We already have common sense on when internet stalking and threats are real to warrant outside intervention and when its not. But this will embolder the newer generation to side with the a broader definition so the Government can step into the internet and control it. |

We’d all prefer that the internet was a more civil place. For every well-reasoned, considerate comment out there, there a dozen violent, all-caps homophobic rants. But it’s hard to do anything about it. Unfortunately, part of freedom of speech on the Internet seems to be the freedom of huge numbers of people to be jerks. Arizona, however, which doesn’t have the best reputation for protecting civil liberties, is doing something about it. The legislature recently passed House Bill 2549, which uses broad language that could turn a troublingly large swath of online chatter into a class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by up to 25 years in jail. It reads: “It is unlawful for any person, with intent to terrify, intimidate, threaten, harass, annoy or offend, to use any electronic or digital device and use any obscene, lewd or profane language or suggest any lewd or lascivious act, or threaten to inflict physical harm to the person or property of any person.” The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund argues that because the law is not limited to covering one-on-one communications, it could potentially open up the entire world of comments, forums, blog posts and more to criminal scrutiny. Gizmodo notes that because Reddit isn’t exactly a physical location, the law could become concerning to people outside of Arizona as well. [link to www.forbes.com] One day I fully expect blood to spill in the streets over all the crap being passed. People will only go along with a system so far then a last act will be unleashed and when that happens you better duck and cover. |

It isn't. Their goal is to catch everyone doing something, and if everyone isn't doing something, they'll make shit up. Did you really think we want those laws observed? said Dr. Ferris. We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with. ('Atlas Shrugged' 1957) {WMail Issue #23} |

Total freedom. Remember the AOL chat rooms? Youtube (created in 2005) was commercial free. Ebay (1995) in the early days too was awesome and Internet forums was explore at your own risk. It was a expression playground esp in the 90s It was like riding in the car and pick up trucks in the 70s without seat belts and playing outside not worrying about Pedos and not having to be politically correct. But now when big corps and regulation steps in, the 70s style net turned into something else. We will need to be ID'd and retina scanned and check out a contract before every log on now. Its coming up. |
