Ten years ago, Portugal Decriminalized all drugs..
Opponents warned the course that Portugal took would turn the country into a drug abuser's paradise and that usage would soar. 10 years on, how well has the policy worked?

Yea because we know the only way a good decent country like the good ol US can possibly survive economically is by fining the shit out pot smokers and throwing them in jail, where taxes that are supposed to help maintain and upgrade the nation have to instead be used to keep the "treacherous pot smokers" alive, healthy and reasonably comfortable....</sarcasm>

This is interesting in Australia because it looks likely to be debated, decriminalize drug use becasue drug users don't belong in jail, among other things.

Where do drug addicts get the money to buy drugs? They steal...theft alone isn't enough to keep them in jail and off the street, but add a drug charge and they can be put away longer...I've had thousands of dollars in both property and money stolen by drug addicts...If they decriminalize drugs, then at least use public executions for thievery...

cannabis has been decrimnalized in Holland for years.
From my own observations, and visits there, it doesn't seem to have led to mass psychosis

It hasn't turned the country into a drug then, but there area a lot more shootouts in neighborhoods that didn't even have one shooting a year, and there are many sad cases of drug addicts that would break your heart!

They won't need to steal anymore if drugs are as cheap as a can of soda because it is legal to grow and manufacture it.

Imagine paying twenties for a few grams of sugar. That's criminalization and the underground market to you.

They would no longer need to steal thousands of dollars to buy very expensive drugs.

Uh no Captain stereotype, most drug addicts pay for their drugs with money they make from working.

If you think the majority of drug addicts are unemployed you are gravely mistaken.

America is a nation of drug addicts.

there are consequences the supporters aren't considering

testing for drugs/alcohol as far as employment would remain in place

because they do influence thought and action, mostly away from optimum response towards outright recklessness

so you have legal drug users, still under or unemployed

the end result(s) remain pretty much the same

civil litigation could very well increase for liability cases where "legal" users injure another party

it's Pandora's box no matter how you look at it
