Ansar al-Sharia, an armed group affiliated with Al-Qaeda, said in a text message on Tuesday that the latest oil pipeline explosion was part of "a chain of attacks" planned in response to the U.S. strike. Al-Qaeda has strengthened its hold on southern areas of the Arabian Peninsula country, seizing several towns during the past year of protests against President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who left office in February 2012. Yemen's army shelled Al-Qaeda hideouts in the southern city of Zinjibar, one of the jihadists' major strongholds, killing six militants, a local official said on Monday. The official, speaking from the nearby town of Jaar where wounded militants and dead bodies from Zinjibar are usually taken, said that "a Somali group leader named Abu Bilal" was among those killed in the late Sunday assault. Witnesses and security services said that "dozens" of Somalians have been seen fighting in the ranks of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the local branch of the jihadist network. On February 23, the commander of the African Union forces in Mogadishu, Ugandan Major General Fred Mugisha, said that large numbers of Somalia's Al-Qaeda allied Shebab fighters -- close to collapse -- are fleeing the war-torn country for Yemen. Instead of flying for hours, the new drones will be able to stay in the air for months. Hadi is reportedly more willing to approve U.S. airstrikes than his predecessor and he continues to receive significant aid in return. “As the pace quickens and the targets expand,” the Los Angeles Times reports, “the distinction may be blurring between operations targeting militants who want to attack Americans and those aimed at fighters seeking to overthrow the Yemeni government.” [link to news.antiwar.com] |
