Every so often I'll come home to the overwhelming smell of oranges and then it seemingly disipates. There is absolutely no source of the smell, it's very odd. I've heard of phantom smells created by ghosts. Has anyone heard of this before? My house if very old (built in the 1800's).1dunno1

Yup, ghosts definitely can leave smells behind them, good or bad. The good ones are frequently flowery scents, but certainly oranges could be one. If nothing is happening, I wouldn't worry about it, just enjoy the scent. You might try to find a local medium or psychic who can give you some info, but don't give them a lot of money to rid you of the "ghost". Anyone who wants to charge you for burning candles, or doing some stupid ritual is usually a scam artist who is full of shit.

Most of the time though, I think the explanation is more of this world. You should check if anyone in the house uses any orange scented products, especially cleaners or floor products. there might very well be a natural explanation that simply is not obvious. I would consider that first, especially if you're not having any other phenomena.
 Quoting: mehitable

Trust me. I've considered EVERY and ALL logical explanations possible. But, as I stated, the scent is not artificial (like that used in cleaning products). And if this were the case, I'd smell it more frequently. I don't think it would spontaneously arise and then, just as suddenly, disapear. And there has been other phenomena. Whatever it is, it's not malicious I suppose. I've lived here 5 years and Mr.Orange has never done me any harm.

One of the trademark characteristics of a haunting is a smell associated with the presence of the haunting entity.

'k so now what? I'm not about to talk to the guy uhoh
 Quoting: Barry_Soetoro

If you don't want to talk to "the guy" then you could track down a REPUTABLE evp specialist.

I don't blame you, either. We didn't want to "talk" to any of the sh!t that is in our house either.

We have had the man that is considered 'ground zero' for evp in our house. It is really pretty impressive.

Some people find evp disturbing. It was completely validating for us.

I do not generally recommend paranormal investigative groups because none of it is really science and we have even had a group out here that is very, very closely affiliated with a certain, ahem, well-known group on television.

You learn alot about the reality behind reality television.

Anyway, after going through two years of sudden onset paranormal activity I recommend a reputable evp specialist.

Re: Do Ghosts Leave Behind Smells? Why does my house smell like oranges? Sombody???
OP here is an authentic evp. It is the moment that changed my family’s life. My 13 year old daughter captured it on her ipod. It has been studied by the official six Catholic exorcists in North America and at least one cardinal and several bishops along with the 3 top evp experts in the U.S.
It was recorded in Jan. 2010. My daughter had recently begun to menstruate (that is a potential pre-cursor to paranormal activity in a house).
We had recently begun a round of significant renovations to an orginal (famous) architect-built home from the 1950s. Renovation and construction are another precursor.
Our life became a living hell from this moment on until the formal exorcism of our property in June 2011 according to the Old Rite.
At the time of the evp capture my daughter was 13 years old. She weighed maybe 80 pounds soaking wet. She did not own any hard-sole shoes. She either wore Teva flip/flops or Merrill soft-soled slip on shoes.
She was and continues to be a “high honors” A/B student primarily homeschooled who takes science/math/foreign language at the local middle school.
Our life was incredibly normal for a happy well-adjusted upper middle-class family. I am a stay at home mom who homeschools. My husband is a prominent corporate attorney in the Northeast who has not ever lost a case in his 18+ year legal career. No debt. No stress. 4 luxury/vintage cars in the garage.
I had a trophy life until this recording. Then our life was a nightmare. We ended up vacating our home for almost one month in 2010.
Our daughter had been telling us for several days prior to this recording that “something is in the house” and that “something” was “saying my name” and “poking me in the arm to wake me up”. She reported items being dragged off her desk and nighttable.
It’s not that we didn’t believe her. We just didn’t know what to make of what she was saying. She is a painfully honest person but we just figured she was dreaming or something.
At the time of this recording my husband was out of state for a trial. My daughter was home alone because my son and I ran to the local library.
She explained to the cardinal that she was alone in my sitting room upstairs sitting on my chaise lounge drawing (she is an accomplished artist who by the age of 12 had been exhibited locally and in [in the major city near us] and had won awards) when the footstep started nearby in her bedroom.
She told him it was ‘a man” who was walking around. He would stop every once in a while as if he was looking around at something. Then he would start walking around on the hardwood floors again. This went on for maybe 5 minutes or so before she remembered she had her ipod and her ipod could record. She gingerly made her way to the doorway and pushed record.

The attached is what she capture maybe 20 feet away from where she stood.
She never heard the creepy exhale at the end of the recording. That is the “evp” piece because she could clearly hear the footsteps around her.

I am not techy and just figured out how to convert an mp3 from an ipod to youtube. The real recording as it appears on the ipod begins at :09 seconds. We were told by the evp experts that the “popping” or “crackling” sound is an indicator that an evp is about to take place. Where it is a bit obvious that something is going on with the ipod that is my daughter panicking that “it” has come near the doorway of her room (and thereby near her) and her palms are sweating and the ipod begins to slip from her hand but she retains control of it because of the cord. She drags the cord/ipod back up through her fingers.

Re: Do Ghosts Leave Behind Smells? Why does my house smell like oranges? Sombody???
Dont listen to the nay Sayers. In the early 80s I worked as a corrections officer at a maximum security prison which contained a county jail. Occasionally I worked the county jail at night which had a small library of books for inmates. I lived at the time in a trailer home deep in Goochland county Va. One night while I was off work I was sitting in our living room with my then wife watching T.V. when for no apparent reason I smelled orange peel. I asked my wife if she smelled it. She at first said no then a few seconds later she said she did. My oldest daughter who was at the time about 3 was sleeping in her room the next door down the hall from the living room where we were. About 5 seconds after my wife smelled the orange scent...and it was very noticeable as if someone had squeezed an orange peel toward our face... my daughter woke screaming and crying. I ran to her room and picked her up to comfort her asking her what was wrong. She said there was an old man standing in her doorway with a candle and it scared her. Next night I worked county jail and picked a book on Spirits to browse between my rounds. I dont recall the name of the book but the index listed a section on Ghost scents. Sure enough Orange or Orange peel was listed. Ill never forget the little shiver I felt. I wish I could remember what I read about it. I wish Id have taken the book but never the less it was an eerie experience. I surely believe you.

I just posted the orange peel thing about my daughter and the book on ghost scents at the county jail. I meant to ask you about more details of any more experiences with ghost scents, particularly the orange smell but any others also as it has been a very interesting thing to me since it happened. If you care to you can email me. Thanks. Nado428@yahoo.com

Re: Do Ghosts Leave Behind Smells? Why does my house smell like oranges? Sombody???
We had a dog that lived to a very old age. Almost 20. For the last year of her life, she had tumors on her back. We had a special medical cream we put on those tumors. It had a very distinct smell. We had to put her to sleep, and we buried her on our property.
3 days later, it started. We would hear her in the kitchen, walking across the wood floor. We also would hear her running in the living room and down the hall. We had no other dog or cat then. We would smell the medicine we put on her from time to time for the next year. The smells and sounds quit when we got another dog. Honest truth.

I too have been smelling "oranges" off an on over the last month, sometimes when in bed, sometimes just throughout the day. And I, like you thought perhaps it was someone who passed away and they liked oranges? But I can think of no one and I don't even BUY oranges. So I have NO clue as to what this may be. That is why I googled it, to see if anyone else posted something about "phantom smells" as they call it. Years ago I used to smell "burnt" smells, like something was burning, but that passed, and hopefully, so will the oranges!!

I just recently read a news story that the Department of Water put too much acetic acid in the water. People were complaining of an orange smell and finally a boil water order was issued. forget which town that was.
Run some water into your sinks and see if the smell is more concentrated there.

My house occasionally smells extremely strongly of onions for no apparent reason. Also, the silly ghost radar app that I found for my phone does odd things sometimes...
It is, to me, sad how fast people forget the FOUNDATIONS of our fine country! This country was built by an armed population capable of fending for themselves, and will be lost by couches full of potato-sheeple riding their 52" HD-LEDTV's into the orwellian sunset. :(

I would prefer the smell of oranges than the smell of dead rotting flesh which is often a manifestation of something evil. Still, the spirit in your house does not need to hang around and should be moving on.

I have heard of this type of thing......one of my friends grandmother passed away during the summer months a few years ago.....my friend was at her kitchen table, working on the books for her small business....she suddenly smelled lavender, very strong!! it was her grandma's favorite fragrance.......

Few minutes later the phone rang, and it was her aunt, telling her that her grandma had passed away....when she asked her when, it was at the same time that she started noticing the fragrance......

I guess it's their way of letting us know they are passing.......cool2

Many years back while I was sitting in the reception area of a private hospital waiting to book in for some surgery I smelled roses, really powerful and beautiful perfume, but no person and no flowers were near bye me.

A few days later, after the op, I was in my hospital room with my mother and my son and we all three smelled the rose perfume again. It came suddenly and very powerfully in the room. My mother and son stepped outside the door into the hallway and said they could not smell it out there. I had no roses or any kind of flower in the room at the time.

Always remembered that.
