When I became aware of the immensity of the problems in fuku and the ineptitude of tepco in the weeks following the tsunami, I advocated an invasion of japan to deal with it, if necessary. As time passed and it became clear that there would be no intervention from the outside industry experts, I began to wonder why. My conclusion is that the experts already knew what I was frantically researching to understand; nothing of any substance can be done.

The geology of the region precludes the chernobyl tactics. Volcanic substrate, high water table, multiple sites.

Although the site is emitting and will continue to emit, most feel that the major radiation contamination will remain localized. I'm not so sure about that. Nuking the place would probably make the matter worse by adding to the contamination and by spreading it further and faster.

Dropping sand or concrete would not quench the corium and the volcanic nature of the geology would merely cause the radiation to be spread underground where it would escape to the environment anyway and be harder to contain at a future time.
Anyway, the corium must be cooled first and the corium is underneath and shielded by the reactor vessel which makes it hard to reach with these methods. Water is not doing much as it will not extinquish fission and the temps turn it to steam before it comes into contact, not that it would do much if it did, anyway. Boron or nitrogen are ineffective. For boron to work the corium must be separated or spread. How will that be accomplished? Nitrogen is not going to cool the corium because it has a shell.

So, we wait..... and watch the tepco dog and pony show.
