Quoting: N3m3s1s I'd lean toward the first which is incidentally why it'll be struck down by the court. It's a substantive due process violation. The taking away of the passport has no logical connection to serving the government's interest in collecting taxes (leaving aside the morality or utility of the tax policies themselves). It's simply an unrelated threat, which is not allowed under the modern understanding of the 5th amendment. I.e., if the government wants to get the states to provide bilingual education, it can't threaten to take away all medicare payments if they don't. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 6747118 United States 04/05/2012 09:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is disconcerting for me - and i've already sent mail via snail mail and emails to my "representatives". I make a good salary. I got divorced a couple of years ago, and was left to financially clean up alot of the devastation with the divorce as she could not. She was in real estate, etc.. and pretty much didn't make shit. We split expenses in the divorce, however she was not able to pay - so to save my name, I paid. As well as paying an enormous sum each month in child support and alimony - not to mention finding a place for me, large enough for my kids when they came (i now pay $850 a month rent). So I had to claim exempt for 2 years - didn't want to, but had to. I could have gotten a second job, but I work around 10 hours a day where I am at. So now after exempt for two years to be the best I can and pay ALL the bills and be able to live myself, I'm 60k in back debt with the IRS. Guess I'm fucked, as I travel all over the world to do business. And yes, I CAN sue my ex for now meeting her obligation, but won't help but take away from my kids - which is the most important to me. |

Bill Would Suspend Passport Rights For Delinquent Taxpayers A bill authored by a Southland lawmaker that could potentially allow the federal government to prevent any Americans who owe back taxes from traveling outside the U.S. is one step closer to becoming law. Senate Bill 1813 was introduced back in November by Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Los Angeles) to “reauthorize Federal-aid highway and highway safety construction programs, and for other purposes” . After clearing the Senate on a 74 – 22 vote on March 14, SB 1813 is now headed for a vote in the House of Representatives, where it’s expected to encounter stiffer opposition among the GOP majority. Not paying your taxes is unethical, utterly selfish and illegal. If you commit a crime, you should not be allowed to flee. It only makes sense to take away your passport. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1560019 I look forward to seeing your kind die out. s. d. butler User ID: 974819 United States 04/05/2012 10:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So let's get this - you don't want to pay taxes to the state, but you want a state issued document that declares you are a citizen of the state and affords you protection as such? Or put another way, you want the privileges without the cost and responsibilitites. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2033927 Make up your mind. Taxes are paid at the point of a gun. I doubt if anyone "wants" a state issued document. Get the "state issued document" or don't travel. What protection and priviliges are you talking about? Because I don't see any. Other than visa waivers for many countries. American embassies offer almost nothing in the way of protection or anything else except for "official people". Your contention that "you want the privileges without the responsibility" is ridiculous. Everything the state does is at the point of a gun. They will kill, imprison or ruin your life if you don't go along with their malum prohibita. Last Edited by s. d. butler on 04/05/2012 10:27 PM |

So, combined with this, non-compliance with Obamacare would cause an individual to lose his right to travel. |

Let me begin by saying anyone with the mindset "not paying your taxes is unethical" needs a reality check. It's the taxes that are unethical, and nearly unchallenged, seeing how the majority belief in my profession is that they're illegal to begin with. Many in my field want to ease the pain as much as possible for the public, however, assuming taxes is your civic duty is an error on your part. Your income tax almost entirely goes to pay the interest issued by the federal reserve to the united states government. It is no coincidence they sprung up at the same time. If the fed didn't exist income tax would be entirely unnecessary and government wouldn't grow out of control because your taxes would actually be necessary to fund it. Currently this is not the case. If the government needs something now it just asks the feds for the money and the people pay it back. If congress issued the currency their only option would be to use what money already exists instead of an open printing press for the government bloat. It's time to wake up to reality. You think your taxes pay for stuff like the military? Shame on you I guess, this is perhaps the biggest illusion in the USA. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8950 People may think this is a good idea, but when taxes are raised on everyone to the point where only the rich can afford to pay them, we are going to see wide swaths fo the population, forced to reamin debt slaves to the state. This bill has nothing to do with taxes and everything to do with command and control of the citizenry by restricitng the freedom of movement. Anyone that thinks otherwise is an ass licking mega douchetard of epic and undeniable proportions. I agree, also note that a lawyer can argue that a passport can't be taken unless there is a conviction. "Only the Rich" will have the power and money to successfully defend themselves against such intrusion or put off conviction with ample time to relocate before passport can be taken. This is also a buffer law creating another degree of separation from those who fight against the legality of the taxes. And if this law is passed will the tax evaders in congress be forced to stay in the country? |
