A satellite view of the weather over the Pacific Ocean and the U.S. currently shows a strong low pressure system off the coast of California that due to a "broken" gulf stream could stall in its present position for months. Quoting: Biochemky Maybe a series of low pressure systems will bring a period of continuous rainfall -- as has occurred in the past -- but not just a single one that somehow gets stuck in one location. On most occasions when it's wetter than normal in Calif, that's due to the jet stream bringing low pressure systems farther south than normal and causing them to move almost horizontally west to east over Calif on a constant basis. That has been called the "pineapple express." As of right now, the 5-day 500 millibar chart doesn't show any low pressure system becoming stalled over the west coast, so I don't see signs of an ARKStorm: [ link to weather.unisys.com] Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6011559 Did you watch the video at the top of the first post? Here's a short satellite weather loop from the last 24 hours: [ link to www.weather.gov] Also, the jet stream being "broken" is a new development. We have no history on how this will affect us. But, what we do know is the jet stream is what moves the weather systems along their tracks and prevents them from stalling out over the same location. However, if the jet stream is broken, and scientists are claiming that it is, we are in unchartered territory.
