Some 13,000 meters of beaches in Los Frailes, a town in Baja California Sur, Mexico, disappeared for a number of microearthquakes and aftershocks, a phenomenon called "cascade of sand into the sea", which poses serious risks to bathers warned Wednesday the Secretariat of the Environment.

The head of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada, confirmed that the sea "stole" 1.3 hectares to the beach.

Elvira Quesada came to the area in the southern portion of Cabo Pulmo National Park (PNCP), a protected area, where last weekend was found the phenomenon.

"The number of microearthquakes and aftershocks shake the whole platform of sand in the beach where the sand will eventually disappear and generated a phenomenon they call it there, marine waterfall, a cascade of sand into the sea," the official said.

He warned that "serious" is not only the disappearance of the beach, "but upon entering the sea on the beach walking five steps presents a cliff over 140 meters deep," he warned.
