AT&T:
“We are reducing some jobs in the parts of our business that are declining, particularly wireline,” said AT&T spokesman Marty Richter. “In the last five years AT&T has lost more than 40 percent of its wired access lines — more than 27 million lines — as consumers increasingly disconnect their home wireline access and rely solely on wireless phones. This shift in our business is driving the shift in our employee base.”

- If more of us would buy what they're selling, they wouldn't have to move people out of those areas.

---

Yahoo:
"We are intensifying our efforts on our core businesses and redeploying resources to our most urgent priorities," Thompson said Wednesday in a statement. "Our goal is to get back to our core purpose – putting our users and advertisers first. And we are moving aggressively to achieve that goal."

- They started out strong and got cocky... hired too many people in too many areas, got owned by companies like Google, and now have to back off.

---

Lockheed Martin:
"We will make our best effort to help interested employees find employment elsewhere in the [c]orporation," said Lockheed spokeswoman Lindsay Wilson. "We also expect that many of the affected employees may have the opportunity for employment with the new contract holder."

- The contract expired and they lost the bid on the followup.

---

Dow Chemical:
“These actions, while difficult, are in full alignment with our commitment to continually manage our portfolio to adapt to changing and volatile economic conditions, as we are seeing particularly in Western Europe, and to preferentially invest in our fast-growing, technology-rich businesses” Dow CEO Andrew Liveris said in a statement.

- This isn't exclusive to the US.

---

See? All of these are practically mandatory business decisions. Sure some of these companies could keep the extra people around, but then they're just hurting their bottom line, their shareholders, and the future of the company (and all its employees) overall.

Great summary, and very true. I used to work for one of the companies in this list and they have been overdue to fire many people for years. No coordinated conspiracy here, imo. They are just doing what they have to do to survive.

+1

A lot of these layoff are in markets (AT&T) that were dead 10 years ago. I'm surprised they haven't been cut long ago.

Bottom line, you need to keep your skills upgraded to today's market demands. Just because you were a good assembly line worker 25 years ago doesnt mean the market needs that now. Tech is the way to go

The debt-based monetary system is on life support. The debt saturation point has already been passed. All new money created in the form of debt now lowers productivity.

We just had HP - 27,000
USPS, And many others. What do you think is the next step?

More Layoffs? or a Slow down?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7768903

IMO, both....

Its a trickle down effect.....

All people that lost jobs affect other peoples jobs due to money turnover....

Therefore, 1 job lost might be equivalent to 2 or 3 eventual job layoffs, and the cycle continues....

There is a way to stop it....

Keep jobs here in the USA....

High tariffs for import goods...(Levels the playing field)

Low taxes on businesses that create jobs here in USA...
Higher taxes on automation that take away peoples jobs....

smaller Government (Federal and State)....
Get rid of NAFTA...

Bring back the mom-n-pop shops and the local stores....

How would the small shops compete with the conglomerates...(Level the playing field)
