scientists also note that the Salton Sea represents the southern end of the San Andreas fault, and that a rupture along the southern section of the fault could produce the "Big One," and event well over magnitude 7.0 that has the potential to shake San Diego hard and to direct energy into the Inland Empire and Los Angeles County.

San Diego scientists are developing a program that will detect earthquakes about a minute before they hit, hopefully in enough time to give some warning to trains, hospitals and other warning systems, according to SDSU Geologist Pat Abbott.
Abbott said the next big earthquake that will hit California will likely be a magnitude of about 7.8 on the east side of the Salton Sea.

The Coachella Valley is a prime location for the convention, because with the San Andreas fault, many believe we're long overdue for an earthquake. "It really can happen at any moment, it'll start potentially at the Salton Sea and make its way northward," said Southern California Earthquake Center's Mark Benthien. "It could be up to a 7.8 or 8.0 earthquake and shake not only here, but all the way to Los Angeles."

This was posted September 2011 but this guy is also expecting 7.8 at least . The scientish from San Diego is also expecting about 7.8 ... hmmmm

I've watched this area since the 5 water main breaks thread this morning. It is unusual for that specific area to have an isolated swarm like this.

Interesting to see what tomorrow will bring.

The Great Southern California ShakeOut earthquake drill is based on a magnitude 7.8 scenario earthquake on the San Andreas fault in southern California. This portion of the San Andreas fault has been identified as the most likely source of a very large earthquake in California (Working Group on California Earthquake Probabilities). As part of the earthquake drill, computer simulations of the ground shaking from this scenario earthquake were constructed through a collaborative effort between the USGS and the Southern California Earthquake Center, which involved researchers from the USGS, URS Corporation, San Diego State University, and Carnegie Mellon University. These computer simulations capture the shaking at length scales larger than about 300 ft (100 m) and provide detailed pictures of the shaking for this scenario earthquake.

The magnitude 7.8 scenario earthquake ruptures 186 miles (300 km) of the San Andreas fault from Bombay Beach at the edge of the Salton Sea in the south to Lake Hughes northwest of Palmdale in the north. The final slip (offset across the fault) ranges from 6-23 ft (2-7 m). The colors in the movies indicate the peak intensity of the shaking up to the current time at each location. See Explanation of Colors for a more detailed description of the color scheme.

ELYSIAN PARK, Calif. (KABC) -- They call Thursday's earthquake drill "The Great Southern California ShakeOut." Scientists painted a chilling picture of what a 7.8-magnitude earthquake would look like. What's coming is a 7.8 earthquake centered near the Salton Sea.

I traveled down south to rescue a loved one
Who got caught up in the mess it left.

Ever since that dream, I'm always on alert

Japan have already acquired the earthquake warning system technology long ago. This warning system sends a text message to all Japanese enrolled, minutes before the earthquake strikes. I don't understand how come California of all places have not acquired this technology.

Honestly, i started coming at GLP because of an earthquake dream too couple months ago :)

I was driving near my office and entering a 10 freeway by the bridge when a sudden earthquake happened and a black out. The bridge fell and lots of people died but for some reason my car was on top of the bridge and i was able to survive. I jumped out of the car and the bridge and started walking home. Up to now, am still searching for the meaning of that dream. I had a lot of dreams that happened already so hopefully this one could have other meaning. :)

Little quakes do not relieve a thing, proven by most geologists that study quakes and tectonics. Little quakes just show new stress areas, and only represent the adjacent area that now has additional pressure.

Interesting.
In my dream it was evening by the time I
Collected my father and was driving out of
Southern California.

We stopped at an out of the way gas station
In some valley. Inside people were watching a
Tv mounted to the wall. It was showing coverage
Of the devastation left from the earthquake.
Everyone was quiet and in shock.

I still remember this dream as if it were yesterday.
It was a premonition dream. I have had a handful
And although far and few between, they all have come true.

Scary. I know a lot of people going out that way for the Coachella Music Festival this month.

It attracted over 200,000 people over 3 days last year. The attendance will be less because it's been split into 2 weekends, but that is still quite an influx of people possibly heading into harms way (if a great quake happens).

Quite the swarm going on. I wonder if there are any studies or patterns that show swarms before a big one?

If I recall before the Japan quake last year the Bonin Island region was swarming like crazy and not just little quakes they were measuring 5.0+ with great frequency.

But are these quakes unusual?

"The same week last year in Southern California we detected about 100 more small earthquakes than we did this year,” Funning said.

What fascinates and concerns scientists the most is the San Andreas Fault.

"The zone down from the Salton Sea, up to somewhere around the Cajon Pass has not had an earthquake in recorded human history," Funning said.

And as for small quakes easing pressure, Funning said no. Research suggests only quakes magnitude five or six can do that.

Small quakes are simply reminders that Southern California is always on the move.

Lol, wanna reality check?

The government will spend tens of million to make the one minute program available, the harsh reality is that it will take 14 minutes to get the first people notified to send the alert.....
