This is interesting in Australia because it looks likely to be debated, decriminalize drug use becasue drug users don't belong in jail, among other things.

I'm all for legalizing weed but let's not look at Portugal for a model.

Where do drug addicts get the money to buy drugs? They steal...theft alone isn't enough to keep them in jail and off the street, but add a drug charge and they can be put away longer...I've had thousands of dollars in both property and money stolen by drug addicts...If they decriminalize drugs, then at least use public executions for thievery...

there are consequences the supporters aren't considering

testing for drugs/alcohol as far as employment would remain in place

because they do influence thought and action, mostly away from optimum response towards outright recklessness

so you have legal drug users, still under or unemployed

the end result(s) remain pretty much the same

civil litigation could very well increase for liability cases where "legal" users injure another party
