I've done quite a few, but the easiest one I've done is the Master Cleanse, also known as the lemonade fast. The last time I did it for 40 days, and felt awesome

[link to themastercleanse.org]

or google "lemon cleanse fast"

all the information you need is on the web, also on youtube

Re the anti-candida diet (which is basically the alkaline system diet), here's a good check list:

[link to www.emperorsherbologist.com]

re eliminating toxins out of the body, I posted a number of things on a thread about reversing cancer without chemotherapy

There were some good suggestions on this thread:

Thread: Need Help Fighting Cancer For a Freind

Now, here's a video, but be aware that many multi-level marketing style scams have latched onto this topic, and all will try to sell your friend something

don't be turned off by the MLMs, just don't waste your money
Realize you can do all of this at home, cheap

This is a decent explaination for why you want to normalize the body's acidity levels (and yes, acidity will affect inflamation, which in turn is helping cause spinal pain)

Merci bien! Very glad to help

:D

I've acquired this knowledge through years of research, also from parents who were yogis and pursued an alternative lifestyle

I've also wasted considerable time and money on things which don't work, so if I can save anyone some time from not making the same mistakes, it makes me feel perhaps the mistakes served a purpose

be well!

This suggestion is more for the lower back, so I hope I did not miss your point. There are certain stretches you can do in your bed that stretch the spine and create a sort of vacuum for the disc to pull back into place. One involves lying on your stomach with a pillow under your belly. You hold the top of your mattress firmly with your toes tucked under the bottom of the mattress as best you can. To create the stretch, you VERY gently and VERY slowly curl your toes upward into the mattress, toward your knee, while firmly holding the top of the mattress. Trust me, do NOT do it quickly or the sudden pain is almost unbearable. Doing it correctly, you will feel a gentle tug in your spine. Hold it for a count of about 5, then SLOWLY release the tension and rest for about 5-10 seconds. Repeat it about 10 times right before bed. The other stretch is to carefully put your leg on the bed or something higher (kitchen counter if your wife/spouse won't slap you). The point is to stretch the leg without bending your back. The combination of these two stretches led to a dramatic improvement in my unbearable pain. I pray your friend finds relief and complete healing. Oh, and I now stand as much as I can. It has helped immensely to avoid sitting for long periods. Walking is even better, as it helps strengthen the "core" muscles that support the back.

Re: Help required: Natural methods to cure slipped disc.
In continuation, the inversion machine is for those who are capable.

It will pull the spine out.

I hanged from my arms and legs to help facilitate this process for me.

But I am capable of gymnastic maneuvers so this is normal for me.

The pulling from the hands by hanging and the feet, help, when the spine is ready for it. Although, if there is pain from pressure or compression, and a person can get up, walk around and perform motions without incurring instability or further inflammation, that may help.

It's a fine line between though, no one can really know for sure unless they're there feeling and seeing the spine and how the body reacts to pressure at various points.

Stretching is a big part of it, for both the posture, including the legs and arms, as well as expanding and allowing everything to blow up, and then shrink back down and fall into place.

Although, why did it happen? This is a sign of that, not the other way around.

So for aids, I dealt mostly with herbs you can rub on, something like this :
[link to maxcdn.nexternal.com]

Again, I was young, so I was able to heal.

So I was going to say that mind power has a lot to do with it. Visualization, meditation, staying calm ( the back muscles seize and tighten around the points of pain otherwise), resting and eating properly, detoxing and fasting and staying at a healthy level of exercise and flexibility.

Anti-inflammatory may help with the swelling, although that doesn't mean one can get up and walk around .

The body must both create as well as suck back in that fluid into the disc. It feels like stiff jelly.

Oh the universe is so beautiful to build us up a body so complex, durable and interactive.

I can't really think much in terms of foods or medicines. I simply knew I had to reduce the pressure and that food increases the pressure for the most part.

On top of that, detoxing puts a tax on the systems healing abilities.

So it may be for after.

BUT

Healing can be accelerated all over the body with proper nutrition and the removal of toxicity.

So things like cleaning the colon (you'd be surprised the amount of pressure it puts) with a heavy fiber diet and then the heavy slippery elm or other laxitive along with Benton clay at some point.

Water fasting to shrink and help the body relax and focus on what is has to.

The removal of any toxins that are not helping and the things that stress the body into the postures and tensity levels that cause injuries like this.

It's almost a game of that, just lying and get so relaxed you're almost asleep or maybe that your body won't move. The body then takes over.

I can't tell you for certain, but these should be vague guidelines as to how to naturally relax, and allow your body to heal.

It's not too much, or it's not too magical.

Part of it is, mind, nutrient, etc.

The rest is literally the physicality of having a circular device, with jelly inside, and another circular device on top or bottom and then attaching that to a body with organ pressure on one side, and then limiting the range of motion vertically and compressing it all.

Jelly smooshes out if it's too much, and so pulling the spine back out and up to stretch the head and feet, and then lying and allowing the body to reabsorb the jelly and seal the disc back up.

It may be that I am not similar as you or others, and that I used meditation and visualization, not prayer, but emotional projection, to help myself heal, rest for days and reduce motion and stress to a minimum.

The fasting was one of the most important parts, the organs shrink and the spine is more freer. Then the pain was literally a point that was projecting, I pulled it in. Or allowed my body to by not introducing a state or motion that reduced it's ability to do that.

Some claim this will help with a slipped disc - it's continuous passive motion, to relax muscles and relieve pressure between vertebrae.

These are the kind of simple, posture adjustment exercises I was mentioning.

These are slightly more advanced, than basic though. But the basic is just a more relaxed version of these. Simply put.

For instance, the lying cat pose is pretty hard to do if your spine is not flexible and your upper body is not willing to hold the rest of the body up and flex.

So it may be something for a more healthy spine, than a herniated disc.

But lying there flat face to the right or left.

And tilting your head and neck back, as if you were going to do the first 2 inches of this pose.

That might give you restriction of movement, and from there, you could see what has to happen, or be changed to stop restricting the movement.

That restriction and point of pain is the injury. So not following through entirely with the movement, but seeing where you are by FAKING an attempt at it, literally lying there and inching in that direction, can tell you where the injury is and what motions can help, but again, the idea is to NOT cause any FURTHER injury, while still safely exploring and understanding the parameters of the spine/circumstances of the situation.

Thank you friend for sharing your exercise and experience. My friend has to sleep with a pillow under his legs already so this is something he could try before going to sleep. As for the kitchen counter, I think he'll have to do with the bedstead :-) Thank you friend.

Hi, thank you for expanding on this. Fasting and detoxification have been mentioned on this thread and I am glad to see it is working for you, I will be recommending my friend look into this lifestyle to help him along. You are absolutely right with this advise as I am looking to help him with natural methods. If he is able to stand this type of exercise I hope it will help him, but at the moment Im not sure if his back is strong enough to do this. It is definitely worth looking into given your recommendation though. Thank you Friend.

Re: Help required: Natural methods to cure slipped disc.
STOP! Don't get surgery!!! Doctors will make it worse in most cases!!! Your body can very likely fix it naturally. You can help. Jogging very slowly can help put it back in place. Sleeping on the floor (on a hard surface) for 2 or three nights can help. Doing back exercises - very specific kinds - helps. The back exercises that help are the kind where you sit on a machine and push backward with a resistance on the upper part of your back. When you get strong enough, lay on the floor on your back. Bend your knees so your feet are about a foot from your butt, now lift your back and put all your weight on the back of your head. Do that several times for up to ten seconds every other day. Do pushups where your hands are on dumb bells and slowly move them more and more forward (meaning, if the dumb bells are under your body, move them towards your head. At some point, they will be above your head, but on the ground of course). When you get to where they are a good foot or even two above your head, your back will be in awesome shape. Also, pull your knees to your head often. And, I stress - a slow jog helps.

I had a ruptured disc, and it was more painful than having a baby. The jelly between the disc had leaked out and hardened on my left sciatic nerve root.

I used muscle rub with camphor in it. The rub has to have camphor in it, as that is the pain and muscle reliever and healer.

Eventually the pain got so bad, I could not handle it. I ended up in the er. They gave me hydrocodone and made me an appointment for a mri.

After the mri, I went to see a neuro surgeon. He diagnosed me and set me up for surgery. I was ready, and the surgery was successful and not that bad. If I had to do it again, I would do the same.

If you are really against surgery, go to a doc...get some type of meds and go to pt. You have to do something...it is serious in alot of ways.

God bless you.

I tried everything including steriod epidural injections which I do not recommend by the way,....OUCH Just find one you can trust and actually listen to the exercises and stretchs, etc and put your life in their hand. Literally, it will take time and will not happen over night just be patient and good luck....

Re: Help required: Natural methods to cure slipped disc.
I applaud you OP for looking out for your friend. Most people who haven't been through back pain don't understand it.

Whatever you do, don't let him get depressed and become sedentary. His pain will only get worse.

The things that have helped me have mostly been mentioned already. Physical therapy, Chiropractic care, massage, diet, and weight loss all helped allow me to regain functionality.

The one thing that was kind of unconventional that helped was talking to a pain psychologist.

I still have pain, but I can run and lift weights again without being debilitated the next day.

I wish your friend good luck OP

Re: Help required: Natural methods to cure slipped disc.
How old are you male or female?

Probably not a 'slipped disk' at all.

Drink more water! Could be dehydration.

Also, no treatment will help a poor nutrition bone condition if you continue to eat junk foods with no nutrition. You need to make drastic changes.

Re: Help required: Natural methods to cure slipped disc.
Once the disc gets to the nerve, "game over". I waited and tried everything, had insurance and surgery was always an option, waited a 1.5 yrs till I finally gave up. A week went by after I had surgery and the Dr. sat me down and told me how sorry he was, but since I waited for so long the expelled disc material rubbed and ground on the nerve for so long that the nerve was permently damaged, that being said I've lost around 30% of the feeling in my leg, but I feel way better after the discectomy, get it done ASAP and move on, not all western medicine is bad, and has it's place in our society, this is where balance in medicine should be approached.

Go to a Chiropractor. I have been going to one for several years now, to help ease the pain of my severe arthritus in my spine and in my joints.

He has been seeing a chiropractor, I am thinking he should also look into changing the person he goes to now.
Thank you my friend

OP,

You've been offered much advice here - but please don't do anything based on those who say definitive things like "do this" or "go there" . . . the reason being that, I'm sure you know this, everyone is so different and what works for one may not for another and vice-versa.

Also, and this is just my two cents worth, but please be careful about chiropractors - they can easily do a great deal of damage. While I am wholly skeptical of the entire AMA and pharma industries, chiropractic treatments are something I believe can be very reckless and potentially dangerous in the short- and/or long-term.

Re: Help required: Natural methods to cure slipped disc.
OP,

A lot depends on where its at. If it is herniated, but not compressing anything, odds are good your body will take care of it. If its on the nerve, thats different.

I have had back problems for yrs. all at L5/S1 that was compressing left S1 nerve root. Have had 2 surgeries, the first surgery they used x-close devices to close the disk. the last (1 yr later) was to fix a 9mm x 10mm x 17mm bulge (2 large fragments). 60 days later, its failed again...10mm x 14mm x 21mm is the new one. Fusion coming soon...half of the disk has already come out in these fragments. It is just a bad disk. Some days are worse than others, but its all good. I still do exercises that i picked up at PT, sitting for long periods is a no go.

Stay positive, everyone is a little different. Find what works for you. Check out this site, it is great:

Re: Help required: Natural methods to cure slipped disc.
Does anyone know of any natural methods ( except an operation ) to help cure a slipped disc ? I know someone who has had this problem ongoing for two years now. It's been life-changing, a real handicap. They have tried all sorts of massages, acupuncture, pilates and numerous exercises but nothing has helped.

Thanks in advance for help and advice.

Sorry to hear about the issue man..i know how it is..i have a slipped disc in my lower back. I got it back in the mid 90's when i was lifting a huge subwoofer box from the back hatch of my car ..it had 4 12inch subwoofers..i was in my early 20's then and i was pretty strong and in shape..figured i could lift it out since i was the one that lifted it into the hatch..

As i was lifting the sub box out of the back hatch..i heard like a tear or rip sound and sensation in my lower back..but felt no immediate pain at all..so i just continued on and got the sub box out of the back hatch.

The following morning while laying in bed..i felt fine until i tried moving my leg and i felt a strong sharp pain run all the way from my right foot up to my back..i tried getting out of bed and couldnt. I finally got up out of bed by leaning on my bed rail and dresser...i could barely move my right leg and my back kept wanting to collapse on its own. Some times the back would flair up ..other days it was perfectly fine..strange...anyways i finally made a doctor's appointment and got a CAT Scan i believe it was..maybe it was a different kind of scan but my back was scanned and they found the slip disc.

The doctors wanted to fuse my back disc via back surgery..i refused and took the steroid options....they stuck a needle about 1` foot long into my back and sprayed my spine and lower back with steroids..it worked! but i had to come back every year for a shot..The shot was weird though..it immediately makes you throw up..the nurse put a container in front of me in the first shot i got..she said trust me..you WILL throw up when the doctor inserts the needle and he begins to spray the steroids onto your lower back and spine..sure enough without fail..i up chucked lol..i cant describe the feeling of the shot onto my spine..it does not hurt but its one nasty feeling.

Long story short..i stopped getting my shots after a few years and while my back has flaired up once in a while..i am able to work fine ..the only problems i have now is in the morning..my back is stiff as a board lol..i can barely tie my shoe laces in morning but by noon..my back is loose and fine and i can tie my show laces fine after a few hours of getting my back worked out.

I do not know of any home remedies man...i know eventually my back will be giving me troubles once again..but its been over 15 years since i got that slipped disc...so far so good..knocks on wood!!

Re: Help required: Natural methods to cure slipped disc.
If it hasn't already been mentioned , an Inversion Machine works best . Around $200 cost and easy to use ,
 Quoting: 719 1953719

I've not heard of an Inversion machine, can you please tell me more. Thank you !
 Quoting: ~Magik~

This machine places your body in an upside down position, allowing the spine to elongate, seperating or opening up the spinal column. Since your head is quite heavy, the spine opens up, allowing for relief, as there is more room for the disks to get back into place. The pressure exerted on the disks will diminish with inversion, which should allow them an opportunity to 'unswell' for periods of time.

I have heard it is an excellent addition to pain management.

Just make certain your friend adopts a healthier lifestyle along with any therapy.
 Quoting: Esoteric Morgan

Thank you for clearing up the details on that mystery machine for me :-). This is another method of pain relief that my friend should look into. He is already into healthy living, pretty much always was. Sometimes I don't understand how a slipped disc can suddenly happen to a healthy young person like him ( it happened whilst he was cleaning his car ! ) I guess back problems can be random.
 Quoting: ~Magik~

I suffered from a herniated disc a couple of years ago. Lasted 3-4 month's! Tried a lot of different approches including chiro, but what finally fixed my back was the INVERSION TABLE.

I started out 1-2 mins twice a day and worked uo to 5-6 mins twice a day at only about 45deg. From not being able to get out of bed or put on socks to 100%,took about 4 weeks. I also avoided sitting for extended periods and walking 20 mins aday.

Hope this helps!
