people that would be snitching are probably the uneducated type looking for a quick buck. I highly doubt they know the difference between a legal gun and an illegal one. Calls and investigation will be numerous to say the least. A large portion of these will be people hoping to get the $200 bounty by snitching on someone with a red Ryder air gun. Harrisburg already has enough money problems. Wait till the cops have to visit every complaint when there is no real violation. It's only gonna get worse from here on out. But I guess Linda can always fire a couple fireman or paramedics in order to pay for these gun searches.

Yes, but how is a person to know whether or not a gun is truly illegal if they themselves are not the owner? Obviously this is to apply to gangbangers and whatever else, but I'm just wondering how...when they receive a tip, they handle it.

Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson is offering Harrisburg residents $50 to $200 for calling tips to an illegal guns hotline.


“This way we’re getting illegal guns off the street,” police Chief Pierre Ritter said at a press conference this morning. “Maybe this will bring some of our crime down.”

A tip that leads to the recovery of an illegal gun earns $50. One that also leads to an arrest is worth $100 and one that helps police recover multiple guns and arrest multiple people will yield $200, Thompson said.

Mayor Linda Thompson and Police Chief Pierre Ritter said unlike previous buyback programs where people were paid for turning in junk guns, the "Gun Stoppers" program will give rewards for illegal weapons and the people who have them.

"Even turning in a family member," Thompson said while announcing the program Thursday. "I've said over and over again that moms and aunts, you know your kids, you know your nephews, you know your sons, and you know whether they're carrying an illegal gun, and I'm asking you to do the right thing."

The program will award $50 for tips that lead to the recovery of an illegal firearm, handgun, automatic select-fire rifle, or sawed-off shotgun. If the tip results in an arrest, the reward is $100. If several guns are recovered and multiple arrests are made, the city will pay $200 to the tipster.

"This way, we're getting functional illegal guns off the street," Ritter said.

For Gun Stoppers to work, of course, citizens must turn in their neighbors or family members.

Simple ID check to see if they are a convict...or outstanding warrants...including deadbeat dads...I'm really having a problem seeing a down side to this.

Nah, I've had idiots call on me...just after they threaten me and see I have a pistol...nothing happens except they are warned by the police to never step foot on or near my property ever again.

I guess I'm trying to find the whole way to prove that a person, even a previously convicted felon or whatever, has the illegal gun unless they search the residence??? Just a tip from another dirtbag who wants the money for their next fix doesn't really help.
