AT&T:
“We are reducing some jobs in the parts of our business that are declining, particularly wireline,” said AT&T spokesman Marty Richter. “In the last five years AT&T has lost more than 40 percent of its wired access lines — more than 27 million lines — as consumers increasingly disconnect their home wireline access and rely solely on wireless phones. This shift in our business is driving the shift in our employee base.”

- If more of us would buy what they're selling, they wouldn't have to move people out of those areas.

Yahoo:
"We are intensifying our efforts on our core businesses and redeploying resources to our most urgent priorities," Thompson said Wednesday in a statement. "Our goal is to get back to our core purpose – putting our users and advertisers first. And we are moving aggressively to achieve that goal."

- They started out strong and got cocky... hired too many people in too many areas, got owned by companies like Google, and now have to back off.

Lockheed Martin:
"We will make our best effort to help interested employees find employment elsewhere in the [c]orporation," said Lockheed spokeswoman Lindsay Wilson. "We also expect that many of the affected employees may have the opportunity for employment with the new contract holder."

- The contract expired and they lost the bid on the followup.

Dow Chemical:
“These actions, while difficult, are in full alignment with our commitment to continually manage our portfolio to adapt to changing and volatile economic conditions, as we are seeing particularly in Western Europe, and to preferentially invest in our fast-growing, technology-rich businesses” Dow CEO Andrew Liveris said in a statement.

- This isn't exclusive to the US.
