Spent Fuel Pools as a Bright Spot in Fukushima’s Crisis
“Before you can take it out of the pool, it has to be at least five years old, and by that time, we call it, for lack of a better word, cold fuel,’’ Mr. Miller said.

At the briefing on Tuesday, Mr. Fertel mentioned other recommendations from the task force, including better instruments for altering operators to how much water is in the pools and new ways of adding water in an emergency. Pulling more fuel out, he said, would provide certain advantages but is also certain to expose workers to radiation in the course of the transfer.

Fukushima used dry casks as well, and those appear to have survived without damage, Mr. Fertel said, although they have not been thoroughly inspected. “They’re fine, but so are the pools,’’ he said.

They were not unscathed, however; debris flew into the pools after the buildings surrounding them blew up in hydrogen explosions.

Re: “It is no exaggeration to say that the fate of Japan and the whole world depends on No. 4 reactor” — Appeals for independent assessment team
But it is not the Reactor in 4 but the SFP that is the Problem.

Loaded with Active MOX.

Good Post OP..keep em' reminded.
 Quoting: Spittin'Cesium

OK.. good. I saw the thread title and was irked at how misleading it was.

I'm glad you cleared that up as Unit 4 was, in fact, not loaded with fuel at the time of the tsunami but the Spent Fuel Pool is basically at capacity.

Good lookin out!
 Quoting: Roentgen®

MOX fuel was in 3. Reactor 4 was emptied of fuel before the eq. The fuel in SFP 4 is hot, hot, hot because it was loaded directly into the SFP which is over-loaded. Common practice to overload SFPs at NPPs all over the world because of lack of disposition and length of time it needs to cool before being transferred into dry cask storage. Minimum of 5 years and up to 10 before it can be transfered. Also common to install additional racks in SFPs to handle much more than the designed fuel capacities.

Not exactly common knowledge and you won't hear about it on MSM or from any nuke orgs.

The Mark I was not designed for MOX fuel to begin with.

I have found it rather strange that there has not been a worldwide panel of experts tapped for this issue. Makes you wonder who knows what and why that information is not being shared.
 Quoting: Southern OR

So you think that all the scientists in the world are being forced to NOT look into this?

cool2
 Quoting: mikebo2

It was probably mostly due to TEPCO in collusion with the Japanese government doing all they could to downplay the situation..Playing stupid face saving games with a situation that is beyond anything people have had to even contemplate trying to deal with.
 Quoting: Khalen

The industry know exactly what is going on and has since the beginning. There is a lot more to it. Think .gov policy and the fact that there are new reactors being commissioned for the first time in many, many years.

i'm thinking the whole mox and new reactor strategy is a form of "medium term" storage solution (as they don't build nuclear weapons any more)...... we'll just put it all in a giant cement mixer and pour it all back in regardless of how toxic it is......

oohooo... hhooo.. hoo tepco boy.. now i get to have some fun

6000+ missing fuel cells? where are they?

why the JP government to commit to a nice 'blue wall' around an 80 km exclusion zone?

why now are the US coming in with assessment and decontamination set of teams?

you know why?... everyone with a computer and a brain looked this stuff up and got frightened..... the rest of everyone watched the 6 o'clock news and saw dancers... and you all still ate shitake mushrooms.....

you truly are still deluded and spread misinformation.... buy hey.. i am still here to call you and your so called think tank 'pack of liars'

keep going shill boy.....

bump

funny thing is, the truth still comes in, and it will be reported.. the more you try and derail, by posting insults to others, only points out your own lack of knowledge, research, and true agenda... you are reverse engineering your own ideology, agenda and payments from tepco, which further points out that you should be moved very far away from any nuke plant.....

You don't seem to have much confidence in your own assessment abilities.

Therefore, I must have been correct to have doubted your opinion in the past.

Interesting song by a black metal band named Craft, no conspiracy here, just kind of haunting and fits very well with what's going on....... Song is titled 'Reaktor 4' btw which was released in 2002

Burn our earth to waste, scourge.
Monstrous nuclear waste.
Cancerous diseases and nuclear bliss.
Mother Nature's creatures entwined and sick.
Oh, you darkened waste.

Make our earth unhealthy.
Scourge the soil of God.
Your radiation of immense power.
The wind will pass it.
