how do I stop my cat 'sucking' on my clothing????
I adopted a cat a few months ago & she 'sucks' on my clothes at every opportunity she gets!

I love her dearly but this is getting ridiculous. She comes & jumps on my lap & then she 'claws' my clothes as she is sucking as though she thinks I am her mum.

she is approx 12 months old

No the last time she got out the dog wouldn't let her out from under the house & my son had to go 'save' her. Maybe it's time to let her find her feet, although they seem to dislike one another :)thank you!

Rub raw garlic into all your clothes. It will keep the cats away, along with any other undesireables. And vampires.

poor baby, cats and dogs do this when they were separated from their mom and siblings too early.

the only thing you can do is give her a piece of clothes with your smell to sleep on, this is a sign of stress when they reproduce too many baby's habits especially the sucking stuff.

you can adopt another cat it helps, she will change for the good, of course the other one must be balanced tounge

She looks like a very nice cat. Suckling and kneeding are a response to either being taken from her mom too young, or just insecurity. It will pass when she feels completely comfortable (which could take a while..). Just hold her and pet her and let her get it out. She'll be just fine.

Lemon Pepper, cats hate the smell of it. But the cat will grow to hate you as scent is a powerful bond for cats.

She has claimed my ironing board as her 'bed' & she 'hates other animals & will hiss at the dog through the closed door. I do let her suckle most of the time unless I am dressed up ready to go out.

She is still quite young but has already had a litter when she was previously 'owned', poor baby.

As I said I let her nearly all of the time unless I have to go out (because she leaves nice big wet patches) She is a real sweetie I'd just like to know how to stop it without hurting her feelings so to speak.

lol cute tounge

she already had kittens?

could be part of her problem, they took away her babies around witch age do you know this?

this could have been some kind of trauma, too young and she didn't understand why they took her babies = stress and regression.

Yes when I adopted her she was already desexed & I was told she had already had a litter (she does have the signs of this :(). I don't know how long ago as she was a rescue kiity. She really doesn't take to my boys but races out as soon as she knows I'm awake to jump up on me & kneads me & suckles. She is a real sweet girl & seems to think I am her surrogate mum lol.

Re: how do I stop my cat 'sucking' on my clothing????
A cat I adopted from a feline foster home did the same exact thing. He would ninja attack me out of no where, dig his claws into me, and just start sucking on my shirt. It bothered me until I learned that cats do that when they are taken from their moms too young (as others mentioned above). This cat was rescued off the street, and had also been hit by a car, and had bounced around some homes - so yeah, he was insecure.

He was 2 when I adopted him, and he never did stop doing that. He just needed lots of love and reassurance :)

Get her a soft stuffed animal and when she starts to suckle, let her suckle on that. I have a cat that does that same thing. She is 3 years old now and will still suckle on the stuffed animal sometimes.

Re: how do I stop my cat 'sucking' on my clothing????
You can try simply moving her. When she starts to suck on your clothes, pick her up and set her next to you or on the floor. Perhaps just a soft but stern "no" at the same time.

A few times and she'll make the connection that sucking your clothes, means no more snuggle time.

They say cats have the intelligence of a 1 1/2 to 2 yr old human. (I say some are smarter than adult humans) But basically, anything you'd expect a toddler to understand, you can expect the cat to understand.

Don't get caught up in feeling bad because of her history. Show her you love her and make her feel secure - but correct her incorrect behaviors...consistantly. You'll both be happy that way.

My parents have a rescue dog that sucks on people's thumbs and tries to nurse. In her case she was weaned too early [taken from her mom at a few weeks old] and then bottle-fed. She's three years old now.

We don't know how to stop her but it is adorable.
