University of Pittsburg installs security check points. Restricts access to campus buildings. Bans backpacks from entering buildings!
So what do you all think is the motivation behind the events at the University of Pittsburgh, and what it's led up to with the recent email sent to students and faculty?

Here's a couple of recent articles about the bomb threats and shooting.

"PITTSBURGH - Campus police, federal authorities, and experts are stumped by more than 20 bomb threats since mid-February that have prompted building evacuations on the University of Pittsburgh campus, caused some professors to move classes or offer them online, and led some students to stay off-campus.

Although the threats received more attention after a gunman fatally shot one person and wounded several others before he was shot dead by campus police at a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center psychiatric hospital on March 8, the string of threats actually began on Feb. 13."

"The chancellor's statement came as a new wave of threats and evacuations hit five campus buildings Friday, and hours after the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania said the string of threats is now being "vigorously, aggressively and thoroughly" investigated using all available means, including the region's Joint Terrorism Task Force."

And now this email has been sent out to all staff and students.

It reads:

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students:

Let us begin by saying that we appreciate the grace and patience that each of you has shown throughout these very challenging times. We are a great University because we have dedicated and loyal members who are working together in amazing ways.

As we begin to experience escalated evacuations, we have decided to take next steps to heighten security measures on our campus. Beginning tomorrow, the University will limit access to buildings once they have been swept and cleared. Not all buildings will have limited access immediately, but over the next few days we expect this will extend to all buildings.

To enter secured buildings, we all will need to present a University of Pittsburgh ID card. It is important to understand that book bags, backpacks and packages will not be allowed. There will be single entrances to buildings so there will be longer waiting times to get into the buildings. In addition, non-University of Pittsburgh residents will not be allowed in the residence halls.

Please make sure you arrive to your building earlier than your usual arrival time to accommodate this necessary security step. We will continue to evacuate and sweep buildings when threats are received but these additional security measures will reduce the amount of time needed to clear and reopen the buildings.

We have made it through many complicated situations before. Thank you for your patience and dedication and know that we will get through this one together.

Is this just the first of many? It seems like you can go back to VA Tech and watch the progression. They started off with the shootings and have now taken the individual suspects out of the hunt. Now it's anonymous bomb threats. Locking down University's? What's next?

All students, faculty and employees probably gonna have to get RFID chipped.

Pittsburgh is where the robber baron carnegies, mellons and others made their fortunes off the backs of the slave class.

What better place to kick off the mandatory RFID chip program?

The populace is already well versed in being shit on...

Interesting theory. I found this article interesting as well.

"An e-mail sent to a Post-Gazette reporter was from an anonymous person with indications that the e-mail chain passed through Austria, but e-mail remailers launder the chain so much it’s hard to know where it really came from.

“The way these remailers work is imagine a package that has a destination ‘to’ address and a ‘from’ address and imagine that it gets sent through multiple stages where each stage they take off the ‘from’ address and add a new ‘from’ address and just keep sending that,” Carnegie Mellon University Professor Michael Smith said."

The article does go on to say this:

"Can you learn anything about the sender’s use of a hard to trace e-mail? Does that mean the sender is very sophisticated with regard to computers?

“No. In fact you need a moderate amount of computer sophistication, but you don’t need a whole lot of computer sophistication to pull this off,” Smith said. “You need to know a little bit about what you’re doing, but this is not necessarily a really sophisticated hacker.”

Is it me? Did I consume too many peeps today?
Is this old news?
Is this not doom-elicious enough to be worthy of some replies?

I'm basically reading that a near martial law situation is being test ran at the University of Pittsburg. They have received over 40+ bomb threats since Feb 13th. They are receiving most of the threats via email now, that at this point can't be traced. ..So they say.. The early threats were found written on a bathroom stalls in various mens restrooms..

So at very least we know that individual, or at least one of the individuals involved have been to the campus. This is just being "phoned in".

Nothing has been found at any time during the many threats. A full sweep of the buildings and dorms is conducted each time.

quote from one of the links above:

---The chancellor's statement came as a new wave of threats and evacuations hit five campus buildings Friday, and hours after the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania said the string of threats is now being "vigorously, aggressively and thoroughly" investigated using all available means, including the region's Joint Terrorism Task Force.....

...Agencies on the terrorism task force include the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Internal Revenue Service, U.S. Secret Service, Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Federal Air Marshals, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the FBI, along with local agencies, including Pittsburgh police and Pitt police.---

Students are now having to go through checkpoints in order to gain access to the buildings where classes are held. They are recommending that the students arrive early because of long waiting times to get through the checkpoints... just like at the airport security check points where the TSA gets to grab your junk..
They are not permitting students to carry backpacks in to the buildings. Ok, now it went from insane to bat shit crazy. What do they expect students to put their books and laptops and notebooks etc etc, in to?? Some classes are being cancelled, rescheduled or moved online.

Even their dorms are now under attack. They being woken up at at 2AM and pulled out of their beds and evacuated because of bomb threats.

This has to have a tipping point one way or 3 or 4 other ways..
-Do they at some point say screw these fake calls and just stop evacuating and sweeping each time?
-What happens if they do that and one of the calls is not a fake, and people die?
-Do they use this an the excuse to censor the internet because the emailed threats in this case are untraceable according to this: from one of the links above:

Police and experts say the sender is using an online "retailer" that relays e-mails through several intermediaries so the origin of the message cannot be traced.

"It would be very difficult if not impossible to trace this," said Lorrie Cranor, who oversees Carnegie Mellon University's CyLab Usable Privacy and Security Lab a few blocks from the Pitt campus.

No bombs have been found and nobody has been injured, though some are beginning to question the futility of building evacuations and searches....

....He said most of the emails were being traced to Austria. The emails usually state a building name, and then the word, "kaboom," he said. Each time a threat comes in, the newspaper staff calls the police, who then order an evacuation.

-So could it be said that the Feds are the ones behind the threats?
-Could they be doing this just for practice?
-Are the planting something in the dorms and buildings during the many many sweeps they seem to be doing daily now? What would they be planting? Bombs? Cameras? Some kind of mind control devices? Are they installing software onto the students laptops they leave in their rooms during evacuations? or copying everything off their laptops?
-Seems like it could be a lot of things. Hopefully some more of you will chime in on this/

I'll bump this in the morning when everyone is recovering after overdosing today on chocolate bunnies and deviled eggs...
I think this should be getting a lot more attention. If not in the MSM, at least here..?

Maybe a mod can pin for a bit and lets see if anyone local there can chime in with a personal account of whats going on...?

Another reason to lock down universities:

[link to www.bloomberg.com]

Maybe the old university model is dying out. It's screwed up anyway, it costs way too much for US students to get a college degree.

Pitt is starting to offer their classes online. If I want to learn online there's

ocw.mit.edu

and

en.wikipedia.org

for example, and neither charges any tuition money.

I ran across some interesting information concerning the shooting that took place in Pittsburgh on March 8th 2012. It involved a guy named John Shick. He shot 9 people, killiing 2 of them, at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC (University of Pitsburgh Medical Center)

Here are a few links I found. They all contain various information.

"Pittsburgh hospital shooter was gifted, troubled student"
[link to www.usatoday.com]

"Law enforcement authorities who searched John F. Shick’s North Oakland apartment following his deadly shooting rampage Thursday found 43 medications ranging from psychotropic drugs to pain pills to erectile dysfunction tablets that had been prescribed by about a dozen different doctors, sources close to the probe said."

This link gives his history. It tells you all about him. must read this one at least:

I don't believe this is related to the bomb threats. However it is interesting that it happened in the same place. And even more interesting is this John Shick character.

Do you realize that you just said my mother should be gutted in the street for her political views? Do you realize that these kinds of violence actually do occur in other parts of the world? Do you actually want to bring civil war home to your neighborhood? Cause it sounds like you do.

Say what you will about occupy, at least those guys practice non violence. By comparison you appear have the refined moral compass of a wet turd.

Re: University of Pittsburg installs security check points. Restricts access to campus buildings. Bans backpacks from entering buildings!
So what do you all think is the motivation behind the events at the University of Pittsburg, and what it's led up to with the recent email sent to students and faculty?

RFID technology is insecure. Already US passports with RFID chips have been read and cloned onto another RFID chip. If our tax dollars go to RFID implants to schools it would be a huge huge waste of money. Each chip cost about $1 and all the readers that would be needed is where the true cost would rear it's ugly head (~$250 each) to each doorway.

So any threat could easily clone a student RFID tag. So problem is still not solved with RFID technology.

Yeah, those backpacks are all bad news. Backpacks, from single-parent households, are responsible for the majority of assaults, rapes, murders, and thefts in America.

Damned Backpack-Americans.

No back packs? How are supposed to carry all your gear and books to class? Guess we'll be seeing those basket things people pull behind them, with all your gear in it instead.??
I love physics. It bonds us eternally, it's what makes our computers work, it's what's in my morning cup of coffee, it's the thing that keeps the universe from vanishing due to lack of belief...

Yeah I'm a little baffled at this. Ive been researching this like mad and was/am starting to think I'M loosing it? I have to keep stepping back and questioning myself here. I start wondering if I've turned into a paranoid kook or something? Because you'd think this would be getting more attention?

Let's recap in summary:

-Over 40 bomb threats since March 13th
-A College campus is on total lockdown. Virtual Martial Law has been declared there
- students are prohibited from carrying backpacks or book bags of any kind
- security check points are set up every where
- non-students are now banned from most places
- every government agency in the country has agents there conducting security checks and sweeping dorms and classroom buildings- including the US postal service? ATF, FBI and all the others listed above.

This really seems like a fucked up situation. Hopefully more people that live or go to school there will chime in here and give us an update from the front lines....

Re: University of Pittsburg installs security check points. Restricts access to campus buildings. Bans backpacks from entering buildings!
Listen everybody, I am a Pitt Student. Yes, the University has clamped down on many locations, yes students and professors are upset over this situation. They are upset, not because they are worried but because they are missing classes and with finals so close many haven't had time to finish their work.
The students are annoyed because they are being forced out of their dorms in the middle of the night, they are finding out while driving to the university that a bomb sweeping team is in they're building and they are not allowed to enter.
When you have over 40 threats being called in over the past two weeks it becomes an issue of the threats being an annoyance verse that of it being a real threat.
Even tonight, CMU police contacted the Pitt Police, because a note was left at the Starbucks on Forbes and Craig. Point Park College which is located some 1.5 miles down fifth ave from Pitt had a bomb threat called in.
So what does this tell us? Perhaps it is copycat or it is a person who feels they have the power over the University and the city.
Secondly, the City was recently given an F by the federal government as being prepared to handle a biological terrorist attack. Could this actually be a person who is taking advantage of this?
Third, we have two historic dates coming up next Thursday and Friday. Waco/Oklahoma City-Columbine.
Is this individual waiting to see if and how law enforcement is going to handle this situation before acting on their threats?
I spoke to a fireman today who said the University had every reason to take this threat serious and they needed to implement the search because they believe the threats could become real before the end of the semester. If the individual is actually going to act, they he will act with in the next two weeks, before finals start.
Has anybody heard about 4/11 being a threat day? I haven't but he mentioned that, stating that 4/11 could be a day to stay vigilant.
I don't know if I believe that but he did seem credible.
Copycat or not, real threat or not, this is a real situation and I believe the University is doing the right thing. They could do more by allowing the students to get better information about the situation rather than having to get it from outsiders on message boards.
