I grew up in Chicago and moved to a place a lot of people here love to hate, California. Ended up staying for work in L.A.., then back up to Santa Barbara to "escape" the city. Ended up living in an awesome cabin in a semi-tropical jungle at the base of the foothills about 1/2 mile from the ocean. Had a great garden, the ocean was clean there (as far as we knew) and there was seasonal streams that went through our property.

Had to leave and move for the last couple of years. I'm in the Phoenix area now and not happy about it. Because of the heat, gardening is extremely limited. There's no water (except for the damn golf courses) and nothing is produced here to sustain ANYONE. This area will be one of the first to fall into insanity.

I'm back to the mountains myself, soon. Back to a garden and if I'm lucky a well like I had in Wisconsin. The only worry there was the pump, and the well going dry.

I think the ocean water in parts of the central coast is (was) safe, to a point. It didn't smell, anyway. I don't think you can smell radiation though.

On side note: I've read a lot of your posts and you seem to have a pretty substantial knowledge of astronomy, astrology and all things energy related. I started studying Tai-Chi in the early 80's (from an asian master) and still do on my own and while not looking for it or trying, I just became extremely sensitive to the energy surrounding me, both from people and the environment. I can't even walk into a Walmart(!), and the land here Feels like it's saying it's not happy. It's a newer development on the edge of the desert. Something's telling me somethings coming to a point. Both with people and the earth. Do you think it's my imagination, or I'm reading to much (doom) here on GLP? Or am I really sensitive to the energy communicating something to me?

I read the first page, and havent read the other eight, but if it has been mentioned - its worth repeating ... what is scarier to me - than no food - is no drugs ... I used to deliver PDQs (pretty damn quick) to Walgreen's RXs ... and we're talking a covered pick up truck full - per day - besides their regularily scheduled deliveries of drugs each day ...

Just imagine the 80% of people who are taking some sort of pharma drugs DAILY (sometimes more than once a day) ALL GOING COLD TURKEY ! because their drugs havent been delivered

those psychotropic (happy pills) need to be gradually reduced, so you don't have a reaction like the guy at VA Tech ... just think of what it will be like with a 100 MILLION people flipped out - roaming the streets when they can't get their meds

You guys that are hooked on that krap better start weaning yourselves OFF of them NOW ... or you will become THE Problem, that there is no solution to other than death to others or yourself when you wig right out because you failed to learn how to master your emotions.

That is soooo true! We have become a nation of over medicated zombies! I don't pop pills, never did & don't go to the Dr. Personally, someone I love needs blood thinners due to a couple stents, so kinda hard to get around that one for the moment. Apparently it will not be for the rest of their life, but for the foreseeable future. :(

Agreed. That would explain the recent "Executive Order" which basically claims gubb'mint control over farms, gardens, livestock, and fresh water supplies.(As well as anything ELSE you have lying around which they may find "useful".)

Since FEMA has finally admitted that there ARE camps (one of the few things Glenn Beck has been mistaken about), I wonder if they will now make their locations public? If so, and if you can figure out if any of them are fairly nearby to where you are, I'd be ESPECIALLY careful and DILIGENT about hiding away whatever you can, because you will be first on the list for a little "friendly" visit. It would be logical, for control and distribution issues, for the gubb'mint to "corral" the majority of the population into centralized locations (i.e., FEMA camps) and, as in any successful livestock operation, they will need to be fed and watered.

Hi Harry! One of our loyal GLP'ers, TinyGreen, has a thread which has mushroomed to over 200 pages all about canning, preserving, etc. It has lots of "how to" videos embedded within too. Might be worth filing away alongside your survival series.

one thing thats a definate MUST. for those people that are keen on this concept...especially getting out into the woods etc...

TRY IT! try to camp in the scrub, try to use your flint and steel to light a fire, try to set snares and traps for game, try to make yourself a shelter, gather bush tucker, learn to shoot, fire a bow, use a slingshot, skin and cook food, ....whatever, but the biggest part is this...

WHat good is any of this prepping without KNOWING what to do, or how to use it?

Another thing id like to say is this...learn (or practice)to take notice of your surroundings. Learn to smell game/people (people can be smelt miles away, especially if they are wearing deoderant), learn to notice the subtle differences in the wind, weather, animal life around you (birds are a good indicator of someone approaching), learn to get out of your 'white man' way of looking....(white people tend to look straight ahead when walking through the bush, either in peaceful times, and in combat)...learn to 'scan' the bush, from left to right with your eyes, dont look for 'humans/animals', look for shape, tone, colour, movement, anything that doesnt belong, look behind you at intervals, learn to look up as well....

But don't forget mindset and psychology (of groups/mobs) figures into this too. You all KNEW that EVENTUALLY things would be set right. It's like that around where I live when we have a power outage (quite frequent during the winter). We all help each other and make sure that everyone has water, heat, food, etc. The longest was 10 days a couple of years ago. It's almost a bit of fun, "camping out" in your home. And when it's over we re-stock any supplies we've used.

BUT....what happens when people begin to realize that "help" is NOT coming? That it may be WEEKS if not MONTHS before things begin to get back to "normal"? That there will not be any "re-stocking" anytime soon? Panic and desperation will start to set in, and a "group" will morph into a "mob". And a panicked, desperate mob (which will be angry and envious of those who DID prepare) is an entirely different entity to deal with.

and (without trying to sound like a dirty old man)...Tampax ladies...spare reading/seeing glasses, clove oil for toothaches, spare strings for bows, fishing line, sewing kits....the list can go on...

And are the pumps (which move the water from the full dams to your tap) run by electricity? Would they still be operable if there were an EMP or some other long-term disruption of electrical power?

If you have a way to get fresh water you may be able to trade water for food. Where I live everyone has a well, but they are all run with electric pumps. When the power quits, so do our wells.

Have you read the book "As wind in dry grass"? A must read for all "preppers" and especially for ex-trucker preppers as the hero was one. Best fiction prepping/economic collapse/doom book I have ever read.

It won't even take "lead flying". Right before Christmas, the stupid OWSers shut down our Port here in Portland Oregon, (totally frustrating because it cost numerous people their day's pay as well as causing many department stores to run out of merchandise right before Christmas when they'd normally be making up for the dismal sales from the rest of the year) and all it took was enough bodies milling around waving signs. Most humans, including truckers, will not deliberately run down another human blocking their way.

It doesn't even need to be a huge number of people. Does anyone remember during the Rodney King riots a few years ago, a bunch of (melanin-enhanced) citizens surrounded an 18-wheeler and when the (melanin-challenged) driver naturally stopped, they beat him within an inch of his life, including pounding his skull numerous times with a brick?

And the gubb'mint's not registering bricks, at least not yet!

(Although I DO seem to remember reading a while back that somewhere they were discussing the actual numbering and registration of bricks on new construction so they could be traced back in the event of a riot where people might throw bricks. Probably didn't go anywhere. What would they do? Sue the original owner of the brick for damages after someone else pried it out of the wall? Silly idea, but it illustrates how the gubb'mints just LOVE regulation and revenue enhancement!)

All good advise. I guess what bothers me the most is the fact that most people today have lost the ability to think for themselves, especially the young folks. They're smart, they're educated but have to be taken by the hand and shown the way.

Example: This woman heard about how it was a good idea to have extra food on hand in case of an emergency. She had several months worth of canned goods but the only can opener she had was a electric one. The only way of heating her food was her electric range. She had a whole big shoe box of powered drink mixes, several cans of coffee and several boxes of tea bags but the only water she had was the city water supply out of the tap. She had a couple of flashlights and only four extra d-cell batteries.

She had the right idea but just didn't think it through. When I told her about these things, you could tell by the look on her face, she was taken totally by surprise.

Make plans. Make backup plans. Make backup plans for your backup plans. Just a little bit of thinking could save your life.

Sounds like the Obama campaign strategy!
