Spring and lawn mowers in the burbs..it's crazy, mad noise pollution!
Hope I am not being a spring grouch. Spring has sprung and neighbors are mowing their lawns every other day! I kid you not. Even at these high gas prices!
It is impossible to hear the chirping of the birds, the rustle of the wind and leaves, the laughter of children playing outside, or to just sit quietly and read, meditate, or take a walk, whatever. All you can hear is one lawn mower after next. And as soon as the grass grows a tiny bit it starts all over, again. It is like a war against nature.

I have a theory on this: People have much to take care of in the inside (their homes and their affairs and inside their minds) but don't want to, so this is an easy escape and gives an outward impression to their neighbors that all is well.

Leave the grass alone people, save gas, just do it when necessary and attend to your other junk: mend relationships, learn that language or software you meant to, apply for that job you are interested in, clean your closets, clean your garage, make a plan for finances, weight loss...whatever. It will pay off much more than the grass clippings you scattered around. Hope I am not being a spring grouch.

Why in HELL do you live in the burbs if you don't like burb life?

It seems either a small desert island by yourself OR at the top of a high rise where other peoples freedoms won't bother you.

I guess the point is GET OVER YOURSELF!

mowing lawns as a kid ruined my hearing. Back then they didn't recommend wearing ear protection.

Sorry to hear that there is a human cost. too.
But some seem to be thinking that wanting to hear the beauty and silence of nature is not in the realm of freedoms and no matter what the cost grass must be kept as low as possible. An that defines their freedom.

Re: Spring and lawn mowers in the burbs..it's crazy, mad noise pollution!
I agree. My neighborhood is a madhouse. Lawnmowers or leaf blowers, or aerators, or car vacs. Then somebody has a crew in to take up their sidewalk, or put on a new roof, or the trash trucks are making their rounds (three days a week because everyone uses a different company).

Not to mention that that every truck and suv in the neighborhood has that throaty exhaust system that sounds like a semi, and all the small cars have exhausts that sound like lawnmowers with megaphones. I think they're missing the point of the purpose of a muffler.

Then there are the dogs. Bark and bark and bark. The worst one is my roommates and dwells ten paces from my ear. A hulking 120 pound Great Pyrenees that is literally the worst thing in my life. Not just now, but ever. Thank god his other two dogs only bark half as much.

The cherry on top? The wretched high-pitched screaming of the wonderful neighborhood kids. Absolutely maddening. They could be getting brutally raped, tortured, and kidnapped and no one could tell the difference from their regular playing screams. I don't even check anymore.

Freedom is doing what I want when I want and as many times as I want AND no I don't cut my lawn because I don't have any. What isn't garden or fruit trees is pine needles, I moved out of the city almost 50 years ago.

Another question is how do you know they cut the lawn during the week? Shouldn't you be at work or in school?

The crazy nutballs in my burbs mow everyday on ride on mowers. I have come to the conclusion that they only want to get away from the nutbag wife and drink a beer, but thats only my opinion.....

My neighbor mowed his lawn last Thursday at night,in the dark drunk. It annoyed me but what surprised me was Friday morning when I went out to get the paper I looked at his lawn and he'd done a pretty fair job on it.

Many times it is cut in the evening so I am either back from school or work and desperately needing some quiet time. It appears I am not alone in feeling this way. ;)

There are people who post extreme comments like yours just to get a response. Well, here's yours: If we all defined freedom that way we would have anarchy. Just because we are free to do something doesn't mean we should do it.

save money on gas; don't grow a lawn.
save money on groceries; grow a garden.
save money on therapy; take up gardening.
save your health; eat your own organic food.

I remember my grandma had the old fashion kind that you just hand pushed and it cut the grass just fine... no noise... someone should just start making those again and selling them...

5a whatever peace

Nobody mows their lawns ever around where I live in a bit up from bayshore blvd in Tampa, or very very very rarely... the grass here really does not grow past a certain point... lots of sandy ground... atleast in my little neighborhood here...
