Spring and lawn mowers in the burbs..it's crazy, mad noise pollution!
Hope I am not being a spring grouch. Spring has sprung and neighbors are mowing their lawns every other day! I kid you not. Even at these high gas prices!
It is impossible to hear the chirping of the birds, the rustle of the wind and leaves, the laughter of children playing outside, or to just sit quietly and read, meditate, or take a walk, whatever. All you can hear is one lawn mower after next. And as soon as the grass grows a tiny bit it starts all over, again. It is like a war against nature.

I have a theory on this: People have much to take care of in the inside (their homes and their affairs and inside their minds) but don't want to, so this is an easy escape and gives an outward impression to their neighbors that all is well.

Leave the grass alone people, save gas, just do it when necessary and attend to your other junk: mend relationships, learn that language or software you meant to, apply for that job you are interested in, clean your closets, clean your garage, make a plan for finances, weight loss...whatever. It will pay off much more than the grass clippings you scattered around. Hope I am not being a spring grouch.

Why in HELL do you live in the burbs if you don't like burb life?

It seems either a small desert island by yourself OR at the top of a high rise where other peoples freedoms won't bother you.

I guess the point is GET OVER YOURSELF!

Sorry to hear that there is a human cost. too.
But some seem to be thinking that wanting to hear the beauty and silence of nature is not in the realm of freedoms and no matter what the cost grass must be kept as low as possible. An that defines their freedom.

Re: Spring and lawn mowers in the burbs..it's crazy, mad noise pollution!
I agree. My neighborhood is a madhouse. Lawnmowers or leaf blowers, or aerators, or car vacs. Then somebody has a crew in to take up their sidewalk, or put on a new roof, or the trash trucks are making their rounds (three days a week because everyone uses a different company).

Not to mention that that every truck and suv in the neighborhood has that throaty exhaust system that sounds like a semi, and all the small cars have exhausts that sound like lawnmowers with megaphones. I think they're missing the point of the purpose of a muffler.

Then there are the dogs. Bark and bark and bark. The worst one is my roommates and dwells ten paces from my ear. A hulking 120 pound Great Pyrenees that is literally the worst thing in my life. Not just now, but ever. Thank god his other two dogs only bark half as much.

The cherry on top? The wretched high-pitched screaming of the wonderful neighborhood kids. Absolutely maddening. They could be getting brutally raped, tortured, and kidnapped and no one could tell the difference from their regular playing screams. I don't even check anymore.

Freedom is doing what I want when I want and as many times as I want AND no I don't cut my lawn because I don't have any. What isn't garden or fruit trees is pine needles, I moved out of the city almost 50 years ago.

Another question is how do you know they cut the lawn during the week? Shouldn't you be at work or in school?

My neighbor mowed his lawn last Thursday at night,in the dark drunk. It annoyed me but what surprised me was Friday morning when I went out to get the paper I looked at his lawn and he'd done a pretty fair job on it.

There are people who post extreme comments like yours just to get a response. Well, here's yours: If we all defined freedom that way we would have anarchy. Just because we are free to do something doesn't mean we should do it.

save money on gas; don't grow a lawn.
save money on groceries; grow a garden.
save money on therapy; take up gardening.
save your health; eat your own organic food.

I remember my grandma had the old fashion kind that you just hand pushed and it cut the grass just fine... no noise... someone should just start making those again and selling them...

5a whatever peace

Nobody mows their lawns ever around where I live in a bit up from bayshore blvd in Tampa, or very very very rarely... the grass here really does not grow past a certain point... lots of sandy ground... atleast in my little neighborhood here...

I am sick of summer noises too! Kids playing basketball constantly next door, the lawn mowing, motorcycles, plus the non-stop air traffic lately. I kind of can't wait for winter again. I am saving to move to the country and that day can't come soon enough!

Dog owners are the worst. Fucking yap yap yap little shits that you just want to kick 120 yards (GOOOAAAAL!!)

But lawns.. fucking pointless. Grow some food or do something with it. A square patch of grass is just stupid, it doesn't do anything, requires regular work to stop it doing what it wants to do on it's own.

Grass should be a filler material for landscaping, not the main event. Unless you're doing a golfcourse, in which case you're a faggot and should be shot.

Re: Spring and lawn mowers in the burbs..it's crazy, mad noise pollution!
I am so sick of all this fucking noise that people are making with their lawnmowers and leafblowers! It drives me mad and affects my health! People have nothing better to do with their fucking time than to blow leaves and cut grass! Let the fucking grass grow, you losers! Get a life! I think mental capacity and leaf blowing/lawn mowing are inversely proportional. It seems like it's the stupid, fat people who spend all their free time mowing lawns. They think they're exercising and they don't give a shit about how all that fucking noise they're creating impacts the health of their neighbors. Why are there no laws against using gas mowers and leaf blowers or ANY loud lawn equipment or power tools! I want to hear the birds and the wind and the leaves. Who gives a shit of the grass is long and the leaves are on the ground. It was like that before leaf blowers and lawnmowers were invented and people seemed to manage just fine without them! I hate people! They're so selfish and fucking neurotic. Hey moron! Yes, you, the guy who barely made it through college with his political science major, get you're fat, dysfunctional ass off that lawnmower, remove your paw from that leaf-blower switch, and get some real exercise, you piece of shit! You're doing nothing but making people miserable with all that noise you're making. Fuck you, bastard. You too, you stupid mercenary wetbacks. Go back to Mexico and get a real job! I hope all you people go deaf by your forty-fifth birthday from all that noise you're generatiing. Better yet, maybe your hands will accidentally be cut off by a lawnmower blade and you'll have to find other work - quiet, peacefull work, that won't involve deranging decent, nature-loving, quiet people!

I apologize for being mean in my post above, but I am so frustrated by all this noise and that nothing is done to stop it. There should be laws against noisy lawn equipment! It's not right! There have been many studies showing that constant exposure to loud noise adversely affects health and yet people tolerate it! They'd rather have cancer, heart attacks, and hypertension than demand a ban on loud leaf blowers and lawn mowers.
