Do Ghosts Leave Behind Smells? Why does my house smell like oranges? Sombody???
Every so often I'll come home to the overwhelming smell of oranges and then it seemingly disipates. There is absolutely no source of the smell, it's very odd. I've heard of phantom smells created by ghosts. Has anyone heard of this before? My house if very old (built in the 1800's).1dunno1

lol the only time I've ever smelled it is when I come home after being away for a while. And others have smelled it, too. Thanks anyway, though!

We lived in a haunted house back in the 90's and one night, I woke up and the house smelled so sweet. I mean you could taste this sweet and I went into the kitchen to see if I could see anything on the counter that might be causing it. There wasn't anything. I have never in my life smelled something so sweet before. It was quite amazing. Only happened one time, though.

I know that "sweet".

and typically it is an extremely strong smell of rose, orange, lemon, or banana.

Took four Catholic priests and one Catholic exorcist flown in from the other side of the country to put them at rest.

Again, don't let people here tell you otherwise. And don't let anything in your home scare you.

P.S.

I don't know what your faith (if any) is but consider looking up the prayer of St. Gertrude for souls in Pergatory (or unrested souls) in case someone is trying to communicate they need help by leaving the smell.(meaning they are leaving the smell to get your attention).

Just a thought from someone who has been there. No intention to infringe upon your faith.

Whatever your faith is, seek out those remedies to help those along.

Just sayin'.

I know the smell you describe. It was in my grandmother/grandad's house. I loved it and have tried to locate it for decades.
Ghosts to carry fragrances or odors or smells. This same grandmother I mentioned would "waft" through our house every first day of summer, June 21st, with her lovely perfume which hadn't been available for many years. We'd look forward to "grannie's" annual visit. The time and the room she chose would vary, but it appeared mainly in the living room of the old home we lived in. She spent the last two years of her life living there. Nothing scary; just great memories.

I've heard ghost stories with phantom smells. A lost lorn madam's lavender perfume wafts the empty parlor, the pungent scent of a burning cigar from a murdered card dealer.

Re: Do Ghosts Leave Behind Smells? Why does my house smell like oranges? Sombody???
Spiritual encounters are associated with smells more often than not.

Visits of the Mother Mary (Virgin Mary) are often linked with the smell of roses.

However just because you smell oranges (or anything else for that matter) doesn't mean there is spirit activity.

I use an lemon based cleaner. Citric Acid cleans lots of stuff, especially wood real well, thus the lemon based products are used often, lemon oil is easier to extract than orange oil.

I leave the house for a day and come home and I pick up the faint scent of lemon. The reason being because my wood furniture have been cleaned with lemon based cleaners for a decade or so.

There are orange based cleaners that some people prefer.

Since your house is as old as it is, I can only assume there is hard wood or soft wood floors (under the linoleum, under that carpeting) and that previous owners have used orange based cleaners and waxes for decades, soaking those wood floors in orange for so long that when the house is shut up the orange fumes build up.

It passes because you get used to it. The smell is most likely still there, but you become accustomed to it. As with any scent, being around it you desensitize quickly.

Thank you, everyone, this is all very interesting, valuable information. hf I agree that something (or someone) is trying to get my attention. I don't believe it's a loved one, though. It's something tied to this house and I'm going to do some investigating this weekend. I will be back to give an update. Thanks, again. Blessings.

Throughout the five years I've lived here, I've tried to "logically explain" the strange sounds, eery feelings I sometimes get (like I'm not alone), and , YES, the orange smell. Thing is, it's not artificial like that used in cleaners. Wana hear something REALLY creepy? The "oranges" are centralized near what I've convinced myself is an old well which has been filled with rock and covered with plywood. It's located in my laundry room (which typically gives off a PUTRID odor). Like I said, my home was built in the 1800's. Actually, it wasn't a home at all, but the estate's carriage house. It was converted to a home in the 50's.

Yeah, I smelled Jasmine and also the strong overwhelming fruity flowering smell when Ive stepped out side and it was the dead of winter and no one else was around me. Id feel like I was being stared at and the feeling of eyes watching

After this I would be visited by a spirit or have profound dreams

Talk to them and welcome them. Ask them for a sign. and ask for the message they want to give you.

Did the "smells" ever linger longer than usual? Mr.Orange is still here. Not typical. He normally leaves within 5 minutes after I get home. GLP effect, maybe?

Yes ghosts do leave scents, my uncle when he died has always carried the scent of "heaven scent". My great grandmother leaves the scent of roses, and I have a friend that leaves her perfume smell. Interesting times we are in that is for sure. At least the orange is a pleasant scent.

Yup, ghosts definitely can leave smells behind them, good or bad. The good ones are frequently flowery scents, but certainly oranges could be one. If nothing is happening, I wouldn't worry about it, just enjoy the scent. You might try to find a local medium or psychic who can give you some info, but don't give them a lot of money to rid you of the "ghost". Anyone who wants to charge you for burning candles, or doing some stupid ritual is usually a scam artist who is full of shit.

Most of the time though, I think the explanation is more of this world. You should check if anyone in the house uses any orange scented products, especially cleaners or floor products. there might very well be a natural explanation that simply is not obvious. I would consider that first, especially if you're not having any other phenomena.
