South Africa's oil imports from Iran surge defying US-led embargoes
South Africa has increased its crude imports from Iran to USD 364 million in February, up from zero in the previous month, firmly ignoring the US-led oil embargo on the Islamic Republic, an official report says.

South Africa’s Revenue Service revealed on Monday that the country imported 417,000 tons of Iranian crude in February, indicating a dramatic change of a declining trend seen since October, when the country last imported 467,000 tons of the commodity, according to Reuters.

In January, trade and customs figures showed that South Africa’s crude imports from Iran stood at zero, compared with a monthly average of USD 280 million last year.

The US and the European Union have imposed financial and oil sanctions against Iran since the beginning of 2012, in persisting efforts to halt the Islamic Republic's increasingly self-sufficient nuclear energy program.

Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama gave a green light last week to further sanctions against foreign banks and other financial institutions by or through which Iran’s oil is purchased.

He claimed that there is enough oil on the global market to ensure that the move will not trigger an oil shock affecting US consumers.

Iran has rejected the Western and Israeli allegations that its nuclear energy program involves non-civilian diversions, arguing that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has every right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

NEWSFLASH:

What's really going on is the US/EU doing their best to deny CHINA easy, cheap energy access. They want to bring China down through sky-high oil costs. This is really what the Middle East brouhaha is all about. And they're succeeding.

Makes sense. The middle east knows that Africa is its brother and they both understand that American colonization is occuring at a fast rate.

Tactically its sound.

Who cares? What do you want to bet that Iran had to sell it at <$20/barrel for them to buy it.

Re: South Africa's oil imports from Iran surge defying US-led embargoes
I think we are shooting ourselves in the foot on this issue. The US "exemptions" given to our "allies" concerning this issue are a joke and the world leaders know this and other countries are ignoring the sanctions by the US.

Think about it, the EU is in such financial trouble that they'll never get out of and the last thing they need is for the US to tell them, ask them, force them (pick one) to stop buying Iranian oil, because that will make the EU's economies go further into recession.

I like how we "exempted" a few of our allies, what a joke, this was just something the regime came up with, because they knew if the oil supply was cut off for our allies that things would spiral out of control in those countries. Just another lie by our government, but what's new?

Funny..if that were the case, we would not be paying $2 per litre of petrol/diesel in South Africa.

We do refine yeas, but how big we are on global scale, I dont exactly know.
We are the biggest producer of Coal refined PetroChemicals through SASOL.
Here is the kicker, SASOL procuded fuel(coal) costs even more than oil refined fuels. stupid yeah, but thats SA for ya.

Just remember that the fuel crises of the 70's was brought about by a 5% reduction in supply, so Mr O saying it will have no effect on world supply is utter bullshit. You want your war because it is the most profitable thing ever, not for any other reason.

clappa

Finally others get it; I've been posting this for a while, the kiddies ignore it. It's the Carter doctrine being used, not under defensive purpose, but to wage an agressive economic war against China.

But Iran now controls the price and isn't making "miscalculations".

Behind this theory is the idea that the American security establishment is somehow infallible.
