American Students: PATHETIC
The dumbing down of America continues unabated:

Manufacturers struggle to preserve 'shop math' skills

[link to www.sanluisobispo.com]

[snip]

Harold's fork truck is rated for 4,000 pounds. He has to move and stack 10 skids (pallets) of paper, each weighing 1,500 pounds. What is the maximum number of skids he can lift at one time?

If someone wants a job at Case Paper Co., that person had better know how to calculate the answer. Even more basic: Can the person use a tape measure?

"You'd be amazed at how many people can't read a ruler to one-sixteenth of an inch," said Lee Cohn of Case Paper. Case converts huge paper rolls into cardboard boxes, pharmaceutical packaging, even lottery tickets.

to the twin 1-star bandits:

Why Can't American Students Compete?

[link to www.thedailybeast.com]

"So maybe it is more than a mere coincidence that 32 percent of U.S. public and private-school students in the class of 2011 are deemed proficient in mathematics, placing the United States 32nd among the 65 nations that participated in the latest international tests administered by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The United States ranks between Portugal and Italy and far behind South Korea, Finland, Canada, and the Netherlands, to say nothing of the city of Shanghai, with its 75 percent proficiency rate."

My lazy American students

[link to www.boston.com]

[snip]

By the time students are in college, habits can be tough to change. If you’re used to playing video games like “Modern Warfare’’ or “Halo’’ all night, how do you fit in four hours of homework? Or rest up for class?

Teaching in college, especially one with a large international student population, has given me a stark - and unwelcome - illustration of how Americans’ work ethic often pales in comparison with their peers from overseas.

My C, D, and F students this semester are almost exclusively American, while my students from India, China, and Latin America have - despite language barriers - generally written solid papers, excelled on exams, and become valuable class participants.

One girl from Shanghai became a fixture at office hours, embraced our college writing center, and incessantly e-mailed me questions about her evolving papers. Her English is still mediocre: she frequently puts “the’’ everywhere (as in “the leader supported the feminism and the environmentalism’’) and confuses “his’’ and “her.’’ But that didn’t stop her from doing rewrite after rewrite, tirelessly trying to improve both structure and grammar.

Poor U.S. Test Results Tied To Weak Curriculum

[snip]

In short, the tests showed U.S. fourth-graders performing poorly, middle school students worse. and high school students are unable to compete. By the same criteria used to say we were "average" in elementary school, "we appear to be "near the bottom" at the high school level. People have a tendency to think this picture is bleak but it doesn't apply to their own school. Chances are, even if your school compares well in SAT scores, it will still be a lightweight on an international scale.

1. By the time our students are ready to leave high school - ready to enter higher education and the labor force - they are doing so badly with science they are significantly weaker than their peers in other countries.

2. Our idea of "advanced" is clearly below international standards.

3. There appears to be a consistent weakness in our teaching performance in physical sciences that becomes magnified over the years.

I am 20 (birthday was yesterday :D) and most kids my age that go to college act like they are better than everyone else, and they pretend to know everything about everything. They are almost always atheist, and proud of themselves.

(In reality, they get drunk and party and don't care about anything but themselves. They are not smart, and they do not understand love)

The lie being perpetuated from a young age that "if you go to college you will be happy for your whole life" is one of the literally thousands of things wrong with the public and private education (indoctrination) system.

Re: American Students: PATHETIC
in some countries , students go to school 6 days a week plus taking other private classes on their own ( usually english, french , japanese or chinese ) here in US they spend more time trying to be accepted in sport team...and some don't even show up in class for 5 days a week...
a co-worker has a daughter who works as a teacher, she took away a cellphone from a student for no respect (calling in class ) the student borrowed a cellphone from another , went to bathroom to call his mother who showed right away and demanded the phone back from the teacher and proceeded to hand it back to the kid...
so don't expect much from the next generation, they will be lucky if they know how to wipe themselves clean each day...

Humans are not dumb.

So if you see a mass of people whose intelligence is on the lower levels, this is a serious cause of alarm.
Its the same as seeing a majore disaster in the making.
This is the result of decades of mind control, and toxicity in the health of humans.

Please wake up.
The potential of each human brain is enormous.
So seeing so many numbers being dumbed down is a red light flashing loud.

A local school district proudly announces that they have a 5th year program with a local community college. Basically, this a 5th year of high school that is operated by the community college, so that upon graduation, the students will be ready to attend community college.

They are also the most politically correct district in the area. The children have all seen Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth 5 times, and are made to watch an write papers on The Story of Stuff, but many don't know the basic facts.

I really hate it when high school students can answer the simplest things. Like, who the first president was? Which country is to the North or South of the US? Or, what is 6 X 7? (Without a calculator, they are lost.)

I'm 28 years old, graduated high school with a 3.6 and college with a 3.1 and rarely ever had to apply myself much. Looking back on it I sure wish I would have taken advantage of that time better and worked harder. However in regards to this post, it seemed to me, especially in high school, that it was just too easy. Teachers would constantly give students second and third chances to re-do work that they failed miserably at. They would give out study guides that were exactly like the test. We would have open book tests. At the time it seemed cool because it made school easier, but now I realize, I didn't learn half as much as I should have. The system is definitely broken.

i hear you on that...i wish the system wasn't so easy for the "smarter" kids...i never had to push myself either and still cruised with 4.42 in high school (honors and AP classes had weighted GPA) and 3.86 in college...all the while i was going to raves, partying, and generally being a bad member of society. what a crock this system is!
