first before you decide that Preppers are crazy ~ link ~ The truth is that our "just in time" inventory and delivery systems leave us incredibly vulnerable to a nationwide disaster.

You see, it is very expensive to hold and store inventory, so most manufacturers and retailers rely on a continual flow of deliveries that are scheduled to arrive "just in time", and this significantly reduces their operating expenses.

This is considered to be good business practice for manufacturers and retailers, but it also means that if there was a major nationwide transportation disruption that our economic system would grind to a halt almost immediately.

Once store shelves are picked clean, they would not be able to be replenished until trucks could get back on the road. In the event of a major nationwide disaster, that could be quite a while.

So what could potentially cause a nationwide transportation shutdown?

[link to theeconomiccollapseblog.com]

Well, it is easy to imagine a lot of potential scenarios - a volcanic eruption, a historic earthquake, an EMP attack, a solar megastorm, a war, a major terror attack, an asteroid strike, a killer pandemic, mass rioting in U.S. cities, or even martial law.

If something caused the trucks to stop running, life in America would immediately start changing.

So exactly what would that look like?

A Timeline Showing the Deterioration of Major Industries Following a Truck Stoppage

The first 24 hours

• Delivery of medical supplies to the affected area will cease.
• Hospitals will run out of basic supplies such as syringes and catheters within hours. Radiopharmaceuticals will deteriorate and become unusable.
• Service stations will begin to run out of fuel.
• Manufacturers using just-in-time manufacturing will devebunnyponent shortages.
• U.S. mail and other package delivery will cease.

Within one day

• Food shortages will begin to develop.
• Automobile fuel availability and delivery will dwindle, leading to skyrocketing prices and long lines at the gas pumps.
• Without manufacturing components and trucks for product delivery,
assembly lines will shut down, putting thousands out of work.

Within two to three days

• Food shortages will escalate, especially in the face of hoarding and consumer panic.
• Supplies of essentials—such as bottled water, powdered milk, and
canned meat—at major retailers will disappear.
• ATMs will run out of cash and banks will be unable to process
transactions.
• Service stations will completely run out of fuel for autos and trucks.
• Garbage will start piling up in urban and suburban areas.
• Container ships will sit idle in ports and rail transport will be disrupted, eventually coming to a standstill.

Within a week

• Automobile travel will cease due to the lack of fuel. Without autos and busses, many people will not be able to get to work, shop for groceries, or access medical care.
• Hospitals will begin to exhaust oxygen supplies.

Within two weeks

• The nation’s clean water supply will begin to run dry.

I drove a truck for 31 years. The thing most people do not know is that the very food, the very clothing, the car they drive, the oil or coal that runs electric generating plants, the fancy bottled water you drink got there by truck.

Some magic president did not wave his wand and all of your consumables arrived at the store.

Nope some dumb assed red necked truck drive drove it there.

When and if you take the time to read the article and research a little further, you will be scared.

Re: Are you Ready, GLP? Bad times coming. Preppers right!
If you are in the transportation business, you have heard of the term “JIT Freight.” To those who are not familiar with the term it simply means “Just In Time.”

Just in time freight was created to cut costs for manufacturers. With this type of freight movement, the manufacturer does not need to worry about warehousing (or the costs associated with having a warehouse) nor do they have to worry about inventory costs because there is no inventory sitting around.

The idea of JIT works like this: a product is made – in order to make this one product there are several materials that are needed to make it and the materials are to arrive ‘just in time’. A lot of the automakers use JIT freight. A driver may pick up parts (say something like door handles) in the morning and he has to drive straight thru to the manufacturer because as soon as his appointment time arrives (or perhaps even when he arrives at the manufacturer) he is unloaded because they will need the freight he is hauling in order to manufacture whatever they are working on.

A lot of the manufacturers will charge a transportation company for arriving early to pick up a JIT load, very rarely do they like to load someone early, the same is true for the receiving end as well. Since they are shipping it to arrive ‘just in time’ to make a product – they do not want you early or late – they simply want you there Just In Time!

I was actually quite surprised to find that some people seem to think that this is what has caused a problem with our fuel situation

Thank you, Bunker Bill, for the posts.

I am prepped, as well as my tiny little mind can plan, but the thing I cannot adequately imagine is the chaos of the unprepared, when JIT bites them in the rear.

Thanks to your posts, I will ponder this at length and see what else I might do to prepare for when the vox populi screams in anguish and fright at government not providing for them in the event.

5 stars and good green karma for you, Sweetie!

Preppers are following the exact model that the most powerful nations used to gain their power -- fortify your defenses and go to any extreme necessary to gain superiority against anything that has even a remote chance at threatening their existence. Basic survival instinct. This shows that humans are still controlled by brutes that haven't transcended shit.

Most stories I post on GLP are of minor importance, but this is the one that affects each and every one of you should it happen.
And happen it will when the price of fuel drives most truckers to park their rigs.

When this does occur, do you expect your government to come to the rescue?

I imagine most people under the age of 40 think that the government is their friend. Well realize this, they are not your friend, but I guess it will be to late when most of you figure it out.

Your families and yourselves depend on JIT trucking practices to live. It only takes one snafu to fuck it all up and no more fresh food for awhile.

OP, I used to be in HR for a large trucking company that relied heavily on Qualcom satellite communications, but it seemed to me it more for motoring whereabouts. If that satellite connection was down for a substantial amount of time do you think that would be a significant enough snafu to wreak havoc? Are they now totally reliant on satellite communications from a logistical standpoint?

Only ONE little thing I disagree with.. I believe the gov't WILL "aid" the people ONLY IF they cow-tow to any demands (i.e. herding them to camps for "control", etc) And that won't be me! Uh uh!

Good question, but in and of itself, QualCom is really just so dispatchers can bug drivers.

Really, I don't think the QualCom system is of any relevance anymore due to cell phones.

Most drivers know that a little aluminum foil on the satellite receiver and viola QualCom no longer works.

What will hurt us is if and when truckers can not afford to run their trucks and just park them. When the starts to happen to more and more truckers it will drive prices up for everything you consume.

Like I said, you think times are bad now? Just wait.
